The Arid Highlands is a dry, elevated overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a hot, rainless plateau of stone cliffs, sparse acacia trees and scrub. Its monster list is one of the longest among the pack's land biomes, so a player who crosses it at night meets a wide mix of Fear Nightfall's hostile mobs.
Description
The biome sits on raised terrain. Its surface is broken up by stone cliff formations, placed by the terralith:highlands/arid/cliff feature, so the ground rises and drops in short steps rather than lying flat. Trees are sparse acacia trees with a forking trunk and a small acacia canopy. Low bushes, dead bushes and savanna grass are scattered between them, along with tall grass, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, brown and red mushrooms and glow lichen.
The biome has no precipitation. Its downfall is 0.1 and its temperature is 1.6, so the sky stays dry. The fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff), the sky is #75aaff and the water is #3f76e4. Water appears only as springs, which generate spring water and spring lava. Underground and surface lava lakes also appear here.
Generation
The Arid Highlands is a land biome in Terralith's dry highland climate. In Fear Nightfall it covers 0.86% of the land surface, which makes it one of the less common Terralith biomes in the pack. It is not among the biomes weighted 6× by the pack's biome table, so it is not part of the horror concentration described in Horror and Spooky Content.
The biome carries savanna, plains and sparse-vegetation tags, so it can border savanna biomes such as Savanna Slopes and Savanna Badlands. Ashen Savanna, which the pack weights 6×, is a savanna biome of the same type.
Features
Ore generation uses the vanilla overworld set: coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, and diamond in its normal, medium, large and buried forms. The biome also receives these features from other mods:
- Mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. See Mithril.
- Black Argillite, which Born in Chaos generates in stone. See Black Argillite.
- Infected Diamond Ore and Infected Deepslate Diamond Ore from Born in Chaos. These generate when the
generationofInfectedDiamondsgamerule is on, which is its default. - Sulfur ore from Butchery, in deepslate and in a regeneration patch.
Other natural features include amethyst geodes, two monster rooms (minecraft:monster_room and minecraft:monster_room_deep), and underground and surface lava lakes. Monster rooms are dungeon chambers with spawners, so a player who digs into the biome can meet a spawner underground.
Mobs and structures
The monster list is the largest part of the spawn table. Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies carry the top weights, and the list continues with horror mobs from Born in Chaos, Graveyard, Mutant Monsters and Iron's Spells, such as Necromancer, Dread Hound, Krampus, Nightmare, Slime Golem and the mutant variants. Passive creatures are sheep, pigs, chickens and cows, with rarer wolves, ferrets, armadillos, horses and donkeys. Water spawns are fish and glow squid.
Structures that can generate here include the Illager Hideout and Manor, the Catacombs, the Evoker Fort, the Clown Caravan and the Firewell from Born in Chaos. Savanna villages from Chaos Overhaul Village can also generate here. Villages are the safest places in the biome at night, because villagers and iron golems defend them.

Tips
- Cross the biome in daylight if you can. The open, rainless terrain gives mobs a long line of sight, and the monster list means several kinds can spawn in the same stretch of dark ground.
- The stone cliffs break up the ground, so mobs must path around them to reach you. Fighting at the edge of a cliff limits how many can reach you at once.
- Check the monster rooms before you dig. Their spawners are the main hazard underground, and their chests are a source of loot.
- Pumpkin patches are a source of pumpkins for crafting and food.
- Infected diamond ore is a Born in Chaos feature found in the stone layers. Mine it with iron-tier tools or better, and watch for mobs while you dig.
