Seasonal Forest is an overworld biome added by Biomes O' Plenty. It is a temperate, wet forest with orange-tinted grass and golden foliage, and its trees are mostly maples in red, yellow and orange. It has one of the larger hostile mob tables in the pack, including several Born in Chaos horror mobs, so it is worth approaching with care at night. Its trees and passive animals also make it a useful place to gather wood and food.

Description

The biome has a humid, mild climate, with a temperature of 0.4 and a downfall of 0.8, and it rains here. Its grass is coloured #dd9a4a, which gives it an orange cast, and its foliage is #d1b24a, a golden yellow. Water is #3f76e4, the fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the sky is a light blue (#7ca4ff).

Most of the ground cover comes from maple leaf piles and grass patches. Red maple leaf piles are placed two per chunk, and orange and yellow maple leaf piles are added as separate features. Flowers, toadstools, reeds, short grass and pumpkin patches also grow on the surface. Wild carrots and wild onions from Farmer's Delight and wild flax from Supplementaries can be found here. Springs of water and lava are placed on the surface as well.

Generation

Seasonal Forest covers 0.60% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall and 0.08% of the cave layer at y = −30. The pack's custom biome source shares land between every biome that its original mod allows at a given climate, and same-type biomes are placed next to each other, so this biome tends to border other forests rather than deserts or peaks.

The biome is in the vanilla stronghold_biased_to tag, which makes strongholds more likely to generate near it. It is also in the Tough As Nails cold_biomes tag, so that mod's cold-related effects apply here.

The pack does not weight Seasonal Forest at the 6× horror weight that some other biomes receive. Horror structures in general are placed about 30% closer together in Fear Nightfall, and this applies to the horror structures that generate here.

Features

Trees are the most visible feature. The tree feature makes about 10 attempts per chunk, with an 11th attempt in about 10% of chunks. Each attempt picks one of the following trees:

  • Yellow maple tree (30%)
  • Small red maple tree (20%)
  • Big red, big yellow and big orange maple trees (10% each)
  • Plain oak (5%) and fancy oak (2.5%)
  • Orange maple tree, used for the remaining share (about 12.5%)

Trees are placed only on ground that has no water above it. The maple wood set is described on the Maple Wood page.

The ore layout is the standard overworld set (coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis, diamond, and the vanilla stone-variant veins). The pack also adds ore placements from Born in Chaos, Butchery and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks to this biome.

Mobs and structures

The hostile mob table has many entries. Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies have the highest weights, and the table includes horror mobs from Born in Chaos such as Dread Hound, Pumpkin Dunce, Spirit Guide, Restless Spirit and Sir Pumpkinhead. Necromancer mobs, the Slime Golem and the Honey Golem from Golem Overhaul also spawn here.

Passive creatures include crows, sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, foxes, wolves and ferrets. Wolves in this biome use the "woods" wolf variant. Small ambient animals such as leaf insects, ladybugs, snails and stag beetles also appear. In water, the biome has several fish types from Biomes O' Plenty and glow squid in underground water.

The biome can generate about 206 structures. Among the horror ones are the Dark Tower and the Infernal Pumpkin Patch, both from Born in Chaos. The generated tables below list the structures, mobs and loot for this biome.

Tips

  • Visit in daylight when you can. The hostile mob table is long, and a night visit without light means fighting several mob types at once.
  • Bring a sword and armour before entering the forest at night, since horror mobs such as Dread Hounds and Necromancers can appear alongside ordinary zombies and skeletons.
  • Gather wood and food here during the day. The maple trees supply logs for the Biomes O' Plenty wood sets, and cows, pigs, sheep and chickens are an easy source of meat.
  • Approach the Dark Tower and the Infernal Pumpkin Patch with care, especially at night.
