Book of Shadows

Book of Shadows
Mod	Hexerei
Items	5

The Book of Shadows is the guidebook of the Hexerei mod. It is a non-stackable book that opens a page-turning screen on right-click and can also be placed on a Book of Shadows altar to be read in the world. It is a late-game item in the mod's progression, which is gated by recipes rather than experience or advancements. Its pages show drawings of the pack's items and their recipes, which makes it the mod's reference book.

Obtaining

The Book of Shadows cannot be found naturally. It does not appear in any loot table, mob drop, villager trade or wandering trader offer, so it must be crafted. The recipe is a shaped crafting grid made from two leather, a candle, a vanilla book and a sage seed. The candle slot accepts 18 alternative items besides the candles of the mod. The recipe grid is shown below.

The altar the book is placed on is a separate block, crafted from three mahogany slabs and four mahogany planks. It is not part of the book's recipe.

Usage

Holding and opening the book

Right-clicking the book in the air opens the Book of Shadows screen. The book has two sides. Pages are turned by dragging the mouse across the open book. Each page shows drawings of items, mobs and other content from the pack. Hovering over a drawn item shows its tooltip, followed by the name of the mod that adds it, in italic text.

While the mouse hovers over a drawn item, two default keys act on that item. The R key ("Show Recipe") displays the crafting or processing recipes that produce it, and the U key ("Show Uses") displays the recipes that consume it. Both keys are provided by the mod's book integration with the recipe viewer. Fear Nightfall changed default keybinds to resolve a clash involving the book recipe binding, as noted in the pack's changes.

Placing on an altar

The book can be placed on an altar. A placed book opens in the world instead of the hand-held screen. Right-clicking an altar that holds a book opens the book in place once its opening animation completes. Shift-right-clicking the altar removes the book and returns it to the player.

The Notebook and the Book of Colors use the same altar and the same in-world reading behaviour as the Book of Shadows. The book keeps its page and chapter position between uses. Each book receives a unique identifier the first time it is carried in an inventory, which keeps its saved state separate from other books.

Dyeing

The mod's in-game description says the cover takes the colour of the dye used when the book is crafted, and that dyeing the book again colours its corners. A separate dye recipe (book of shadows dye) handles the dyeing. The cover and corners are drawn in the chosen colours on both the hand-held screen and the altar.

The Notebook and the Book of Colors

The Notebook is a second book of the same kind. It is crafted from two leather, belladonna berries, a book and a feather. Its in-world and screen behaviour matches the Book of Shadows. The Book of Colors is a painting book. It is crafted with white dye, leather, belladonna berries, a book and a candle. It uses the same altar and screen, and a Book Canvas can be used on a painting inside it to copy a section of that painting. A Book Canvas is crafted from dried sage and a painting.

Items

The Book of Shadows is the mod's main book. The Notebook and Book of Colors share its screen and altar behaviour. The Book Canvas is a separate item that copies a section of a painting from the Book of Colors.
