Steppe is a dry, temperate overworld biome added by Terralith. It is an open landscape of grass-covered cliffs, small bushes and patches of ground cover, with few woody plants. In Fear Nightfall it is a common Terralith biome that carries a large monster population, so it is a place where players should plan for the night.

Description

The steppe has a dry climate, with a temperature value of 0.4 and a downfall value of -0.5. Its precipitation is rain. Its terrain is built from Terralith's canyon and cliff features, which place grass on the upper and lower faces of cliffs and scatter slabs of stone across the ground. The biome has no tree features of its own. Its only woody plants are small bushes, which are placed sparsely, with one bush attempt in roughly every ten chunks.

Ground cover is made from glow lichen, lichen, tall grass patches, brown and red mushroom patches, sugar cane and pumpkin patches. Pumpkin patches are among the plants that grow on the surface.

The biome's colours are set by its data. Water is tinted #3f76e4, a deep blue. Fog is #c0d8ff, a pale blue, and the sky is tinted #78a7ff. Its ambient cave sound plays every 6,000 ticks (5 minutes), which adds to the bleak mood.

Generation

The steppe is one of Terralith's temperate biomes. It makes up about 0.51% of the land surface in Fear Nightfall, measured on the live server, as shown in the infobox. Terralith as a whole covers about 31% of land, so the steppe is a small part of that share.

The pack replaces the usual biome selection with a custom biome table. In each climate cell, every biome allowed there shares the cell by weight. The steppe is not among the biomes that the pack weights at 6×, so it is not one of the horror concentrations. Those concentrate in humid forests, taigas and swamps. The steppe is not in that area, and its dry climate does not match it.

Features

The steppe uses the vanilla ore set, with its ores spread through the stone layers. This includes the granite, diorite, andesite and tuff ore features, coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis and gravel. Diamond ore is generated in four forms: standard, buried, medium and large. Gravel disks are placed across the surface.

The biome also includes several ores from other mods. Born in Chaos adds infected diamond ore, infected deepslate diamond ore and black argillite. Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks adds mithril ore. Butchery adds sulfur ore in deepslate and a salt disc generation feature.

Plant and surface features from other mods include wild carrots and wild onions from Farmer's Delight, wild flax and cave urns from Supplementaries, and a cliff feature from the stonycliffs mod.

Mobs and structures

The steppe's monster spawns are led by spiders, skeletons, creepers, slimes and zombies, which all have a spawn weight of 95 or more. Necromancers (weight 18), Slime Golems (weight 25), Mutant Zombies (weight 4) and Mutant Creepers (weight 5) make up a second group. Rarer threats include Nightmares and Dread Hounds (weight 7 each), Sir Pumpkinheads (weight 2) and Krampus (weight 1). The full spawn tables are generated below.

Passive mobs include sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, ferrets and donkeys. Bats spawn as ambient mobs. Water spawns include Corpse Fish and Glutton Fish in the open water, and a range of fish, such as Bluegill and Perch, which have the highest weights.

The steppe can generate 184 structures. Several are tied to the pack's horror theme. These include the Dark Tower from Born in Chaos, the Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, the Illager Hideout and Manor, Graveyards and the Fortified Villages from Terralith. The full list is generated below.

Tips

  • Plan trips across the steppe for daylight. The monster spawns here are large, and the biome has no trees to break up sight lines.
  • Carry torches and other light sources. Monsters spawn in darkness.
  • Be ready for Sir Pumpkinhead and Krampus, which spawn here at low weights, when you pass through pumpkin patches after dark.
  • Fish in the water for the variety of fish here. Bluegill and Perch are the most common catches.
  • The Regions Unexplored mod also has a biome named Steppe. That mod removes it from world creation, so it does not appear in Fear Nightfall worlds.
