The Valley Clearing is an overworld biome added by Terralith. It is a temperate, rainy biome with canyon-cut terrain, open grassland, and a set of ore veins and buried dungeons. In Fear Nightfall it is one of the rarest surface biomes in the pack, and its hostile spawn list includes several Born in Chaos horror mobs alongside common vanilla-style hostiles.

Description

The biome uses Terralith's canyon terrain. Canyon carvers cut through the ground, and cliff features built from canyon grass and slab-stone sets line the walls. Between the canyons the ground is covered with grass, glow lichen, steppe bushes, and tall grass. Wild pumpkin and sugar cane patches grow across the surface, along with brown and red mushrooms.

Water in the biome is tinted #617b90. The fog and sky are pale blue (#c0d8ff and #78a7ff). The biome uses the cave ambience sound on a 6000-tick delay.

Generation

Valley Clearing sits in the temperate climate band, with a temperature of 0.4 and a downfall of -0.5. It has rain rather than snow. In Fear Nightfall it covers about 0.04% of land, so it is rarely found by chance. A biome finder such as Nature's Compass is the practical way to locate one.

The biome is not among the horror biomes given 6× weight by the pack's biome table (see Horror and Spooky Content). Its horror character comes from its mob list rather than from extra weighting.

Structures from the pack's structure mods can generate here. Terralith's Valley Lodge structure is tagged for this biome, so it can also be found here.

Features

  • Ores: the biome has the full set of vanilla-style ore veins, from coal and copper through to diamond, buried diamond, and lapis. It also has Terralith's gravel discs and Born in Chaos infected diamond ore features.
  • Underground: lava lakes, amethyst geodes, and monster rooms (both shallow and deep) appear beneath the surface. Underwater magma is among the placed features.
  • Plants: sugar cane, pumpkins, tall grass, wild carrots, wild onions, wild flax, and cave urns from Supplementaries.
  • Water: spring water is one of the placed features.

Mobs and structures

The biome's hostile spawn list is led by Spider, Skeleton, Creeper, and Slime (weight 100 each), followed by Zombie (weight 95). The list also includes several horror mobs at lower weights:

  • Slime Golem (weight 25) and Necromancer (weight 18).
  • Dread Hound (weight 7).
  • Spiders Mother (weight 6), Nightmare Stalker, Dire Hound Leader, Sir Pumpkinhead, and Krampus (weights 1 to 2).

Passive animals spawn in the biome: sheep (weight 12), pig and chicken (weight 10 each), cow (weight 8), and horse (weight 5). Bats and glow squid appear in the air and underground water, and a range of freshwater fish appear in the water.

The tables below list every mob and structure that can appear here.

Tips

  • Treat the biome as night-time territory. Its hostile list is far longer than its passive list, and the canyon walls give mobs many places to approach from.
  • Carry light for the canyon floors and the monster rooms underground.
  • Because the biome is rare, a single Valley Clearing may be the only one within reach. Plan a trip there with food and armour in hand.
  • The monster rooms are among the most dangerous places in the biome. Clear them in daylight or with a group.
