The Ether Ghost is a hostile flying mob added by Sons of Sins. It has 10 health (5 hearts), attacks for 3 damage (1.5 hearts) and is classed as a monster. Each ghost has a variant from 0 to 5, chosen when it is created, that controls its appearance and the creature it summons when fed. It is tied to blood and flesh: it is created when a player dies in a blood pool, it is pulled in by flesh items, and it can be summoned with a spawn egg.
The Ether Ghost has no natural spawn entries, so it does not appear on its own in any biome. Its population is set entirely by player actions, which means the pack's horror biome weighting and night-time danger do not affect it directly. Its behaviour is worth knowing before fighting it, because it ends in a single grab attack that removes the ghost and hurts the victim.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
The Ether Ghost is created in three ways:
- Blood death. When a player dies standing in a blood pool, the blood block at that spot is removed and one Ether Ghost is created there, with a random variant from 0 to 5. The ghost is given a small upward push and takes the player's facing. One ghost is created per death.
- Spawn egg. The Ether Ghost Spawn Egg places one ghost per use. The egg stacks to 64. Its variant is then picked at random from 0 to 5 when it spawns.
- Summoning by flesh. A ghost can create other creatures by consuming flesh (see Behavior). This does not create new ghosts.
No structure places Ether Ghosts, and no biome spawns them naturally.
Behavior
Movement and targeting
The Ether Ghost flies. It ignores gravity, can pass through blocks, takes no fall damage and cannot be pushed by other entities. Its movement speed and flying speed are both 0.3, and its follow range is 16 blocks. It gives no experience when killed.
It targets the nearest player within 16 blocks and ignores other mobs. When it is not hunting, it drifts in random directions within 16 blocks of its position at speed 0.8. When it has a target, it flies to the target's eye level. Once it is within about 4 blocks, it moves in close and attacks in melee. It also fights back against any entity that damages it.
Grab attack
When the ghost reaches a player in Survival or Adventure mode, it seizes that player and the player rides the ghost. Players in Creative or Spectator mode are not seized, but the ghost still attacks them in melee.
While the player is held:
- A "scream" countdown runs for 12 ticks (0.6 seconds).
- The rider is given Slowness at an amplifier of 60 each tick, which keeps them from moving. They are also given Darkness for 2 seconds.
- Open containers are closed, and a scream sound plays.
When the countdown ends, the rider takes 3 damage from a mob attack and is released, and the ghost removes itself. The grab is therefore a single-use attack: each ghost delivers one grab and then disappears.
Flesh feeding and summoning
The ghost is drawn to flesh items within about 10 blocks and moves toward them. Flesh items are those in the is_flesh tag (Flesh of Demise, and the Ribs, Muscle and Heart organ items) and the flesh_blocks tag (the Flesh Block and the organ storage blocks). The ghost also pulls nearby flesh items toward itself.
When a flesh item reaches the ghost, it is consumed and adds to the ghost's feeding progress:
- A flesh block adds 9 progress.
- Any other flesh item adds 1 progress.
Progress is shown to nearby players on the action bar as a value out of 1500. Once progress reaches 1500, the next flesh item the ghost touches summons a creature instead: the ghost removes itself, a sound plays, and the server broadcasts a message naming the dimension. The creature summoned depends on the ghost's variant (see below). Killing a ghost before it reaches 1500 prevents the summon.
Variants
The variant is a number from 0 to 5. It controls the ghost's look and the creature it summons when it has been fed.
| Variant | Summons |
|---|---|
| 0 | Prowler |
| 1 | Kelvin |
| 2 | Curse |
| 3 | The Butcher |
| 4 | Walking Bed |
| 5 | Wistiver |
Interaction with Soul Steel
The ghost is repelled by blocks in the wither-immune tag, which includes the Soul Steel blocks and the Ether Lantern. When it comes near them, its movement is pushed away from them. Building with these blocks around a base or a fighting space limits where the ghost can hover.
Drops
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Ether Ashes | x8.0-16.0 |
A killed Ether Ghost drops 8 to 16 Ether Ashes from a single roll. The drop is not increased by Looting. Ether Ashes are used to craft Soul Steel and to make crystallized ether in blood pools.
Tips
- Creative and Spectator players cannot be seized, so the grab is avoidable in those modes. The ghost still attacks them normally.
- A seized player cannot move for the 0.6-second countdown. Kill the ghost before it reaches its target, or accept the 3 damage and let the grab end.
- Keep flesh items off the ground near a base. Flesh blocks are the fastest way to feed a ghost (9 progress each), and a ghost left near a stockpile of flesh can reach 1500 quickly.
- Avoid dying in blood pools in the first place. The death creates a ghost at that spot.
