Owl is a tameable flying mob added by Hexerei. Wild owls live in dark forests, and a player can tame one by feeding it salmon or cod. A tamed owl acts as a courier: it carries sealed Courier Packages and Courier Letters between Courier Depots and players, and it is the core of the mod's postal system. Owls are passive and do not attack. Their value is in delivery, not combat.
Spawning
Wild owls spawn naturally only in the Dark Forest biome. They use the creature category, with a spawn weight of 20 and groups of 2 to 5 animals. Owls count toward the same creature cap as other animals in the biome, and Crows compete with them in forests, so a crowded forest can limit how many owls appear. The mod's spawn placement is merged into the vanilla animal spawn check, which applies to owls standing on the ground.
The mod's data also associates the owl with the Owl Post Office structure, which is placed in Forest biomes. The structure holds the Courier Package and Courier Letter chests described under Drops.

Behavior
Owls have 12 health (6 hearts), a walking speed of 0.2, a flying speed of 0.6 and a follow range of 16 blocks. They are 0.5 by 0.65 blocks in size. Owls fly. Wild owls wander, look at nearby players, and are drawn toward salmon or cod held by a player (the temptation goal).
Taming. Each salmon or cod offered to a wild owl heals it by 4 health and lowers its distress by 25 and its anger by 15 to 19. Each feeding then has a 1 in 5 chance to tame the owl. Failed attempts leave the owl wild. Wild owls will also eat salmon or cod when they are below maximum health.
Anger. Any damage an owl takes raises its anger. The increase is the damage multiplied by 20, clamped between 10 and 30. The owl's emotion state changes with its anger and distress, but the owl does not retaliate: the AI registers no melee attack goal. Damage from a sweet berry bush is ignored entirely.
Tamed owls. A tamed owl follows its owner. The follow goal starts when the owner is more than 5 blocks away, moves at speed 1.25 and stops within 1 block. Tamed owls can be ordered to sit. They can ride a Broom, which is covered by the mod's broom rules. A tamed owl that is below maximum health accepts salmon and cod as healing food.
Breeding. An adult tamed owl enters love mode when its owner gives it a rabbit. The owl drops any item it was carrying, then holds the rabbit.
Item pickup. An owl with an empty carry slot will pick up dropped items that have been on the ground for more than 40 ticks.
Courier delivery. A sealed Courier Package or Courier Letter used on a tamed owl opens the Owl Send Screen. The sender chooses a player or a Courier Depot as the destination. Packages must be sealed before they can be delivered. The owl then flies to the destination. A failed delivery posts a "could not deliver" message to the sender. A delivery to a depot that already holds too many packages is refused with a "depot too full" message.
Chunk loading. During a delivery, a tamed owl force-loads the 3 by 3 block of chunks around its starting point and around its destination. The owl releases those chunks when its task ends or when it dies. The set of forced chunks is kept in saved data. The mod's source does not confirm that stale forced chunks are released after a server restart. Long delivery routes can therefore add to the server's chunk load while owls travel.
Drops
The mod defines no death loot table for the owl, so an owl drops nothing when killed.
Courier Packages and Courier Letters are found in the chests of the Owl Post Office structure. The chest loot table is hexerei:chests/courier_package. In Fear Nightfall, Hexerei chests are shared containers and are not generated per player when Lootr is installed, so the first player to open a chest takes its contents.
No item drops.

Owl Spawn Egg. Owls use the following postal items:
Courier Package: a container for items. It is sealed before it is delivered. Its recipe is listed above.
Courier Letter: a container for written messages. It is sealed before it is delivered.
Willow Courier Depot,
Mahogany Courier Depot and
Witch Hazel Courier Depot: one depot per wood type. Owls deliver to depots, and a depot can be chosen as the send destination.
Not used in any recipe.
Tips
- Feed a wild owl salmon or cod and keep feeding it. The 1 in 5 taming chance is per attempt, so a few tries is usually enough.
- Seal every package and letter before sending. An unsealed item cannot be delivered.
- Owls cannot attack, so they are not a threat to players or to the rest of the world.
- Keep Courier Depots from filling up. A depot that is full refuses further deliveries.
- If a server runs many owls on long routes, watch the chunk load. Each active delivery force-loads a 3 by 3 area at each end.
