The Crystal Ball and Dowsing Rod are two utility items added by Hexerei. The Crystal Ball is a light-emitting decorative block that reports whether it is day or night and, at night, the current phase of the moon. The Dowsing Rod is a hand-held compass-like tool that points toward the nearest swamp or jungle biome. The rod can locate swamp biomes, where the pack's Covens and witch huts are named to generate.
Obtaining
Both items are crafted.
Crafting
The Crystal Ball is made in a Mixing Cauldron rather than at a crafting table. Its recipe needs one diamond, six glass, one stone block and 250 mB of lava, and it must be heated. The cauldron is heated by the block directly below it, which must be tagged as a heat source and lit if it can be lit. The recipe is shown below.
The Dowsing Rod is a shaped crafting recipe: five sticks surround a single leaves block in the centre of the grid. The centre slot accepts any block in the minecraft:leaves tag, so any leaves block works.

Crystal Ball
The Crystal Ball is a block with a hardness of 2, a blast resistance of 2 and a light level of 9. It is mined with a pickaxe, drops itself when broken and survives explosions. It can be waterlogged, stacks to 64, and must sit on a block with a solid top face. When placed it faces the direction of the player placing it.
Right-clicking the ball shows a message in the action bar:
- Daytime is shown while the time of day is between 0 and 12299 ticks, or between 23851 and 23999 ticks.
- Moon Phase: followed by the phase name is shown from 12300 to 23850 ticks, which is the night window. The phase is read from the world's moon phase, in the standard eight-stage cycle: Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, Waning Crescent, New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter and Waxing Gibbous.
The ball responds to nearby players. When a player stands within 4 blocks, the orb rises and the ball turns to follow the player's eye position, and a moon image fades in around it. The nearest-player check runs every 20 ticks. When no player is within range, the orb sinks and the moon image fades out.
Each right-click adds to the spin speed of the central orb, up to a cap of 100. A click at the cap shows the message "Nyooooom" instead of the moon phase.
Dowsing Rod
The Dowsing Rod stacks to 64 and has a single right-click behaviour that depends on whether the player is crouching. Its tooltip describes both modes.
- Right-click searches for the nearest biome of the selected type and stores the position it finds. The search starts at the player's current position and covers a horizontal radius of 6400 blocks. It checks vertically in steps of 32 blocks across a range of 64. The message "Now locating a new swamp position." or "Now locating a new jungle position." is shown.
- Crouch and right-click switches between swamp and jungle mode and runs a search immediately. The rod has a cooldown of 20 ticks (one second) after switching. The message "Now locating a swamp." or "Now locating a jungle." is shown.
- Holding the rod with no stored position also starts a search automatically each tick, so a rod that has not yet found a target will try on its own.
The swamp search uses the #c:is_swamp biome tag. The jungle search uses #minecraft:is_jungle. The rod searches biomes, not structures, so a located swamp does not guarantee that a coven or witch hut is nearby. The leaves on the rod change colour depending on whether the player is facing a swamp, and healthy leaves indicate the rod is pointing the right way, according to the tooltip.
The stored position and the current mode are kept on the item class itself rather than on each item stack. Every Dowsing Rod in a game therefore shares one target and one mode, and using a rod in one hand changes what the other rods point to.
Each search runs on the server. The pack's mod profile for Hexerei notes that the 6400-block radius makes a rod search a likely server hot spot, though this cost has not been measured in play.
