Willow Swamp is an overworld biome added by Hexerei. It takes the place of the vanilla swamp biome, and it carries its own mobs, mud patches and a large set of horror structures. In Fear Nightfall it is weighted as a horror biome, so it is one of the more dangerous places to be after dark.

The biome is registered as a TerraBlender region that takes the place of the vanilla minecraft:swamp biome. The replacement only happens when TerraBlender is loaded and the Hexerei config value willow_swamp_rarity is above 0 (default 2). Without TerraBlender, the biome is never used and the vanilla swamp remains.

Description

Willow Swamp has a temperature of 0.8 and a downfall of 0.9, and it rains when the weather is wet. Its foliage tint is #6a7039, its water tint is #617b64, its fog colour is #c0d8ff and its sky colour is #78a7ff. The water is a muted green-grey, and the fog and sky are pale blue.

Most of the biome's features come from the vanilla swamp feature set in its biome data. These include sugar cane and lily pads on the water, dead bushes, pumpkin patches, flower swamp patches, spore blossoms and rooted azalea trees. The underground ores are the same as in the standard overworld stone layer, with gravel and dirt patches.

Hexerei adds two features of its own to the biome:

  • Flowering Lily Pad: placed on the water, up to 4 attempts per chunk.
  • Mud Patch: a disk feature that only appears in Willow Swamp, with 62 attempts per chunk.

Hexerei's willow tree and swamp-flower features target the #c:is_swamp tag, which does not include Willow Swamp, so they are not confirmed to generate here. The lily pad and the mud patch are the only Hexerei features confirmed to reach the biome.

Generation

Willow Swamp is a rare overworld biome. It makes up about 0.14% of the land surface and about 0.01% of the cave layer at y = -30. Its Fear Nightfall weight is 6× the normal weight, the same multiplier given to the other horror biomes such as the Dark Forest, Ominous Woods, Spider Nest and Sleepy Hollows. Because it is a horror biome, it is one of the places where the pack's horror structures are placed closer together.

The pack made the biome more common. In the stock setup it was very rare (about 5 km to the nearest one in the test sample), and the pack raised its weight and then raised it again with the horror-biome weighting. It occurs in the temperate-to-cool, humid part of the map, which is where the pack's horror content is concentrated.

Features

The water is covered in lily pads and the ground is patched with mud. The main Hexerei features are the flowering lily pad and the mud patch described above. The vanilla swamp flora, such as sugar cane, dead bushes, pumpkin patches and spore blossoms, is spread across the rest of the biome.

The biome has 82 structures in the Fear Nightfall data. They include the Dark Coven from Hexerei's covens, the Infernal Pumpkin Patch from Born in Chaos, several Nova Structures ruins and shrines, vanilla swamp huts and a ruined portal variant. The list is too long to reproduce here, so the table below is the source of truth for what generates.

Mobs and structures

Willow Swamp has the vanilla swamp monsters (spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes, zombies, endermen and witches) along with a large number of Born in Chaos and other pack mobs. Born in Chaos's spawn modifiers are limited to the overworld, and Willow Swamp is one of the biomes where they still apply. The most common horror spawns are the Dread Hound, Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin, the Spirit Guide and the Pumpkin Dunce.

The passive and water life is mostly vanilla: sheep, pigs, chickens, cows and frogs on land, and a range of freshwater fish in the water. The Corpse Fish also spawns in the water. Bats and glow squid also spawn in the biome.

The spawn and structure tables below are generated from the game data:

Tips

  • Stay alert at night. The biome's monster spawn list is long and includes many of the pack's horror mobs. Arrive in daylight, carry light sources and secure a shelter before dusk.
  • Expect a mix of pack mobs and vanilla swamp mobs. A single weapon may not suit both, so check the spawn table before planning a long stay.
  • The Corpse Fish is one of the water spawns, so keep an eye on the water while crossing the swamp.
