The Mixing Cauldron is a block added by Hexerei that serves as the pack's central crafting station for witchcraft items. It holds up to 2000 mB of fluid, accepts items dropped into it or placed through its interface, and turns those inputs into new items and fluids over a timed craft. Most of Hexerei's early-game progression runs through it, including the Willow and Mahogany woods, Drying Racks, Herb Jars and Coffers, and later the Brooms, Satchels and Witch Armor.
Obtaining
The Mixing Cauldron is not found in natural terrain or in loot chests. It must be crafted.
Crafting
The recipe takes a vanilla cauldron, 5 iron ingots and 2 torches. The block requires a pickaxe to mine, has a hardness of 3, and emits light level 12.
Usage
The Mixing Cauldron has one item output slot and eight input slots, plus a ninth slot that accepts a Blood Sigil. It does not work like a vanilla cauldron, and it is not a furnace. Recipes are matched by the combination of items in the input slots, the fluid in the tank, and the conditions the recipe requires.
Fluid storage
- The tank holds 2000 mB of one fluid at a time. Mixing a different fluid into the tank does not succeed.
- Fluids enter by using items on the block. Filling and emptying use the cauldron filling and emptying recipes. Water, lava, tallow, blood and quicksilver can all be held. A glass bottle of a potion adds 250 mB of potion fluid, and a potion fluid can be bottled back out in the same amount.
- Fluid items such as buckets are accepted, and a dripping stalactite adds 100 mB of its fluid per drip until the tank is full.
- The block exposes an item handler and a fluid handler to pipes and other mods' machines.
Item input
- An item entity that falls into the block is captured into the first empty input slot, one item per entity. Item stacks are split one at a time.
- Items can also be placed into the input slots by hand.
Crafting
- A recipe starts when its items, fluid, output space and any heat or moon requirement are all met.
- Each tick a recipe is in progress, the internal craft counter rises by 2. When it is idle, the counter falls by 1. A craft completes when the counter reaches 100 ticks, so a fresh craft takes about 5 seconds of continuous progress.
- On completion the output item goes into the output slot, the tank is drained, and any leftover fluid is refilled as the recipe's fluid output. Fluid is only consumed from the tank when the recipe is completed, not when it starts.
- Some recipes require heat. The block directly beneath the cauldron must be a heat source and, if it has a
litstate, must be lit. The heat source tag includes lava, magma blocks, lava cauldrons, campfires, fire and, when Farmer's Delight is loaded, its heat sources. - At least one recipe requires a full moon. Its moon condition is checked against the current phase.
Blood Sigil
- A Blood Sigil placed in the ninth slot turns the block into a trap. An entity whose bounding box overlaps the lower part of the block (a box 3 to 6 pixels high, 2 to 14 pixels across) takes 3 points of magic damage, and the cauldron gains 250 mB of blood fluid.
- The effect has a cooldown of 6 ticks, so a standing entity is not damaged every tick.
- Item entities do not trigger the sigil. They are handled by the item capture code instead.
Mixing recipes
- The mod adds 36 Mixing Cauldron recipes, the main source of Hexerei's witchcraft items. Recipes use the input slots and a fluid, for example a recipe that uses lava and redstone with polished blackstone to make a Blood Sigil. Thirteen recipes require heat.
- Hexerei also has separate fluid mixing recipes, which the cauldron checks alongside its own. See Hexerei Witchcraft for the complete system.
