The Frostfire Caves are an underground biome added by Terralith. It is a cave biome of the deep underground, with black sky and fog, blue ice and deepslate floors, and soul fire burning on the ground. In Fear Nightfall it is a horror biome: it is weighted six times higher than ordinary biomes, and it is one of the cave biomes that the pack allows to spread into neighbouring caves. Its stray skeletons, undead, and spirits make it one of the most dangerous places to explore underground.

Description

The Frostfire Caves have no visible sky and no fog. The fog and sky colours are both black, so the cave is lit only by the player's light sources and by the soul fire patches on the floor. The water colour is a deep blue (#1b46d0).

The floor is mostly deepslate mixed with blue ice. Soul fire is scattered over the floor in small patches of two to five blocks in radius, and hanging growths of deepslate and blue ice grow from the ceiling. Tall, thick pillars of large dripstone rise from the floor and descend from the ceiling, and some of them reach over 13 blocks in height. Sculk patches grow in the cave. Pumpkins, sugar cane, tall grass, glow lichen, and mushrooms also grow on the floor, and plains-style trees appear occasionally.

The biome plays the standard cave ambient sound about every five minutes, and rare blue dust particles drift through the air.

Generation

The biome generates in the cave layer of the overworld. In Fear Nightfall its share of the cave layer at y = -30 is 0.40%, which is a small share compared with the more common cave biomes. Its climate is temperature 0.8 and downfall 0.4, with rain as its precipitation. The biome has a six times horror weight in the pack. The pack's changes raised horror caves to about 30% of the cave layer. Frostfire Caves, along with Infested Caves and Spider Nest, now also spread into neighbouring cave areas, which means they can appear in caves that were not originally Frostfire. Lush caves now make up only 4 to 5% of the cave layer, down from 12 to 15%.

Features

The biome's terrain features are generated from y = 0 to y = 30. The main unique features are:

  • Frostfire patches: blue ice and deepslate floor patches with soul fire on top. Soul fire is placed in about 5% of these patches.
  • Frostfire ceiling: hanging growths of deepslate and blue ice. Blue ice columns hang from the ceiling in about 40% of the growths, each one to five blocks long.
  • Pillars: large dripstone pillars, including a huge variant that has a radius of 5 to 13 blocks.
  • Sculk patches: sculk growth on the cave floor and walls.
  • Lava removal: lava pools created by the biome's lake features are cleared from a radius of 10 to 12 blocks and replaced with deepslate. Dripstone blocks are replaced with blue ice in blobs of 7 to 12 blocks in radius. The cave therefore has less lava than most caves at the same depth.

The biome also has the full range of underground ores. These include coal, iron, gold, copper, redstone, lapis lazuli, and diamond, with the large and medium diamond veins also present. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore and black argillite to the biome.

Mobs and structures

The Frostfire Caves are a monster-heavy biome. The most common hostile mob is the Stray, which spawns in groups of four and carries the highest weight in the biome's monster table. Other frequent mobs include Slime Golem, Necromancer, Reaper, Restless Spirit, and Zombie Bruiser. Rarer horror mobs such as the Dread Hound and Krampus also spawn here. Water in the biome is populated by a range of fish, along with glow squid in the underground water and Coal Golem as an ambient mob.

The biome can contain several structures from other mods, including Graveyards, crypts, mineshafts, and ancient cities. The biome can generate 103 different structures in total, so the structure chests found here vary widely.

Tips

  • Carry light sources in quantity. The sky and fog are black, and the soul fire patches are the only other light source.
  • Soul fire burns anything that walks through it, so avoid walking across the soul fire patches on the floor.
  • Stray skeletons fire arrows that apply slowness, so fight them at a distance or break line of sight.
  • The lava in this biome is largely removed, so it is safer than most caves with lava pools. The lava-free floor does not make the cave safe, because the horror mobs spawn in large numbers.
  • Frostfire Caves can border other horror caves, such as Infested Caves and Spider Nest, because the pack lets these biomes spread into neighbouring caves. Expect the mobs of both biomes near the boundaries.
