Structures

Structures are the buildings, ruins, camps and landmarks that generate in the world on top of vanilla terrain. Fear Nightfall draws them from more than thirty mods, which together place about 400 structure sets: roughly 290 in the Overworld, about 70 in the Nether and about 30 in the End. They supply most of the pack's exploration, from villages and outposts that offer trade and loot, to horror sites that are dangerous to enter, to small landmarks that reward travelling across a biome.

The pack does not simply stack every mod's structures on top of one another. Its placement rules change how often each structure appears, which structures may share ground, and what their chests hold. These rules are summarised below. The full table of every structure, with its mod, dimension, biomes, spacing and loot, is at the end of the page.

Structures come from several mods, grouped here by role. Each group has its own page with the detail.

Placement rules

The spacing and separation values in the table are the in-game values, already scaled by the pack's Sparse Structures setting. That setting controls how far apart the structures of each set generate. The pack tunes it per set rather than applying one factor to everything.

• Common structures are thinned. Most non-horror structures generate roughly three times less often than they would at the mods' default spacing. On a 26 km² test sample, the count fell from 1,542 to 492.
• Horror structures are increased. Horror structures generate about twice as often as before. On the same sample, the count rose from 578 to 1,071. See the horror families below.
• Every set has its own seed. Each placement set uses its own random seed. Mods that had reused seeds used to place their structures on identical spots, and this no longer happens.
• An overlap guard removes collisions. When a surface structure is placed, larger structures from other sets that would start nearby are assembled the way the game would assemble them. If their footprints really overlap, the smaller structure is skipped. The result does not depend on the order in which chunks generate. On the test sample, surface overlaps fell from 238 to 5.
• Villages keep a buffer. Other surface structures keep a 6-chunk margin around village locations. Village intrusions fell from 141 to about zero on the same sample.

Structures that share a placement set never stack on one spot. The game chooses among the types that are valid for the local biome. Villages, pillager outposts and witch huts are all shared in this way. Luki's Grand Capitals builds are separate from the vanilla ones, so both the vanilla and the Luki's versions of a village can appear. The Towns and Towers biome tags were rebuilt as a union of the vanilla and modded biomes, instead of replacing them, so the Biomes O' Plenty, Regions Unexplored and Terralith biomes keep their villages and outposts. The 515 structures that could only generate in vanilla biomes, about 15% of land, now also generate in matching modded biomes. The Nether and End use hand-picked matches. Only the mushroom-island structures remain vanilla-only.

Horror structures

The pack counts many of its structures as horror, and these are the sites where the pack's danger is concentrated. Horror structures are placed about 30% closer together than the mods' default spacing. Where a horror structure shares a placement set with other structures, it is given six times the weight. Horror structures appear most often in temperate-to-cool, humid forests, taigas and swamps, where about a quarter of structures are horror. Deserts, jungles and peaks remain mostly normal.

The horror families are:

• the Graveyard structures, including Graveyards and the Lich Prison
• Born in Chaos structures, such as the Infernal Pumpkin Patch and the Clown Caravan
• the Sleepy Hollows graveyard
• Sons of Sins structures, such as the Sinful Church
• Hexerei covens and witch huts, and all Witch Huts
• the Dungeons and Taverns crypts and toxic lair, gallows, dead trees, skulls, mausoleum, Catacombs and prisons
• the skeleton, spider and zombie dungeons from YUNG's Better Structures

Horror sites are dangerous at night. The Graveyard's horde arrives every night (see The Hordes), and players mostly meet its creatures as night-time combat. The Sleepy Hollows biome drains the Sanity meter of any player who spends time in it.

Loot

Every structure-mod chest table, 387 in total, is mapped to the vanilla chest it stands in for. A tavern chest counts as a village house, a crypt chest as a dungeon, and a mage tower chest as a stronghold library. Each structure keeps its original loot, and the modded additions are added on top. Loot from Iron's Spells, Farmer's Delight, Butchery, Tide, Nether Expansion and Critters and Companions reaches the mapped chests. Supplementaries and Traveler's Backpack add their items to chests with matching vanilla table names. Sixteen chests referenced loot tables that their mods never shipped, and these now roll the mapped vanilla loot instead of generating empty. Each mapped table was rolled 200 to 300 times in testing, and 368 of the 371 mapped tables receive every expected addition. The three misses are porkchop-swap modifiers on tables that contain no porkchops.

YUNG's replacement temples, fortresses and strongholds have their own chests, which normally lack trims and the Blazing Fishing Rod. Trims were added to these chests at vanilla-like odds, and Tide, Iron's and Traveler's Backpack loot was extended to them.

Mods that have no loot modifiers, such as The Graveyard, Born in Chaos and Sleepy Hollows, keep their own chests and loot unchanged. For how chests and their loot tables work in general, see Loot and Chests. For per-player chests, see Lootr.

Finding structures

Structures are located with the commands and tools described in Finding Structures and Biomes. Nature's Compass is a biome finder that is part of the pack. The vanilla swamp hut is disabled by the YUNG's mod, so the /locate command for swamp_hut finds nothing. The YUNG's witch hut is located with betterwitchhuts:witch_hut instead. For how structures are generated in general, see World Generation.
