White Mesa is a warm, dry badlands biome added by Terralith. Its surface is terracotta laid out in pale and coloured patches, and it is one of the rarest biomes in the pack. The mobs that spawn here are a mix of vanilla monsters and a large horror roster, so a player who finds a White Mesa should expect a hostile night.

White Mesa belongs to the same climate family as the other Terralith mesas, such as Savanna Badlands and Snowy Badlands, but its colour scheme and spawn list set it apart. It is tagged as badlands and as a plateau, so badlands-only structures can appear in it.

Description

White Mesa has the flat-topped, terraced look typical of badlands terrain. The ground is terracotta, broken up by large blobs of other terracotta colours. The terracotta feature replaces plain terracotta with white, black, brown, light grey, orange, red and yellow terracotta in blobs with a radius of 7 to 12 blocks. The white blobs give the biome its name and its pale appearance.

Vegetation is sparse. Badlands grass, dead bushes, cacti, sugar cane and pumpkin patches are placed on the surface. Wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries appear as well, and wild tomato patches from Farmer's Delight can grow here.

The biome uses a pale blue sky (#b1d1ff) and a light blue fog (#cde6ff). The grass and foliage are a dull olive-brown, and the water is a deep blue. The colours are calm and muted, which makes the open mesa feel exposed, especially at night when the horror mobs come out.

Generation

White Mesa is a warm biome with a temperature of 2 and no precipitation. Its downfall is 0, so it stays dry. It is rare: it covers 0.04% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall's world, so a player may need to travel a long way to find one. Terralith as a whole covers about 31% of the land in the pack's calibrated biome table, but White Mesa takes only a tiny share of that.

The biome is not one of the horror biomes that the pack weights at 6×. Its monster list is still dominated by horror mobs, so it feels dangerous even without the extra weighting.

Features

The features that define White Mesa are:

  • Terracotta blobs. Coloured terracotta patches cover the surface, as described above.
  • Ores. The biome uses the standard overworld ore set from vanilla, including coal, copper, iron, gold, redstone, lapis and diamond, along with the buried diamond and lapis variants. Several mod ores are placed as well: mithril ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, infected diamond ore and black argillite from Born in Chaos, and sulfur and salt ore from Butchery.
  • Surface plants. Badlands grass, dead bush, cactus, sugar cane and pumpkin patches, as listed above.
  • Cliffs. The cliff feature from Stony Cliffs Are Cool can place cliff terrain in the biome.

Mobs and structures

White Mesa has one of the more varied spawn lists in the pack. Vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies share the top of the monster list. Horror mobs from several mods are added, including Necromancer, Nightmare, Dread Hound, Mutant Skeleton and Nightmare Stalker, along with many lesser monsters. Slime Golem also spawns among the monsters. Terracotta Golem spawns as a creature here, because the biome carries the terracotta golem spawn tag.

Water creatures are sparse. Corpse Fish spawn in surface water, and glow squid spawn in underground water. Bats and wolves are the other passive spawns, with a small chance of armadillos.

The structure list for White Mesa is long, with 177 structures able to generate here. These include mesa villages from Overhauled Villages, Mutant Monsters structures, and several illager camps and hideouts, such as Illager Hideout and Manor. The full list of mobs, structures and loot is in the table below.

Tips

  • White Mesa is rare, so note where you find one and plan to return to it. The spawn list is harsh, so explore it in daylight if you can.
  • Terracotta can be collected here for building, but the surface has few plants, so food and wood must come from somewhere else.
  • The horror mobs in this biome make a night in the open dangerous. Bring armour, a shield and light sources, and keep a bed or a shelter close by.
