The Bryce Canyon is a hot, dry overworld biome added by Terralith. It is one of the badlands-style biomes in that mod, and it is rare in Fear Nightfall, covering about 0.16% of the land surface. Its spawn lists are long and heavily horror-weighted, so it is a dangerous place to stop at night, even though its terrain is open and easy to see across.
Description
The biome is an arid canyon. Its tags place it with the other badlands biomes, and a canyon carver cuts into the terrain, so the ground is broken by deep cuts and open ledges rather than flat plains. Plant cover is sparse. Dead bushes, grass patches, decorated cacti and sugar cane grow on the ground, and pumpkin patches add orange clusters. Some old-growth spruce trees also grow here, which is unusual for a dry biome.
The biome colours are set by the Terralith biome effects. Grass is #90814d and foliage is #9e814d, both dull olive-brown. Water is #3f76e4, a clear blue. Fog is #e2d7c3 and sky is #e2d3b3, both pale sand tones, so the air looks hazy and warm. The ambient mood sound is the vanilla cave sound, and the overworld badlands music is used for the background track. The biome has no precipitation.
Generation
Bryce Canyon has a temperature of 2 and a downfall of 0. It is hot and dry, so the pack's custom biome source places it in the hot, dry climate cells, where it shares space with other eligible biomes by weight. Its share of the land surface in Fear Nightfall is 0.16%.
It is not one of the biomes weighted 6× for horror. Horror biomes in the pack concentrate in temperate-to-cool, humid forests, taigas and swamps, and hot desert-like biomes such as this one stay mostly normal. The biome still carries a long list of horror mobs and structures, so the risk comes from its spawns rather than from its weighting.
Features
- Canyon carver. The biome uses the vanilla canyon carver, which cuts large ravines into the terrain.
- Plants. Dead bushes, grass patches, cacti, sugar cane, pumpkin patches, glow lichen and brown and red mushrooms are placed on the ground. The old-growth spruce tree feature is also placed here.
- Fluids. Spring water and spring lava appear in the terrain, and underground and surface lava lakes can generate.
- Ores. The biome has the vanilla ore set, with copper, coal, iron, gold, redstone, lapis, and diamond in its medium, large and buried forms, plus granite, diorite, andesite, tuff, gravel and dirt. Mods add their own ores: Iron's Spells 'n' Spellbooks places Mithril ore, Born in Chaos places infected deepslate diamond ore and Black Argillite, and Butchery places deepslate Sulfur ore. Sand, clay and gravel discs also generate.
- Cave life. Glow squids spawn in underground water.
Mobs and structures
The monster spawn list is one of the longest in the pack. It starts with vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes at weight 100 each, and Zombie at weight 95. Horror mobs follow at lower weights, including the Necromancer, the Dread Hound, Krampus, the Mutant Enderman, Nightmare Stalker and the Lifestealer. The rarest entries, at weight 1, are Krampus, Lifestealer, Mutant Enderman and the Supreme Bonescaller.
The creature list is small. It has terracotta golems at weight 6, wolves at weight 2 and armadillos at weight 1. Bats are the only ambient mob. In water, the list includes Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish along with many other fish types.
The biome has 134 structure types that can generate in it. Notable ones include the Illager Hideout and Manor, the Firewell from Born in Chaos, which is a horror structure, and several Pillager Outposts variants for badlands and wooded badlands. The pack's merged village set also applies, so Bryce Canyon can get mesa villages and fortified mesa villages. Better Mineshafts and vanilla mesa mineshafts appear as well, and the Dungeons and Taverns outposts and camps are also possible.
Tips
- Carry light and a sturdy weapon. The monster list is dense after dark, and the open, sparse ground gives mobs a clear line of sight.
- The canyon walls drop sharply. Watch your footing near ledges, and keep a water bucket ready for falls.
- Spring lava and lava lakes are on the surface as well as underground, so check the ground before you walk or build.
- Pumpkin patches and the mob spawns around them make the biome a poor choice for a quiet base, so build near shelter rather than in the open canyon.
