Villages&Pillages

The Villages&Pillages mod adds one village type to the world, the witch village, which generates in swamp biomes. It is a worldgen mod with no new items, blocks or mobs: the village is built from its own structure templates and populated with vanilla witches and cats. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the horror structures of the swamps, and it competes with other village mods for the same village slot.
Overview
Villages&Pillages is a structure mod. It registers a single village structure, villagesandpillages:village_witch, with a custom set of house, road, decoration and entity templates. The village has a central plaza, small and medium houses, dead trees, villager cages, roads with crossroads and dead-end pieces, and a waystone in the centre. Its houses are aged with moss and cobblestone and carry a lit signal-fire campfire, so the village reads as abandoned.
In Fear Nightfall the mod's only role is this witch village. It is one of the several village styles that share the minecraft:villages structure set (see Villages), so it can be placed in any swamp biome a village is allowed to spawn in, but it never stacks on the same spot as another village.
Content
The mod adds one structure, which is listed below with its placement, biomes and chest loot.
Biomes (12): Bayou, Floodplain, Mangrove Swamp, Bayou, Willow Swamp, Swamp, Marsh, Fen, Wetland, Bog, Marsh, Fungal Fen
The village is the swamp member of the Fear Nightfall village set. Other village styles from the pack are documented on their own pages: Villages for the merged set, Towns and Towers Villages, Overhauled Villages, Fortified Villages and Underground Village for the other village mods. The witch-hut family, which is the closest relative of this village, is covered on Witch Huts, including the Hexerei Witch Hut and Witch Circle.
Village layout
The village is built from a start piece in the centre, joined by road pieces that branch into small and medium houses. Each house pool holds several templates, with small houses weighted slightly above medium ones. Terminator pieces close off the ends of roads so the village does not grow without bound. Decoration pieces add dead trees and villager cages. The village has a jigsaw depth of 7 and a maximum distance of 63 blocks from its centre.
Entities
The village has no custom mobs. Its spawn overrides place 4 to 8 witches as hostile monsters and 2 to 4 cats as creatures, within the village's pieces. Villagers are placed as vanilla villager entities in the cages and houses, and the witches are the reason the village is dangerous to approach.
Chest loot
Houses hold three kinds of loot table:
- Personal chest holds common brewing and redstone materials: sticks, glass bottles, glowstone dust, redstone, spider eyes, gunpowder and sugar, along with a set of potions.
- Attic chest holds emeralds, cobwebs, string, paintings, flower pots, books, leather and glass bottles.
- Barrel holds redstone, glowstone dust, spider eyes, sugar, brown and red mushrooms, fermented spider eyes, rabbit feet, pufferfish, glass bottles and splash potions.
The generated chest table above shows the exact odds for each item. The brewing items in the personal chest and barrel make the village a practical source of ingredients for Potions and Brewing.
Mechanics
Placement
The village is placed by a random-spread placement in the villagesandpillages:village_witch structure set, which is a member of the shared minecraft:villages set. Within that set it has weight 90 out of 1026. Its spacing is 65 chunks with a separation of 15 chunks, which are the in-game values after the pack's Sparse Structures scaling.
Biomes
The village can only generate in swamp-type biomes, set by the mod's has_structure biome tag. The tag adds the vanilla swamp and mangrove swamp biomes, plus the swamp biomes of other mods when they are loaded:
- Bayou, Bog, Floodplain, Marsh and Wetland from Biomes O' Plenty;
- Fen and Fungal Fen from Regions Unexplored;
- Willow Swamp from Hexerei.
The village is not placed in other biomes, so a player has to search swamps to find one. The Biomes overview lists the full set of swamp biomes in the pack.
Village terrain
The structure uses no terrain adaptation, so the village is placed without being reshaped to fit the surrounding ground. The start height is fixed at Y 64.
Hostile witches
The village's witches are hostile monsters. With 4 to 8 of them in one village, a player who enters the swamp to loot the chests should expect several fights in a single visit.
Changes to vanilla
Villages&Pillages changes the vanilla village set by adding a new village style to it. It does not change the vanilla villages, their loot or their trades. The vanilla swamp hut is disabled in Fear Nightfall, so the witch village and the other swamp structures are the places where witches and cats are found on the surface.
In Fear Nightfall
- Village set. The witch village is one of the styles in the merged
minecraft:villagesset, which the pack shares with vanilla, Luki's Grand Capitals, ChoiceTheorem's Overhauled Villages, Towns and Towers, Dungeons and Taverns and the Terralith fortified villages. The game picks among the village types valid for the local biome, so they never overlap on one spot. - Spacing. The pack's Sparse Structures scaling sets the village to a spacing of 65 chunks with a separation of 15 chunks, about twice the mod default. Villages of this type are therefore rarer than they would be at default spacing.
- Swamp structures. The witch village is one of several horror structures in the swamps. See Witch Huts for the other witch-hut structures that share the same biomes.
- Loot. The chest tables are used as written by the mod. The pack's chest mapping keeps the original loot and adds modded additions on top, so the witch village chests are not replaced by other tables.
