The Pestle and Mortar is a grinding block added by Hexerei. It has five input slots and one output slot. Right-clicking it loads herbs, seeds and berries, and it grinds them into dyes and blends. It belongs to the mid-game part of Hexerei's progression, after the Mixing Cauldron and Herb Jar, and a player needs it to make black dye from belladonna and the seed mixture. The block can be fully automated with hoppers.

Obtaining

The Pestle and Mortar can only be obtained by crafting it in a Mixing Cauldron. The recipe takes eight ingredients in total: one nether quartz, two iron ingots, five stone and 250 mB of lava. The cauldron must be heated, which means a heat source block sits beneath it. See the recipe grid below.

It is not placed by world generation, and it does not appear in any loot table except its own block drop. Breaking it with a pickaxe returns the block itself. The block has a hardness of 2 and a blast resistance of 2, and it stacks to 64.

Usage

Inserting and removing items

• Right-clicking the block with an item in hand puts one item into the first empty input slot, provided the output slot is empty. Each of the five input slots holds exactly one item.
• Right-clicking with an empty hand removes the finished product from the output slot.
• Sneaking and right-clicking with an empty hand clears the output slot. It also clears the five input slots, but only while no grinding is in progress. Removed items are returned to the player's inventory.

Grinding

Grinding starts automatically once the five input slots match a grinding recipe and the output slot is empty. Each recipe has a fixed grinding time, after which the inputs are consumed and the result appears in the output slot. Inserting any item restarts the grinding timer at the recipe's full time. If the inputs stop matching a recipe, the grind is cancelled.

Recipe matching ignores slot order. The three grinding recipes that use five inputs are:

• Black Dye: five belladonna berries, giving 4 black dye. Grinding time is 300 ticks (15 seconds).
• Mindful Trance Blend: one belladonna flower, three belladonna berries and one sage, giving 1 Mindful Trance Blend. Grinding time is 300 ticks (15 seconds).
• Seed Mixture: one each of wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, beetroot seeds and sage seed, giving 1 seed mixture. Grinding time is 100 ticks (5 seconds).

While the block grinds, a grinding sound plays and item particles rise from the mortar.

Automation

The block can be fed and emptied with hoppers, as the in-game tooltip notes:

• The side and top faces accept items into the five input slots. A slot accepts an item only when it is empty.
• The bottom face only extracts the output slot. A hopper or other pipe placed beneath the block takes the finished product. Nothing can be pulled from the input slots.

The output slot holds up to 64 items. A new grind does not start while the output slot holds anything, so a hopper beneath the block is needed to empty it automatically. Without one, the block stops after the first batch until the output is removed by hand.

Tips

• Place a hopper beneath the block to collect output, so that the block can run batch after batch.
• Belladonna berries are the input for black dye and Mindful Trance Blend. See Belladonna.
• The seed mixture also needs a sage seed, so grow sage before making it.
