The Sage is a herb added by Hexerei. It is the base ingredient for the mod's herb crafting: it is dried in a Herb Drying Rack, bundled, and ground with other herbs in a Pestle and Mortar. Dried Sage Bundles also power the Sage Burning Plate, a block that suppresses natural hostile spawns around it, which makes Sage one of the few herbs with a direct effect on the pack's horror gameplay.

Obtaining

Sage Seeds drop from grass. Each short or tall grass block has a 10% chance to drop a Sage Seed, unless it is broken with shears or a tool with Silk Touch. This is a global loot modifier that adds to vanilla grass drops, so it applies throughout the world.

Sage Seeds plant the Sage Crop, a crop block with eight growth stages (age 0 to 7). Sage Crops do not generate naturally. A crop at age 7 drops Sage and Sage Seeds, with Fortune increasing the yield of both. An immature crop drops a single Sage Seed. Crows set to the Help mode with the Harvest task can harvest Sage Crops, because the crop is in the #minecraft:crops tag that the default crow harvest list uses. Harvested items are deposited into nearby Coffers and Herb Jars.

Sage is also found in Hexerei's coven chests, which are placed closer together in the pack than in vanilla Hexerei. The Dark Coven basic chests and Nature Coven herb chests hold Sage, and the Nature Coven crow chests hold Sage Seeds. The Owl Post Office courier chests hold Dried Sage Bundles. The loot table below lists the chance and average count for each chest.

Usage

Sage is in the hexerei:herbs item tag, so it works in every recipe that accepts herbs. It has a 30% compost chance and stacks to 64.

Drying

Sage placed in an Herb Drying Rack becomes Dried Sage after 2000 ticks (100 seconds). A Sage Bundle takes 4000 ticks (200 seconds) to dry into a Dried Sage Bundle. Dried Sage is an ingredient in some of the mod's crafting recipes, such as the Canvas recipe, which uses four Dried Sage and a Painting.

Sage Bundles

Eight Sage placed around a String in a crafting grid make a Sage Bundle. A Sage Bundle must be dried into a Dried Sage Bundle before it can be used. Dried Sage Bundles have a durability of 3600 and do not stack. They are the only item the Sage Burning Plate accepts.

Sage Burning Plate

The Sage Burning Plate is made in a Mixing Cauldron from eight Gold Ingots and 250 mB of lava, with the cauldron heated. It holds one Dried Sage Bundle. Lighting the plate requires a flint and steel with a bundle on the plate.

While the plate is lit, it vetoes natural spawns of hostile monsters (the monster mob category) within spawn_disable_range blocks, which is 48 by default. A value of 0 disables the effect. The veto applies only to natural spawns, so spawners, commands and other mods are not affected.

A lit bundle loses one durability point every 20 ticks (one second). A full Dried Sage Bundle therefore burns for 3600 seconds, or one hour of game time, before it is removed. Removing the bundle with a crouched right click extinguishes the plate. Right-clicking the plate with an empty hand without crouching cycles through four particle modes, which change only the visual effect.

Mindful Trance Blend

A Pestle and Mortar grinds 1 Belladonna Flowers, 3 Belladonna Berries and 1 Sage into one Mindful Trance Blend in 300 ticks (15 seconds). The blend is a candle add-in.
