Villages

From the Fear Nightfall wiki · Minecraft

The Village is a surface structure of the Overworld: a settlement of houses, workplaces and roads with villagers inside. In Fear Nightfall the village set is merged. Vanilla villages share the minecraft:villages structure set with Overhauled Villages, Luki's Grand Capitals, Towns and Towers Villages, Villages&Pillages and the Dungeons and Taverns villages, plus the Terralith fortified villages. Each location gets one village type from this set, so the packs replace one another's placements rather than stacking on the same ground.

Villages are the places where a player finds villagers and their chests. The pack's horror structures are a separate group, and villages are not among them.

Generation

Villages generate in the Overworld on the surface_structures step, and their placement is controlled by the structure spacing settings shown in the infobox. The type chosen at a location depends on the local biome. Vanilla villages use the tags for plains, desert, savanna, snowy and taiga biomes. Overhauled Villages adds mountain, beach, mushroom field, jungle, badlands, swamp and dark forest variants, and Towns and Towers uses biome tags that combine the vanilla village tags with the tags added by other biome mods.

The Fear Nightfall pack changes three things about village generation:

  • Coexistence. The village types are weighted equally across the packs. The game only places one village type on a spot, so they never stack.
  • Modded biomes. 515 structures that could previously spawn only in vanilla biomes now also spawn in matching modded biomes. The matches use shared climate and biome type. The Nether and End use hand-picked matches. Mushroom island structures remain vanilla-only.
  • Density. Non-horror structures in the pack are placed about three times less often than at the mods' default spacing. On a 26 km² test sample this changed the count from 1,542 to 492.

Other surface structures keep a 6-chunk buffer around every village spot. On the same test sample, the number of villages overlapped by other structures dropped from 141 to about zero.

Layout

Each village type is built from jigsaw pieces. The layout starts from a town centre and grows outward along a road network, drawing houses, decorations, workplaces and terminator pieces from the pools for its biome.

Overhauled Villages adds 21 biome-themed variants, each in three sizes: small, medium and large. Its jigsaw depth is 4 for small villages, 5 for medium and 6 for large in most variants. At default settings the size weights are 10 for small, 4 for medium and 1 for large. With all 21 variants enabled, this gives 63 entries with a total weight of 315. The buildings use vanilla blocks, and blocks from other mods are added only when those mods are loaded.

Towns and Towers adds about 25 village variants. Luki's Grand Capitals rebuilds the village set with its own builds, which are separate from the vanilla villages, so both appear. Villages & Pillages adds a witch village. Dungeons and Taverns also has villages in the set.

Inhabitants

Villagers come from the vanilla villager content in the village pieces. Overhauled Villages adds no villager trades of its own.

The pillager outposts in the set are a separate structure. They spawn monsters such as pillagers, evokers, vindicators and witches, and they are not part of a village's own placement.

Loot

Each village chest keeps its vanilla loot. Chests from the structure mods are mapped to the vanilla chest they stand in for: tavern chests map to village house chests, for example. The original loot of each mapped chest is kept, and the modded additions are added on top. Loot from Iron's Spells, Farmer's Delight, Butchery, Tide, Nether Expansion and Critters and Companions reaches these mapped chests.

Overhauled Villages adds 12 chest loot tables of its own. They cover the house variants and the bakery, farm, forager, library and smith chests, and the warehouses of the badlands, beach, dark forest, jungle, mountain, mushroom and swamp villages. The chest tables are listed below.

Tips

  • Search plains, desert, savanna, snowy and taiga biomes first, since those carry the vanilla village tags. Villages from the packs also appear in the biomes listed on their own pages.
  • Use /locate structure with a village's structure id to find a specific village type. Overhauled Villages entries use the ctov: namespace.
  • The pillager outposts are the hostile structures placed near the village set, so check the nearest outpost before you spend time in a village.
