The Walking Bed is a hostile sin creature added by Sons of Sins. It has 840 health (420 hearts) and a 35-damage melee attack. For comparison, Blud has 540 health, Kelvin 560, The Butcher 650 and Curse 350. Its signature attack is to catch a player, pin them as a passenger and then strike them, so it is a mob to avoid in open combat rather than one to trade blows with.
The Walking Bed is 1.1 blocks wide and 2.8 blocks tall, and it never despawns. It gives no experience when killed.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
The Walking Bed does not spawn naturally. Its code registers no spawn placement for any biome, and Sons of Sins places it in no structure. It appears in the world in two ways:
- Spawn egg. The Walking Bed Spawn Egg (
Walking Bed Spawn Egg) summons one Walking Bed where it is used. The egg stacks to 64. - Ether Ghost. An Ether Ghost absorbs flesh items (items in the flesh tags of the mod) that drift onto it. When its flesh progression reaches 1500, it summons the sin that matches its variant, removes itself, and sends a server-wide message ("Someone has awaken a sin, [Dimension] is doomed..."). Variant 4 of the six Ether Ghost variants summons a Walking Bed. Ether Ghosts themselves are produced by blood-related deaths (see Blood Pools, Slicing and Ether Ashes).
Behavior
The Walking Bed walks at a speed of 0.3 and targets players. It also attacks any entity that hurts it. It ignores drowning and dragon's breath damage, and it is classed as undead for vanilla effects that depend on the undead tag. It takes no knockback.
Melee attack and the grab
When its target is within about 1.75 blocks, the Walking Bed starts a 26-tick swing after a cooldown of at least 10 ticks. The hit lands on the thirteenth tick of the swing if the target is within about 3 blocks.
- Against a non-player, the hit deals 35 damage and pushes the target away.
- Against a player, the hit makes the player its passenger and starts a 12-tick scream. While the player is held, they receive Darkness for 40 ticks and a heavy slowdown. When the scream ends, the player takes 35 damage and is released.
After any hit, the Walking Bed waits a random 50 to 105 ticks (about 3 to 6 seconds) before it can swing again. Because 35 damage exceeds the 20 health of a full-health player before armor is applied, the grab is the most dangerous part of the fight.
Freezing when stared at
While a player at more than half health looks directly at the Walking Bed (within roughly 18 degrees of its centre, with line of sight), it stops moving. It does not freeze in the middle of a swing or a scream. Once the player looks away, it resumes walking at 0.3.
At 50 percent health or less, this freeze no longer applies. Instead, the Walking Bed moves at 0.32 and its hitbox drops to 40 percent of its height, about 1.1 blocks.
Breaking through walls
If solid blocks block its path for 50 ticks (about 2.5 seconds), the Walking Bed turns to face its target and enters a breaking state for up to 85 ticks. In this state its swings break blocks in a 3 by 3 by 3 area in front of it, including blocks with a hardness of 50 or less (obsidian has hardness 50). It does not grab a player in this state, and it lunges forward after each swing. Walls and doors do not hold it for long.
Ranged attack and auras
The Walking Bed has a ranged attack, but the projectile is removed on its first tick and deals no damage. Its real threat is its aura. Players within 1.75 to 8 blocks of it receive Darkness, Slowness and Insanity. While it is not in a freeze, the Walking Bed also applies Insanity for 20 ticks to its current target, as long as the target is within 64 blocks (Manhattan distance).
In water or lava, the Walking Bed turns toward its target and is pushed toward it.
Drops
| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Bloody Bone | x1.0-1.0 | |
Puppet Of Strife | x1.0-1.0 |
The Walking Bed always drops one
Bloody Bone and one
Puppet of Strife. Each drop is a single roll with no looting or other drop modifier. The Puppet of Strife is a late-game item that cancels explosion damage to its holder when an Ether Engine is in the inventory or a filled Urn is held.
Tips
- Keep more than 3 blocks away from it. Its grab happens within that range, and the 35-damage hit is the main threat.
- Look directly at it while it is above half health to freeze it in place. The freeze does not apply during a swing or a scream, so keep an eye on its state.
- Do not rely on walls. Once it has been blocked for about 2.5 seconds, it starts breaking through.
- The Walking Bed cannot be knocked back and gives no experience, so the only reward for fighting it is its two drops.
