The Ferret is a tameable passive mob added by Critters and Companions. It is a small, long-bodied animal with 16 health (8 hearts) that spawns in groups in many overworld biomes, including forests, plains and highlands. Wild ferrets never attack players. They hunt chickens and rabbits, and they can be tamed to dig for random items in dirt, sand and gravel. Fear Nightfall does not change the mob itself; its spawns follow the mod's default biome weights, which the pack's biome changes apply to like any other overworld mob.

Spawning

Ferrets spawn in groups of 2 to 3 as Creature-category mobs. The mod adds them to biomes through biome modifications, so they appear in the wild and not in any generated structure. The mod's default weights are 3 in forest biomes and 4 in plains biomes. The table below lists every biome where a ferret can spawn, with its weight and group size.

A ferret can be created with a Ferret Spawn Egg, which stacks to 64.

Spawner-spawned groups have an extra chance to include young ferrets. When a group is created by a spawner block, there is a 20% chance that 1 to 3 baby ferrets are added to it. Natural spawns do not add babies.

Behavior

A wild ferret wanders, looks around and flees from any entity that last hurt it. Its goals, in priority order, are:

  • Panic: when hurt, it runs at 1.5 times its normal speed.
  • Flee: when an entity other than its owner has hurt it, it runs away from that entity within 8 blocks.
  • Hunting: a wild ferret targets wild chickens and rabbits and attacks them in melee for 3 damage. It does not target tamed animals and does not target players.
  • Breeding and following: it breeds when fed a raw chicken, and its young follow their parent. A tamed ferret follows its owner.
  • Sitting and sleeping: a tamed ferret can be ordered to sit and can lie down on a bed.

Its movement speed is 0.34 and its follow range is 16 blocks. It has no armor and no knockback resistance. Its body is 0.8 blocks wide and 0.7 blocks tall.

Taming

A wild ferret is tamed by offering it a raw rabbit. Each offer has a 1 in 10 chance to tame it, and the raw rabbit is used up whether or not the attempt succeeds.

Feeding and commands

A tamed ferret that is damaged can be fed a raw chicken, which restores 2 health (1 heart). Right-clicking a tamed ferret with an item it does not eat toggles whether it sits. Right-clicking it with a dye changes the color of its collar.

Digging

A tamed ferret digs when its owner offers it a raw rabbit while the ferret is standing on dirt, sand or gravel. The dig takes 35 ticks (about 1.75 seconds) and then drops its items and experience at the ferret's position. Each dig starts a cooldown of 6000 ticks (5 minutes) before the ferret can dig again. A ferret cannot dig while it is a baby, while it is sitting, or while it is asleep.

Each dig rolls one of three loot tables, with these chances:

Result Chance Items
Trash 80% Bone, rotten flesh, string, sweet berries, gold nugget, flint
Common 18% Rabbit hide, experience bottle, golden apple, name tag
Treasure 2% Totem of undying

Each dig also drops 1 to 5 experience points.

Drops

A ferret has no death drop of its own. Its items come from digging, as described in the Digging section above.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Tame a ferret before trying to dig with it. Only the owner can start a dig.
  • The treasure result is rare at 2%, so expect many digs for each totem of undying.
  • A dig on any other block than dirt, sand or gravel is refused, so check the ground under the ferret first.
  • Because a tamed ferret can be fed raw chicken to heal, keep a stack of raw chicken for a damaged pet.
