The Grub is a hostile, large flesh creature added by Sons of Sins. It has 120 health (60 hearts), hits for 16 damage, and can be tamed. Grubs do not generate naturally in the world, so a player meets one mainly through a spawn egg, through a Grub splitting, or through a summon. Their drops and the Cell Division effect tie them to the rest of the mod's flesh and organ items.
Spawning
A Grub has no natural biome spawn entries and no spawn placement rules. No structure in the Sons of Sins data places one, and the Sons of Sins structure placement changes in Fear Nightfall affect the surrounding structures, not the Grub. Grubs come from three sources:
- Spawn egg. The Grub Spawn Egg (
Grub Spawn Egg) summons one. The egg stacks to 64. - Cell Division splitting. A Grub that dies while affected by Cell Division is replaced by two baby Grubs (see Grub).
- Summoning. Other mod mechanics can place a Grub directly, such as a summon-type spawn, but no fixed world source is documented.
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
Behavior
A wild Grub is hostile to players. Its target logic uses three goals:
- It targets the nearest player within its follow range of 16 blocks.
- It retaliates against whatever hurts it.
- It attacks anything that attacks its owner, once tamed.
A Grub that is tamed no longer targets players.
Movement. The movement attribute is 0.12, but the Grub's tick procedure resets its base speed to 0.24 every tick while it has no rider. The effective walking speed is therefore 0.24 blocks per tick, which is faster than a sprinting player. While a player is riding it, the speed drops back to 0.12. Right-clicking a Grub always mounts the player on it, so the Grub can be steered by the rider. It steps up blocks 1.6 high.
Melee. The Grub has a standard melee goal that attacks a target within 2 blocks with line of sight, using its 16 attack damage. A separate timed strike runs in the tick procedure. When the target is within 8 blocks, a hidden counter increases each tick. After 12 ticks of that, if the target is within 2 blocks, the Grub starts a 20-tick attack animation. About 9 ticks into the animation, it hits the target for 16 damage and pushes it slightly forward and upward. The strike only lands on the chosen target, not on other entities in the area.
Ranged. The Grub also fires a Null Pr projectile at its target within 2 blocks. The projectile has no base damage in the source, so the ranged attack deals no direct damage.
Organs as armor. A Grub's four armor slots hold organs, and each organ applies its effect to the Grub while it is worn. Food-type organs apply their effects at 33 percent of the normal duration, with the same amplifier.
- A worn Golem Cuirass grants Damage Resistance I for 60 ticks and negates fall damage.
- A worn Slime Rear grants Cell Division for 60 ticks.
Cell Division. Cell Division is the mod's status effect that makes a creature split on death (see below). A worn Slime Rear is the source that applies it to a Grub in the Grub's own code.
Taming. A Grub is tamed by feeding it an item from the is_flesh tag, such as Flesh of Demise, Hearts, Muscles or Ribs. Each feeding has a 1 in 3 chance to tame the Grub, and the item is consumed either way. A tamed Grub heals by the food's nutrition when fed while injured.
Death and splitting
When a Grub dies, it checks for the Cell Division effect.
- With Cell Division. The Grub is discarded and two baby Grubs appear beside it. Each baby keeps the original's target, its owner and tamed status, its custom name if it had one, and its worn armor. A Slime Rear worn on the feet is replaced by Ribs in the baby's copy. Both babies are set as babies.
- Without Cell Division, while wearing armor. The Grub drops a Flesh Carcass (
Flesh Carcass). The carcass holds the feet, legs and chest items, and a Bottle of Blood with a capacity of 2. A carcass keeps the Grub's custom name. - Always. The Grub drops one Flesh of Demise (
Flesh of Demise) on death, whatever its state.
Drops
Every Grub drops one Flesh of Demise on death, plus a Flesh Carcass if it was wearing armor and did not split. Flesh of Demise gives Blood Scent when eaten, and it is one of the items that tames a Grub. The Flesh Carcass is listed under Grub.
Grub
No item drops.
Variants
The Grub Organs entity is a second, related mob. It is a hostile Monster with 10 health, 3 attack damage and a movement speed of 0.3. It has no AI, so it does not move. It never despawns, and players cannot damage it directly. It keeps the ids of three organ items (ribs, heart and muscle) for display. Its stats are listed below with the Grub.
| Mob | Health | Damage | Armor | Speed | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grub | 120.0 | 16.0 | 1.0 | 0.12 | 1.25×1.2 | Hostile |
| Grub Organs | 10.0 | 3.0 | 0.3 | 0.6×1.8 | Hostile |
Tips
- Stay out of reach. The strike and the melee goal both need the target within 2 blocks. The wind-up animation is visible before the hit, so stepping back as it starts gives time to move.
- Expect the speed. A Grub with no rider covers ground faster than a sprinting player, so running away rarely works. Its target search reaches 16 blocks, so hiding nearby is not a reliable escape.
- Plan for the split. Killing a Grub that has Cell Division produces two babies instead of a corpse. Keep the Grub out of a worn Slime Rear, which applies Cell Division, if you want a single death.
- Tame for an ally. Feeding Flesh of Demise or organs is a one-in-three chance per item. A tamed Grub stops attacking players and fights whatever attacks its owner, which makes it a useful guard in a horror base.
- Collect the carcass. A Grub dressed in armor drops its gear in a Flesh Carcass, which also holds a Bottle of Blood. Pick it up soon after the kill, because the carcass is an item and can be lost to a blood pool or despawn.
