The Mandrake is a group of herb items and a plant block added by Hexerei. The Mandrake Plant grows in swamp biomes and yields two harvest items, the Mandrake Root and the Mandrake Flowers. The flowers can also be dried into Dried Mandrake Flowers. Mandrake is an input of several Mixing Cauldron recipes, including those for the wood Brooms and the broom brushes, so it is one of the herbs players need in quantity.

Mandrake is also part of Hexerei's horror-leaning structures. The Mandrake Root, Mandrake Flowers and Dried Mandrake Flowers appear in the herb chests of the Covens and Owl Post Office structures. The pack places Hexerei covens and huts closer together than vanilla, so these herb chests are more common than in a standard install.

Obtaining

The Mandrake Plant is the source of every other Mandrake item. The root and flowers come from harvesting the plant, and the flowers can be dried. The plant can also be found in the world and in chests.

Natural generation

The Mandrake Plant is one of four plants in the hexerei:swamp_flowers feature, alongside Belladonna, Mugwort and Yellow Dock. The feature is placed three times per chunk in biomes tagged #c:is_swamp. Each placement attempt picks one of the four plants at random, so each attempt has a one-in-four chance of a Mandrake Plant before the placement conditions (heightmap and biome checks) are applied. Naturally generated plants start at growth stage 0, 1 or 2, so they must grow to stage 3 before they yield anything.

Harvesting the plant

The Mandrake Plant has four growth stages (0 to 3). Breaking it takes no particular tool and drops the plant itself, because its hardness is 0. Right-clicking a plant at stage 3 gives one Mandrake Root and a 50% chance of one Mandrake Flowers, then resets the plant to stage 0.

Right-clicking a plant at stage 2 gives no items but still resets it to stage 0, so the plant should be left until it reaches stage 3.

A plant grows one stage on a random tick when the light level at the block above it is 9 or higher, with a 1 in 5 chance per random tick. Bone Meal advances a plant by one stage, up to stage 3. A Mandrake Plant can also be placed in a flower pot, which creates a Potted Mandrake Plant block.

The herb chest loot table is the source of Mandrake items in structures. Hexerei chests are shared rather than per-player under Lootr, so the herbs in them are first come, first served.

Usage

Mandrake items are used in broom, broom brush and satchel recipes, and the plant itself is a Mixing Cauldron input.

Brooms and broom brushes

Mandrake Root is one of the Mixing Cauldron inputs for the Mahogany, Willow and Witch Hazel brooms, each of which is described on the Brooms page. Mandrake Root and Mandrake Flowers are both inputs of the Wet Enhanced Broom Brush and the Wet Moon Dust Brush recipes. The enhanced brush and the Moon Dust Brush each have 200 durability by default, and the Moon Dust Brush adds 1.0 speed during a time-of-day window when the moon is full, otherwise 0.25.

Dried flowers

A Herb Drying Rack turns one Mandrake Flowers into one Dried Mandrake Flowers in 2000 ticks, which is 100 seconds. Dried Mandrake Flowers are an input of the Replacer Satchel recipe, which is made in a Mixing Cauldron from a Medium satchel, Dried Mandrake Flowers and other herbs and potion fluid. The Replacer Satchel is the only recipe that uses the dried form.

Crow harvesting

The crow_harvestable tag, which sets the default targets for Crow companions in Harvest mode, includes Hexerei herbs. The Mandrake Plant carries the Hexerei herbs tag, so it is part of that default set unless a crow's own harvest whitelist is set.

Compost

The Mandrake Plant has a 100% compost chance, while the root, flowers and dried flowers each have a 30% chance.
