The Ancient Sands is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. It is rare in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.05% of land. It is a large, structure-rich desert with a full set of ores, fossils and monster rooms underground, and its monster table is one of the largest in the pack, so it is dangerous after dark.

Description

The biome has no precipitation and a downfall value of 0, so it never rains or snows there. Its temperature value is 2, which places it in the hot biome group. The sky colour is #857769, a dusky brown-grey, and the fog colour is #bb9b9d, a muted rose. Water in the biome is tinted #77e0f7, a pale cyan.

Ambient audio uses the vanilla overworld desert music, played between 12000 and 24000 ticks apart, and the vanilla cave ambience every 6000 ticks. A falling sand particle appears with a 0.5% chance per tick, which gives a slow drift of dust in the air.

The biome's feature set lists no tree features. Its surface vegetation is limited to flowers, glow lichen, badlands grass patches, brown and red mushrooms, desert sugar cane and pumpkin patches.

Generation

The Ancient Sands is placed in hot, dry climate cells. It carries the vanilla minecraft:stronghold_biased_to tag, so strongholds are placed preferentially in this biome. It also belongs to the pack-wide terralith:all_terralith_biomes tag and several other biome tags used by structure mods.

The biome covers about 0.05% of land in Fear Nightfall. The pack's biome table gives Terralith as a whole about 31% of land, so this variant is a small part of that share. It is not one of the biomes weighted 6× in the pack's horror weighting, and the pack's deserts stay mostly normal, so the Ancient Sands is an unusual desert rather than a horror region.

Note: Because the biome is so rare, /locate biome terralith:ancient_sands is the usual way to find it. Biome searches on this server can run longer than the default tick watchdog allows, so the watchdog is disabled (max-tick-time=-1), and a search takes about 14 seconds.

Features

Underground, the biome generates the full vanilla ore set. Its diamond, lapis, iron, gold, copper, coal and redstone placements include the large and buried diamond variants, along with andesite, diorite, granite, tuff and gravel. Pack mods add Born in Chaos infected diamond ore and black argillite, Iron's Spells mithril ore, and Butchery sulfur ore.

The biome also generates desert wells, vanilla fossils (upper and lower), monster rooms, deep monster rooms, an amethyst geode, lava lakes above and below ground, and spring water and lava. Stony Cliffs adds a cliff feature. Surface features from other mods include Farmer's Delight wild tomatoes, Supplementaries wild flax and cave urns.

Mobs and structures

The biome has a large monster table. The vanilla entries in the Terralith biome definition are spider, skeleton, creeper and slime (each with weight 100), husk (80), zombie (19), enderman (10), witch (5) and zombie villager (1). Pack mods add many more monster types, including Born in Chaos and Graveyard mobs. The generated tables below list the full sets.

Among the pack's additions, Dread Hound and Nightmare each have weight 7, and Krampus has weight 1. The creature table lists rabbits (weight 4) and a camel (weight 1). Bats and glow squids appear in the ambient and underground water tables.

The biome can generate about 171 structures. Terralith's Desert Outpost is one of the notable ones, along with Iron's Spells evoker forts and catacombs, and several desert and ruin structures from the mods listed in the structure table.

Tips

  • Diamonds and lapis are common underground. Strip mining near the monster rooms and fossils is efficient, but expect hostile mobs there.
  • Strongholds are biased toward this biome, so it is a good place to search for an end portal.
  • Spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and husks have the largest weights in the monster table, so they are the most frequent threats at night.
  • The monster table is larger than most desert biomes in the pack. Check the table above before a night trip.
