Hexerei is a witch-themed magic, exploration and storage mod. It adds three wood families (Willow, Mahogany and Witch Hazel), a herb and candle alchemy system built around the Mixing Cauldron, two tameable companion mobs, flying brooms, a courier postal network, and a set of generated witch structures. In Fear Nightfall it supplies much of the pack's witch and swamp content, and its structures are part of the horror set that spawns more densely in forests and swamps.
Overview
Hexerei is a content add-on, not a total overhaul. Its main pillars are:
- Wood and building: three full wood sets, each with polished and waxed variants, plus infused fabric and selenite stone blocks.
- Alchemy: herbs grown in the world are dried on Herb Drying Racks, ground with a Pestle and Mortar, and combined in the Mixing Cauldron. Candles take wax, dye and herb add-ins to produce area effects.
- Storage: Coffers, Herb Jars and satchels.
- Companions and travel: Crows that gather and harvest, Owls that carry packages, and brooms that can be ridden through the air.
- Worldgen: a willow swamp biome, several trees, a selenite geode, and five structures.
Hexerei adds no hostile mobs and no bosses. Its horror role in the pack comes from the witch-themed structures, the witch armour, and the Sage Burning Plate, which suppresses hostile spawns near it.
Content
Woods and building blocks
Each of the three woods, Willow, Mahogany and Witch Hazel Wood, has logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, hanging signs, chests, boats and leaves. Willow also has vines, and the set includes window panes and windows in waxed variants. The mod's wood blocks are listed on Hexerei Decorative Wood Blocks. Selenite, a crystal stone, forms a block, a budding variant and clusters, and it appears in the Selenite geode. Infused Fabric is a cloth block used for carpets and witch armour.
Herbs and plants
The alchemy herbs are Sage, Belladonna, Mandrake, Mugwort and Yellow Dock. Sage grows as a crop and its seeds also drop from grass. Belladonna, Mandrake, Mugwort and Yellow Dock are bushes or plants that can be potted. Dried herbs are ingredients for candles and the cauldron. Other small items are listed on Hexerei Miscellaneous.
Stations
- Mixing Cauldron: the main crafting hub. It holds fluids (water, lava, tallow, blood, quicksilver and potion) and runs fluid-mixing recipes.
- Herb Drying Rack: dries herbs, and turns rotten flesh into leather.
- Candle Dipper: dips wicks into wax and dyes to make candles.
- Pestle and Mortar (Hexerei): grinds herbs into powders and dyes.
- Waxing Kit: waxes Hexerei blocks.
- Woodcutter (Hexerei): a woodcutter with recipes for each Hexerei wood, and for woods from other mods.
Storage
Coffers hold items, with a blacklist that blocks shulker boxes by default. Herb Jars hold herbs only. Satchels are portable storage, with Small, Medium, Large, Ender and Replacer variants.
Companions and transport
- Crow: a tameable flying helper that gathers dropped items, harvests crops and can rob villagers.
- Owl: a tameable flying courier that carries packages and letters between Courier Depots and players.
- Brooms: flying vehicles in Willow, Mahogany and Witch Hazel, with seats, chains, tips, brushes and a whistle that recalls a bound broom.
- Crystal Ball and Dowsing Rod: the dowsing rod points toward the nearest swamp or jungle.
Armour and magic items
- Witch Armor: a three-piece set of hat, robe and boots made from infused fabric, with a set bonus described under Mechanics.
- Book of Shadows: a book in the mod's book system. A Book of Shadows Altar block is also added.
- Hexerei Witchcraft: the mod's magic systems, covering the candles, cauldron and herbs described below.
Structures
Hexerei generates five structures, listed on Covens, Hexerei Witch Hut, Baba Yaga's Hut and Owl Post Office. The Dark Coven and Witch Hut sit in swamps, and the Nature Coven, Owl Post Office and Baba Yaga's Hut sit in forests. Baba Yaga's Hut is very rare.
Biome
Willow Swamp is a custom overworld biome that replaces vanilla swamps. Its climate is warm and wet (temperature 0.8, downfall 0.9, with rain). Mud patches and flowering lily pads generate in it.
Mechanics
Crows
A crow is tamed and then given one of four commands: Follow, Sit, Wander or Help. Help has three modes:
- Gather picks up dropped items within 24 blocks.
- Harvest breaks crops and crop-like plants within 24 blocks. The target set is a whitelist that the player chooses with the Crow Whitelist overlay, or, if the whitelist is empty, the
crow_harvestabletag. That tag covers all crops, sweet berry bushes, cave vines and the Hexerei herbs. Harvested items go into nearby Coffers and Herb Jars. - Pickpocket robs villagers. Its cooldown is 1800 ticks by default.
A crow has 12 health and three inventory slots: hand, hat and misc. The Crow Ankh Amulet, when held in the hand or misc slot, prevents a lethal hit. The crow survives at 1 health with Regeneration II for 900 ticks, Absorption for 100 ticks and Fire Resistance for 800 ticks, and then plays dead. Crows can also perch on blocks marked with the Crow Flute.
Owls and the courier network
Owls deliver packages and letters between Courier Depots and players. The Owl Send Screen selects the destination, either a player or a depot. A depot that is full stops the owl with a "depot too full" message. While an owl is travelling, it force-loads the 3×3 chunks around its start and destination. Those chunks are released when the owl's task ends or the owl dies. The owl's taming food is salmon and cod.
Brooms
A broom's speed comes from its wood type, then from its brushes and tips. The Thruster Brush adds 1.5 speed. The Moon Dust Brush adds 1.0 between time-of-day 0.25 and 0.75 when the moon is full, and 0.25 otherwise. Default durability values from the config are: Broom Brush 100, Enhanced Broom Brush 200, Moon Dust Brush 200, Thruster Brush 400, Waterproof Tip 800 and Netherite Tip 200. Brooms can carry owls, crows and cats.
Witch Armor set bonus
- Two or more pieces: witches stop targeting the wearer, and magic damage taken by the wearer is halved. The rule applies to any damage of the
magictype, not only witch attacks. - Three pieces: magic damage the wearer deals is multiplied by 1.25, and the wearer heals 15% of the base damage.
The armour stats are: helmet 3, chest 8 and boots 3 defence, with toughness 0. There are no leggings.
Candles
A lit candle with an effect runs an 8-second cycle. Potion effects apply to every living entity in a box about 5 blocks around the candle, extending roughly 20 blocks up. The base duration is 10 seconds, scaled by the candle's duration multiplier. Instant effects last 1 tick. Two candle effects are not potions:
- Sunshine clears the weather for the whole level, not just nearby. Its recipe is disabled in this pack (see below).
- Growth bonemeals up to 3 crops near the candle each cycle.
Wax and herb add-ins set the melting, radius, amplifier and cooldown multipliers.
Sage Burning Plate
A lit Sage Burning Plate prevents natural hostile spawns within 48 blocks. The range is set by spawn_disable_range in the config, and 0 turns the feature off.
Mixing Cauldron and fluids
The Mixing Cauldron stores fluids and turns them into other items through 36 recipes. Cauldron filling and emptying recipes move water, lava, tallow and blood in and out of bottles.
Dowsing Rod
The rod searches the world for the nearest swamp or jungle biome. Each use runs a server-side search with a 6400-block horizontal radius.
Changes to vanilla
- Overworld swamps: vanilla swamp is replaced by Willow Swamp through TerraBlender, when TerraBlender is installed.
- Crows and owls: Crows join forest creature spawns, with weight 20 and groups of 2 to 5. Owls join dark forest spawns the same way.
- Trees: Mahogany grows in jungles, Witch Hazel grows in birch forests, and Willow grows in swamps.
- Leather: rotten flesh can be dried into leather on a Drying Rack, which takes 2000 ticks.
- Loot: Animal Fat drops from cows, pigs and sheep with a 45% chance. Sage Seed drops from grass with a 10% chance, unless the tool has Silk Touch or is shears.
- Tags: vanilla candles count as Hexerei candles and tallow ingredients. Blood and tallow count as water for any check that uses the
minecraft:watertag. Quicksilver counts as lava. Vanilla crops are harvestable by crows. - Villagers: crows can rob villagers using a pickpocket loot table.
- Woodcutter: at server start, the mod generates woodcutter recipes from every plank, log, chest, sign, boat, stair and slab the game knows about, including those from other mods.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack changes Hexerei in several places.
- Structures: the Hexerei covens and huts are among the horror structures placed about 30% closer together. Where they share a structure set with other mods' structures, they get 6× weight, so the set's horror share rises.
- Biomes: Willow Swamp is one of the horror biomes at 6× weight, alongside the dark forest and other horror biomes. Horror biomes make up about 25% of land in temperate-to-cool humid forests, taigas and swamps.
- Sunshine candle: the Sunshine candle permanently cleared the weather, so its recipe is disabled.
- Recipe book: Hexerei's recipe-book root advancement pointed to itself and hid every recipe advancement. The pack restores the vanilla root.
- Willow vines: the vines used a Forge-only loot condition, which the pack replaced with the NeoForge one.
- Keybinds: the Hexerei book recipe is bound to Y, to avoid a clash with other mods.
- Shared containers: Hexerei chests are not made per-player by Lootr. They are shared and first come first served, so a player who opens one first takes its loot.
- Witch huts: Hexerei's huts are one of the witch-hut types in the pack's shared witch-hut set, with vanilla, Luki's, YUNG's, Terralith and Dungeons & Taverns mangrove huts.
