The Crow is a tameable flying companion mob added by Hexerei. Wild crows spawn in forests as a passive creature. A player who tames one gets a helper that can follow, guard, gather items and harvest crops. Crows are commanded with the Crow Flute, a command staff, and a crow can be fitted with the Crow Ankh Amulet, which lets it survive a fatal hit.

Spawning

Hexerei adds crows to the creature category of forest biomes through a biome modifier. Every forest biome in the list below gives crows a spawn weight of 20 and a group size of 2 to 5. Dark forests, mystic groves, birch forests, old growth forests and many other forest variants are included, so crows appear across most of the pack's forests.

Crows also generate inside the Nature Coven structure, where they sit in the chest loot described under Drops. Crows share the creature spawn cap with other mobs in each forest chunk, so a flock takes part of that cap.

Behavior

A crow has 12 health (6 hearts), a walking speed of 0.2, a flying speed of 0.6 and an attack damage of 3. It is a flying animal that is tamed by players. A tamed crow attacks any mob that hurts its owner, and it uses a melee attack when it does. Crows have no goal that targets players or other mobs on their own.

Taming

A wild crow is tamed by feeding it a Seed Mixture item. Each feeding has a 1 in 10 chance to tame the crow; otherwise the food is used up and the crow stays wild. Seed Mixture is also the crow's breeding food.

Commands

A tamed crow's behaviour is set with the Crow Flute, which selects crows and gives them a command:

  • Follow keeps the crow near its owner. If it gets too far away it teleports back to the owner, and if the owner's shoulder is empty it hops onto it.
  • Sit makes the crow fall down and sit where it is. If the crow has a perch it flies to the perch first.
  • Wander lets the crow roam freely.
  • Help puts the crow to work in one of three modes:
    • Gather collects dropped items within 24 blocks and deposits them into nearby Coffers and Herb Jars.
    • Harvest breaks crops and crop-like plants within 24 blocks. The target list is the crow's harvest whitelist, which the player sets with the Crow Whitelist overlay. If the whitelist is empty, the crow harvests every block in the Hexerei crow_harvestable tag: all crops, sweet berry bushes, cave vines and Hexerei herbs. Harvested drops are deposited into nearby Coffers and Herb Jars.
    • Pickpocket robs villagers in range using the hexerei:entities/crow_pickpocket_villager loot table. The crow waits 1800 ticks (the default crow_pickpocket_cooldown) between robberies.

Perches

A crow can be given a perch position with the Crow Flute. A sitting crow flies to its perch first, and it can deposit its carried items before it goes there.

Playing dead

A crow hurt by a living attacker may enter a playing dead state for 200 ticks (10 seconds). The state starts when a random roll of 0, 1 or 2 falls below the damage taken, or when the crow's health falls below half. It never starts on a hit that would kill the crow. While the state is active, the Crow Ankh Amulet (below) can react to a fatal hit.

Crow Ankh Amulet

The Crow Ankh Amulet is a trinket placed in the crow's hand slot or misc slot. When a fatal hit would kill the crow, the amulet breaks instead. The crow's health is set to 1, and it gains Regeneration II for 900 ticks, Absorption for 100 ticks and Fire Resistance for 800 ticks, and it enters the playing dead state. The effect is modelled on a totem of undying. The amulet is crafted in a Mixing Cauldron from a Crow Blank Amulet Trinket, a potion and several herbs (see Related items).

Drops

A crow does not drop items when it dies. Its gear comes from the Nature Coven structure, whose chest loot table hexerei:chests/nature_coven_crow holds the Crow Blank Amulet Trinket (4.3% per chest), the Crow Flute (3.3% per chest) and the Crow Ankh Amulet (0.3% per chest). Each of these gives one item per chest when it drops.

No item drops.

The Crow Flute is the command staff for crows. It is crafted from three Mahogany Planks and two White Dye, or from one of the 15 alternative dyes in the recipe list. The Crow Blank Amulet Trinket is the base for the Ankh Amulet. It is made in a heated Mixing Cauldron from a Mandrake Root, gold nuggets, gold ingots and lava. The Crow Ankh Amulet is made in a Mixing Cauldron from the blank trinket, a totem of undying, glow berries, dried herbs and a potion. The Crow Spawn Egg summons a crow.

Tips

  • Tame a crow early, while the forest is still quiet. A tame crow is a steady helper, and a few spare Seed Mixture items are worth carrying for the 1 in 10 taming roll.
  • A Harvest crow needs a whitelist on a mixed farm. Without one it will harvest every crop in its range.
  • A Pickpocket crow robs any villager in range each time its cooldown ends, so keep crows in Help mode away from villagers you want left alone.
  • Place a perch next to a Coffer or Herb Jar so that Gather and Harvest crows deposit items where you can reach them.
