The Devourer is a hostile flesh creature added by Sons of Sins. It flies, has 30 health (15 hearts), and hits for 9 damage, so it is one of the sturdier monsters in the mod. It emits the Cell Division aura that buffs nearby creatures, and it heals itself each time it damages an enemy. It can also be tamed and kept as a companion.
Devourers occur naturally only in the Sinful Church structure. They can also be summoned with a spawn egg, and a Devourer under Cell Division splits into two more when it dies.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Devourers have no natural biome spawn entries. They appear through three routes:
- Sinful Church. The Sinful Church structure places Devourers in its template. The structure generates in forest biomes, with a random-spread spacing of 37 chunks and a separation of 12 chunks.
- Spawn egg. The Devourer Spawn Egg (stack size 64) summons a Devourer where it is used.
- Cell Division splitting. When a Devourer dies while it has the Cell Division effect, it spawns two Devourers in its place. The new Devourers are created as summoned mobs and inherit the parent's owner, target and armor.
Behavior
A Devourer flies. It has no gravity and takes no fall damage, so it moves freely over terrain and water. Its movement speed and flying speed are both 0.3, its follow range is 16 blocks, and its knockback resistance is 0.4.
A wild Devourer targets the nearest player in range and pursues it. Its attacks have two parts:
- Melee. A Devourer swings when its target is within about 1.25 blocks. The swing deals 9 damage to the target, applied partway through a short wind-up and recovery cycle of about 16 ticks.
- Ranged. A Devourer fires Null Pr projectiles at its target on an interval of about 20 ticks.
Each time a Devourer damages an entity, it recovers 2 health. A long fight therefore gives it more healing than its base health suggests, and burst damage is more effective than a slow exchange of hits.
A Devourer counts as undead for effects and mods that check the undead entity tag.
Taming
A Devourer can be tamed by feeding it an item with the is_flesh tag. Each feeding has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it. A tamed Devourer:
- follows its owner, starting to move when the owner is about 20 blocks away and stopping about 2 blocks from them;
- defends its owner when the owner is hurt, and attacks whatever the owner was attacking;
- does not attack players;
- heals when fed flesh items while below full health, restoring health equal to the food's nutrition value.
A right-click by the owner toggles the Devourer's sit state. A sitting Devourer loses its target and stops following and attacking. It drops to the ground until the owner right-clicks it again.
Drops
A Devourer always drops one Flesh of Demise when it dies.
The rest of its loot depends on how it dies:
- Cell Division on death. If the Devourer has the Cell Division effect when it dies, it splits into two Devourers (see Spawning) and does not drop a Flesh Carcass, although it still drops its Flesh of Demise.
- Armor worn. If the Devourer is wearing any armor in its feet, legs or chest slot, it drops a Flesh Carcass. The carcass stores each worn piece in its matching slot and holds a Bottle of Blood in its last slot. If the Devourer has a custom name, the carcass takes the same name. The item appears after a pickup delay of 10 ticks.
- No armor and no Cell Division. The Devourer drops only the Flesh of Demise.
Only the armored death yields the Flesh Carcass, so a player who wants the Devourer's equipment must kill it while the equipment is still on.
Devourer
No item drops.
Variants
A Devourer has an organ form, the Devourer Organs entity. It is a separate hostile Monster with 10 health (5 hearts), 3 attack damage and a movement speed of 0.3. It is not tamable, and it stores the organs that a Devourer carries for display. How the organs entity itself spawns has not been traced.
The stats for both entities are shown below.
| Mob | Health | Damage | Armor | Speed | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Devourer | 30.0 | 9.0 | 0.3 | 0.8×0.7 | Hostile | |
| Devourer Organs | 10.0 | 3.0 | 0.3 | 0.6×1.8 | Hostile |
Tips
- Keep a Devourer at range where you can. Its flight and ranged fire make it hard to escape once it has closed in, so fight it in open ground where you can see it coming and avoid being cornered.
- Kill it in one burst where possible. Its 2 health per hit adds up in a long fight.
- Clear the area before finishing it. If it dies under Cell Division, it leaves two Devourers behind.
- Kill it with its armor still on if you want the Flesh Carcass. A bare Devourer leaves only the Flesh of Demise.
- Tame one for a companion. Each flesh item has a 1 in 3 chance to tame it, and a tamed Devourer heals from the same food. Stand a sitting Devourer back up before traveling, since a sitting one will not follow.
