The Sons of Sins mod (sons_of_sins) is a content add-on built around a flesh, organ and ether theme. It adds about twenty hostile creatures, most of them named after one of the seven sins, together with a blood fluid, organ foods that grant timed status effects, a set of unbreakable tools, a soul-steel building material and one structure, the Sinful Church. Players encounter it mainly as night-time combat against the sin creatures and as a source of crafting materials gathered from blood pools and killed mobs.
Overview
The mod is a horror-themed addition rather than a progression overhaul. Its creatures are the most dangerous part of its content: several have very high health and hit hard, and a number of them apply Insanity, Darkness or Slowness to nearby players. Its items fall into three groups. Combat tools and armor make kills and organ drops possible, organ items grant buffs, and building materials and ether ashes serve as crafting inputs. The mod also changes how several vanilla systems behave, including invulnerability frames, fall and explosion damage and reach, so a player who only sees its creatures in passing will still notice its effects elsewhere in the game.
In Fear Nightfall the mod is one of the main horror sources in temperate and humid forests, taigas and swamps. Its structure and its creatures are placed with the other horror content listed on the Horror and Spooky Content page. See Fear Nightfall for the pack as a whole.
Content
Creatures
The creatures are hostile monsters or tamable flesh creatures. Seven of them are tagged as sins, which is the tag that the Sinful tools' damage bonus checks. Notable creatures include:
- Gulber, a tamable flesh creature with 40 health that emits the Cell Division aura.
- Devourer, a tamable flesh creature with 30 health that heals itself by 2 health for each hit it lands.
- Grub, a large tamable creature with 120 health.
- Guzzler, a tamable creature that can attack players and other hostile mobs from other mods. A separate Betrayed Guzzler is the only creature with a natural spawn rule (see Natural spawning under Mechanics).
- Nibbler, a tamable flesh creature that can be created from a Nibbler Bucket and attacks players, villagers and water animals.
- Blud, a creature with 540 health and 30 attack damage that is produced when a player or villager walks into blood.
- Ether Ghost, a flying-style creature with 10 health and three attack damage, produced by blood-related deaths.
- Kelvin (560 health, 25 attack damage), The Butcher (650 health, 50 attack damage), Prowler, Walking Bed and Wistiver, which hunts players.
- Curse, a flying creature with 350 health and 4 attack damage. Each of its hits removes a random armor piece from the victim.
- Ditched, a weak creature with 40 health and 1 attack damage that targets any living entity.
Several creatures have a spawn egg, and the flesh creatures can be tamed. The mod also has organ-form monster entities for Gulber, Grub, Devourer, Guzzler and Nibbler.
Items and blocks
- Tools. The Sinful set (sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe) is unbreakable and fire resistant. The Osseous set and the Flesh set are earlier tools, and the Flesh set regenerates over time. The Butcher Cleaver, Sickle of Struggle, Ether Sword and Shape-Shifting Tool are special-purpose weapons and tools. Wistiver's Jaws, Touch of Greed, Hand of Riot, Puppet of Strife and Ether Engine are magic-style items. See Sons of Sins Tools and Armor.
- Armor. The Remnant set has a custom material with defense values of 2, 5, 6 and 2 for boots, leggings, chestplate and helmet respectively.
- Organs and food. Ribs, Muscle, Heart, Flesh of Demise, Creeper Ribs, Charged Creeper Ribs, Strider Muscle, Slime Rear, Ice Heart, Ravager Muscle, Spider Heart, Blazing Heart, Enderman Muscle and Golem Cuirass are all edible. Each one grants a status effect when eaten, as described under Organ foods in Mechanics. The Blazing Heart is also furnace fuel. The organ blocks are listed on Organ and Muscle Blocks.
- Materials. Ether (Ether Ashes and Crystallized Ether), Soul Steel and its building blocks, Bloody Bone, Blood Ball, Blood Bucket, Nibbler Buckets, the Urn and the Flesh Carcass are the main crafting and storage items. Miscellaneous items are listed on Sons of Sins Miscellaneous.
- Blood. Blood is a custom fluid with its own bucket and bottles. See Blood for the fluid itself and Blood Pools, Slicing and Ether Ashes for how it is used.
Status effects
The mod adds thirteen mob effects, including Allure, Last Breath, Insanity, Greed, Hydrophobia, Cell Division, Hercules Fury, Arctic Cells and Acid Bloodstream. Effects are described on Sons of Sins Effects.
Structures
The mod adds one structure, the Sinful Church. It is a single-piece jigsaw structure that generates in forests and contains a chest with Ether Ashes, Iron and Ether, Ribs, Hearts, Muscles, Flesh of Demise, Osseous tools, the Sickle of Struggle, a Nibbler Bucket and a few ordinary items.
Advancements
The mod adds twelve advancements, listed below.
Mechanics
Blood pools
Blood is a flowing fluid that ticks every ten ticks. The pool pulls nearby item entities into an etheric blood imbibation recipe, which turns some items into other items. Examples are Ether Ashes into Crystallized Ether, Iron ingots into Soul Steel and vanilla records into the Sins music disc. Players and villagers that walk into blood can cause a Blud to appear, if no Blud is already within two blocks. Dying in blood has special cases. A chicken that dies in blood is restored to full health. A player that dies in blood has the blood block removed and an Ether Ghost appears. See Blood Pools, Slicing and Ether Ashes.
Slicing and organ drops
Sickle of Struggle and Butcher Cleaver are slicer tools. A slicer hit removes the victim's hit invulnerability, so repeated slicer hits land immediately. A slicer kill rolls one of ten organ loot tables (creeper, spider, cave spider, enderman, blaze, iron golem, ravager, slime, snow golem and strider). Slicer kills also contribute to bottle-of-blood progress. Blood-death drops (Ribs, Muscle, Heart or Flesh of Demise) are also possible.
Ether Ashes and the Urn
Killing a mob with an Osseous or Sinful tool produces Ether Ashes, with a count of 10 percent of the victim's maximum health, rounded up. The Urn holds up to nine Ether Ashes and has its own block and item GUI. Ashes stored in an Urn power the Ether Sword, which has a 30 percent chance to use them on a hit, and the Puppet of Strife, which requires them.
Organ foods
Eating an organ grants a timed effect. Ribs, Muscle, Heart and Flesh of Demise grant Allure for 1200 ticks. Creeper Ribs and Charged Creeper Ribs grant Last Breath for 1200 ticks, with the charged version at amplifier 2. Strider Muscle grants Fire Resistance and Hydrophobia for 600 ticks each. Slime Rear grants Confusion for 200 ticks and Stretchy Tendons for 100 ticks. Ice Heart grants Arctic Cells for 600 ticks. Ravager Muscle grants Slowness III and Hercules Fury for 600 ticks each. Blazing Heart grants Boiling for 600 ticks. Spider Heart grants Acid Bloodstream for 600 ticks. Enderman Muscle and Golem Cuirass grant no effect.
Combat effects
- Hercules Fury adds 6 plus 2 times its amplifier to the attacker's damage.
- Arctic Cells freezes the target for 320 to 640 ticks on a hit.
- Acid Bloodstream gives the target Poison IV for 100 ticks on a hit.
- Boiling sets the target on fire for 6 to 16 seconds on a hit.
- Instinct reduces incoming damage to 70 percent and gives a 15 percent chance per hit to teleport to a nearby block, when the holder is not in water.
- Greed removes fall damage from the target, slows its descent when the block below is empty and stops it from jumping.
- Insanity changes the camera angle and the fog near the sin creatures. The Curse applies Insanity to players within 8 blocks of it and to its current target.
- Cell Division is spread by Gulber, Grub, Devourer, Guzzler and Nibbler and their organ forms. It grants Damage Resistance and Cell Division to nearby creatures within a radius of 1.25 to 8 blocks.
- Hydrophobia deals magic damage to entities in water or rain, except water animals. In Fear Nightfall it deals damage once per second.
Weapons
- The Butcher Cleaver adds 2 damage for each point of health the wielder is missing.
- Sinful tools deal four times their damage to sin creatures.
- Wistiver's Jaws adds jaw damage with each hit, capped by the
jawsDamageLimitgamerule, which defaults to 666. - Hand of Riot makes all mobs within 8 blocks of the holder target the holder.
- Touch of Greed deals 4 to 9 magic damage and can pull a Bottle of Blood from the victim's inventory when used on a player who has an Urn.
- The Puppet of Strife cancels explosion damage for its holder while it has the required ether, and cancels fall damage when the Golem Cuirass is the held organ. The cancelled hit sets the item's cooldown and empties the item.
Shape-Shifting Tool
The Shape-Shifting Tool chooses a pickaxe, shovel or axe role for each block when it is harvested. It has 1600 durability.
Natural spawning
The Betrayed Guzzler spawns naturally in the Overworld with a spawn weight of 4 and groups of one or two. Other creatures have no natural spawn rules, so they are found through spawn eggs, blood triggers and the Sinful Church chest.
Changes to vanilla
- Slicer tools and the Nibbler remove the hit invulnerability of their targets.
- The Curse removes a random armor piece from each victim, which is dropped on the ground.
- Monsters within 4 blocks of a player with Allure target that player, including monsters from other mods.
- Creeper Ribs in either hand become Charged Creeper Ribs when struck by lightning.
- The Shape-Shifting Tool overrides the vanilla harvest logic for its items, and the Sinful tools have no durability limit.
- Several items have changed reach values. The Sickle has a lower entity interaction range, while the Butcher Cleaver and Flesh sword have higher ones.
- The mod adds itself to several vanilla item tags, including the meat, music disc, armor slot and undead tags. Food and undead-aware mods therefore treat some of its items and creatures as vanilla items and mobs.
- The mod replaces two vanilla shader files, the entity translucent and armor cutout shaders. The replacements are fog-aware and affect every mob and armor piece in the game.
In Fear Nightfall
- Fear Nightfall places the Sinful Church and the mod's other horror structures about 30 percent closer together, and gives them 6 times the weight when they share a structure set with other structures. Horror structures concentrate in temperate and cool humid forests, taigas and swamps. Deserts, jungles and peaks are mostly unaffected.
- The Hydrophobia effect deals damage once per second in water or rain. The mod's own code applies it every tick, so the pack reduced its rate.
- The mod's creatures and structures are part of the pack's night-time horror content. See Horror and Spooky Content for the other horror mods.
