The Kelvin is a hostile sin creature added by Sons of Sins for Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge. It is a high-health melee monster, with 560 health (280 hearts) and 25 damage per hit, and it moves at four times the base walking speed of a player. Kelvin is tagged as a sin creature, so Sinful tools deal extra damage to it, and it is also tagged as undead. It is the source of a guaranteed Soul Steel and Ether Engine drop, and an Ether Engine is required in the inventory to use the Puppet of Strife.
Spawning
Kelvin has no natural spawn entries in any biome, so it never appears on its own in the overworld, the Nether or the End. It is found in two ways:
- Spawn egg. The Kelvin Spawn Egg spawns one Kelvin at the point where it is used. The egg stacks to 64.
- Ether Ghost summoning. Only variant 1 of Ether Ghost summons Kelvin. Other variants summon other sin creatures, such as Prowlers for variant 0. When an Ether Ghost of this variant has a flesh progression of 1500 and flesh items are in its reach, it summons one Kelvin at its own position. The new Kelvin is given a random facing. The summon also sends a system message to all players, naming the dimension where it happened. Ether Ghosts are produced by the blood death rules described in Blood Pools, Slicing and Ether Ashes.
Each summon creates exactly one Kelvin. Kelvin is persistent and does not despawn when no player is nearby, so a Kelvin left alive stays in the world until it is killed.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Behavior
Kelvin is a Monster with 0 armor, 560 maximum health, 25 attack damage, a movement speed of 0.4, a follow range of 64 blocks and a knockback resistance of 0.5. Its hitbox is 0.6 by 1.95 blocks, and it can step up ledges up to 2 blocks high. Kelvin gives no experience when it dies. Its entity tracking range is 128 blocks, so it is rendered from much further away than most mobs.
Targeting. Kelvin's primary target is the nearest Player within 64 blocks. It does not need line of sight to acquire a target. It also retaliates against whatever damages it. It breaks doors on every difficulty, so doors do not stop it.
Melee. Kelvin moves toward its target at a chase speed of 1.2 times its movement speed. When it is within 1.5 blocks of its target and can see it, it swings for 25 damage. Melee swings follow the default cooldown of 20 ticks, which is one swing per second.
Ranged attack. Kelvin also has a ranged attack goal that fires every 20 ticks at targets within 1.25 blocks. The projectile it fires is created with a base damage of 0 and is removed on its first tick, so the ranged attack deals no damage. In practice, Kelvin's only damage source is its melee attack.
Immunities. Kelvin takes no damage from fall damage, drowning or dragon breath.
Movement. When it has no target, Kelvin wanders randomly at a speed of 0.4 and looks around. Walking away from Kelvin does not outrun it, because its speed is four times the base walking speed of a player (0.1) and faster than sprinting (0.13).
Drops
Kelvin's loot table has two pools, and each pool rolls once with no conditions, so both drops occur on every kill:
- Soul Steel: 1 to 5, uniformly distributed.
- Ether Engine: exactly 1.
Looting does not change either count, because the loot table has no looting modifier. The Puppet of Strife requires an Ether Engine in the inventory, so Kelvin is a source of that item.
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Soul Steel | x1.0-5.0 | |
Ether Engine | x1.0-1.0 |
Tips
- Kelvin hits for 25 per swing. Fight it with a retreat path, and avoid standing within its 1.5-block melee reach.
- You cannot escape Kelvin by running on foot. Doors do not hold it, and it can climb 2-block steps. Plan for a fight rather than an escape.
- Sinful tools deal four times their normal damage to sin creatures, which makes them the most efficient weapons against Kelvin. See Sons of Sins Tools and Armor.
- Butcher Cleaver adds 2 damage for each point of missing health on the attacker, so it hits harder when you are low. Sickle of Struggle and Butcher Cleaver are slicer weapons: a slicer hit resets the target's hit invulnerability, which allows faster successive hits.
- Combat effects from organ items apply to Kelvin on hit. Hercules Fury adds 6 plus 2 per amplifier to your damage. Arctic Cells freeze the target for 320 to 640 ticks. Acid Bloodstream applies Poison IV for 100 ticks. Boiling sets the target on fire for 6 to 16 seconds. See Sons of Sins Effects.
- Kelvin has 0.5 knockback resistance, so knockback from your hits moves it only half as far as it would move an ordinary mob.
- The Instinct effect reduces incoming damage to 70 percent and gives a 15 percent chance per hit to teleport to a safe block near the attacker, which helps when Kelvin is hitting you.
