The Curse is a hostile flying mob added by Sons of Sins. It has 350 health (175 hearts) and does not despawn, so a Curse stays in the world until it is killed. Its melee hits are weak, but each hit it lands removes an armor piece from the victim, and its aura applies Insanity to nearby players, which distorts their camera and fog.
The Curse is tagged is_a_sin and counts as undead for mods and effects that check the undead tag. It gives no experience when killed.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
The Curse does not spawn naturally. No biome modifier, spawn placement or structure template places it, so it cannot appear in the open world on its own. A Curse enters the world in one of two ways:
- Spawn egg. The Curse Spawn Egg (
Curse Spawn Egg) spawns one Curse when used. The egg stacks to 64. - Ether Ghost transformation. An Ether Ghost of visual variant 2 turns into a Curse when its flesh progression reaches 1500. The server then broadcasts a sin summon message to all players, naming the dimension, the ghost is discarded, and a single Curse is spawned at its position. Ether Ghosts are created when a player dies in a blood pool, so the Curse is reached through blood deaths rather than through exploration.
Behavior
Movement and targeting
The Curse is a flying monster. It is not affected by gravity, is not pushed by other entities and takes no fall damage. It ignores drowning and dragon's breath damage. Its movement speed and flying speed are both 0.3, and its follow range is 64 blocks.
When it has a target, it flies toward the target's eye position at speed 0.6. Once it is within about 5.7 blocks of the target, it keeps updating its destination to the target's eyes, and when its hitbox overlaps the target it attacks. When it has no target, it wanders randomly within 16 blocks of its position at speed 0.6. Its default target is the nearest player. It also targets any entity that hurts it.
Attacks
- Melee. Each hit deals 4 damage (2 hearts) before armor.
- Armor stripping. Each time the Curse damages a player or mob, one of the four armor slots is chosen at random. If that slot holds a piece of armor, the piece is removed and dropped on the ground where the victim stands. An empty slot is unaffected.
- Pull. Whenever the Curse is hurt, there is a 25% chance that the attacker is pulled toward it. The same 25% chance applies when a player walks into it. The pull sets the target's velocity to half the offset toward the Curse.
Insanity aura
Every tick the Curse applies Insanity for 60 ticks (3 seconds) at level I to each player within 8 blocks that does not already have the effect. It also applies Insanity to its current target. A player who leaves the 8-block radius keeps the effect for at most 3 seconds.
While the Curse is not moving horizontally, it turns to face its current target, which it finds within a 32-block scan. While it has a target, each tick it also adds a small push along its look direction (0.05 horizontally and 0.025 vertically).
Drops
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Ether Ashes | x3.0-8.0 | |
Cursed Head | x1.0-1.0 |
Both drops are guaranteed, and the loot table has no looting modifier, so enchanting a weapon does not increase the drops. The Ether Ashes are the Curse's main material drop. The Cursed Head is a single-stack item that removes armor from whatever it hits. When a player hits an entity with it, one armor slot is chosen at random and the piece in that slot is removed and dropped. The player then has a 10-tick (0.5-second) cooldown on the item, and the Curse's hurt sound plays. Its tooltip describes it as taking an enemy's armor pieces off.
Tips
- Expect armor loss. Each hit the Curse lands can strip a different slot, so pick up dropped armor pieces after the fight.
- Stay more than 8 blocks from a Curse that is not targeting you to avoid Insanity. Insanity lasts up to 3 seconds after leaving the aura.
- A Curse that is not killed stays in the world. Leftover Curses do not despawn.
- A Curse from a Curse Spawn Egg is a controlled encounter, since it appears only where the egg is used.
- Cursed Heads can strip armor from other mobs as well as players, so one is useful against heavily armored enemies.
