Born in Chaos is a horror content mod for NeoForge 1.21.1 (version 1.7.6). It adds roughly 100 mob types, several hundred items, 31 surface structure sets and a set of date-based seasonal events. Its hostile mobs spawn in almost every Overworld biome, so players meet them early in a world and throughout the game.
The mod is built around graves, pumpkins, spirits, spiders and hounds, with a progression of bosses and mini-bosses that culminates in Krampus and Lifestealer. Its Halloween, Christmas and Easter content also changes ordinary zombies and skeletons during the holidays.
Overview
Born in Chaos adds a horror layer on top of the base game. Its mobs are mostly hostile monsters grouped into recurring themes: undead, spirits, spiders, pumpkins, hounds and water creatures, together with a set of human raiders and knights. The mod also adds graves and towers on the surface, two ore types, a wood set, stained glass, decorative blocks and a large item set of armour, weapons, consumables and food.
The mod depends on GeckoLib, which it uses for most of its entities and many of its items. Its weapon attack ranges use Better Combat, so those attributes only apply when Better Combat is installed. Its Krampus's Bag reward table also draws on items from several optional mods when they are present.
In Fear Nightfall, the mod's spawns are confined to the Overworld and its structures are placed closer together. Its naughtiness punishment system is disabled. The In Fear Nightfall section below gives the details.
Content
Each page below covers one member of a group in detail. Item and mob statistics are on the linked pages.
Bosses and mini-bosses
The bosses and mini-bosses are Nightmare Stalker, Lifestealer, Krampus, Bonescaller, Supreme Bonescaller, Lord Pumpkinhead, Sir Pumpkinhead, Mother Spider, Dire Hound Leader, Skeleton Demoman, Zombie Clown, Spirit Guide, Fallen Chaos Knight, Spirit of Chaos and Dark Vortex. Several of them are named by the advancements listed at the end of this page.
Undead
The most common spawns are zombie and skeleton variants. Decaying Zombie, Barrel Zombie, Zombie Lumberjack, Zombie Bruiser, Zombie Fisherman and Swarmer are zombies, and Siamese Skeletons, Baby Skeleton, Decrepit Skeleton and Skeleton Thrasher are skeletons. Phantom Creeper and Bone Imp are also hostile undead-themed mobs.
Spirits and fire mobs
Restless Spirit, Pumpkin Spirit, Infernal Spirit, Seared Spirit, Firelight, Spirit of Chaos and Dark Vortex are the spirit and fire mobs. Seared Spirit and Firelight have their own spawn restrictions (see Mechanics).
Spiders, insects and water creatures
Mother Spider and its young are the spider line. Diamond Termite, Bloody Gadfly and Maggot and Corpse Fly are insects. Corpse Fish, Glutton Fish and Thornshell Crab are water creatures. The crab spawns only in certain water biomes.
Pumpkins
The pumpkin mobs include Pumpkinhead, Pumpkin Bomb, Pumpkin Bruiser, Pumpkin Dunce, Mr. and Mrs. Pumpkin and Senor Pumpkin. They tie into the mod's Evil Pumpkins and Fel Lamps blocks and the Halloween event.
Hounds, raiders and knights
Dread Hound appears in groups of 3 to 5. Dire Hound Leader is the hound boss. Missioner and Missionary Raider is a raider that can join raids, Scarlet Persecutor and Door Knight are hostile mobs, and Fallen Chaos Knight is a boss.
Structures
The mod adds 31 structure sets, each restricted to a list of biomes. Tombstones and Graves covers about 19 single-tombstone grave sites. The larger structures are Dark Tower (forest, plains and taiga), Clown Caravan (plains, savanna and taiga), Observation Tower (forest and plains), Mound of Hounds (desert), Firewell, Abandoned Farm and Infernal Pumpkin Patch.
Blocks and ores
Dark Metal comes from the Dark Metal Deposit ore. Black Argillite is a stone-based vein ore with a family of building blocks. Scorched Wood is a wood set that vanilla wood tags accept. Born in Chaos Glass is stained and ornate glass. Evil Pumpkins and Fel Lamps covers carved pumpkins and lamps, and Fel Soil and Rotten Soil covers the soil blocks used with them. Traps and Webs covers the hound traps, cobweb covers and related blocks.
Armour, weapons and magic
Born in Chaos Armor and Hats covers the armour sets and hats. Born in Chaos Melee Weapons covers the swords, axes and hammers. Born in Chaos Staffs and Ranged Weapons covers the staffs, the Pumpkin Pistol and the magic items. Charms come in five kinds: Strength, Resistance, Stealth, Fury and Endurance.
Consumables and food
Elixirs, Decoctions and Bombs covers the brewed elixirs and decoctions, along with the bombs. Born in Chaos Food covers smoked foods, monster flesh and river mint. Born in Chaos Materials covers the crafting materials and miscellaneous items. The holiday candies and Easter eggs are on Seasonal Events.
Effects
Born in Chaos Effects lists the mod's approximately 61 mob effects.
Mechanics
Spawns. The mod has 45 spawn entries. Forty-one apply to every biome. Four are restricted: Bone Imp (basalt deltas and nether wastes), Firelight (crimson forest and nether wastes), Seared Spirit (plains and sunflower plains) and Thornshell Crab (beaches, rivers, swamps and similar water biomes). The highest weights belong to Decaying Zombie and Zombie Fisherman at 30 each, followed by Baby Skeleton, Barrel Zombie and Zombie Lumberjack at 25 each. Mother Spider's baby spiders and Dread Hound appear in groups of 3 to 5.
Naughtiness. A hidden score on each player rises when they kill villagers, wandering traders or animals, and when they drink Spiritual Gingerbread. It falls when they tame an animal, use bone meal or eat Creepy Cookies With Milk. Warnings and Darkness fire at about 35, 50, 75 and 85, and at 100 a punishment fires once per cycle: two seconds of Darkness and a Krampus spawn beside the player if the space is clear. The Evilometer item shows the value. See Naughtiness and Krampus for the full rules.
Seasonal events. Events follow the server's system date. Halloween runs from October 25 to November 7, Chilling Horror from December 21 to January 10, and Chaotic Spring from April 10 to 22. On spawn, about 35% of zombies and 25% of skeletons receive a seasonal head item and sometimes a held item. Chaotic Spring also grants Jump II for its duration. Rabbits drop Easter eggs at a small chance. Each event can also be forced on with its own gamerule.
Death prevention. The Death Totem, held in the offhand, cancels a lethal hit and sets health to 3. The Dark Atrium grants Dark Ward for 60 minutes, which cancels one lethal hit and sets health to 10. Effects. Born in Chaos Effects includes several combat effects. Bone Barrier blocks one hit. Ice Barrier chills attackers. Insect Protection deals 6 damage to attackers. Vampiric Touch and Lifesteal heal the holder when they damage an enemy. Rampage has five tiers, built by consecutive kills with the Great Reaper Axe from Born in Chaos Melee Weapons.
Armour sets. The Dark Metal set gives wither resistance and Rampage at low health. The Nightmare Mantle set makes the wearer faster in the dark. The Spiny Shell set damages attackers in return.
Progression. Mine Dark Metal Deposit with an iron tool to get Dark Metal, its armour, a smithing upgrade template and the Dark Warblade or Sharpened Dark Metal Sword. A Fel Lamp summons a Felsteed, a rideable mount, when right-clicked. Elixirs and decoctions come from twelve custom brewing recipes.
Worldgen ores. Black Argillite forms veins of up to 27 blocks in stone, three per chunk, between Y −17 and 17. Infected Diamond Ore generates in stone between Y 0 and 16, and Infected Deepslate Diamond Ore in deepslate between Y −128 and −8. Both diamond ores are controlled by the generationofInfectedDiamonds gamerule, which is on by default.
Changes to vanilla
- Zombie maggots. Zombies, husks, zombie villagers, drowned out of water and zombie horses have a 15% chance to drop a Corpse Maggot on death. The
maggotsAppearancegamerule controls this. - Tag additions. Scorched and Black Argillite blocks join the vanilla plank, log, stair, slab, fence, wall, button and pressure plate tags. Recipes that accept any plank therefore accept Scorched Planks.
- Undead and arthropods. The mod's undead mobs, including Lifestealer and Siamese Skeletons, join the
minecraft:undeadtag. Its spiders and insects join the arthropod tag. Smite and Bane of Arthropods therefore treat them as undead and arthropods. - Raids. The Missionary raider is added to the raider tag and to a new raider type.
- Composter. Rotten Fish and Sea Terror Eye are added as compostable items.
- Furnace fuel. Fire Light Dust and Smoldering Infernal Ember burn for 3500 and 3000 ticks in a furnace.
- Flowers. Marigolds and River Mint join the vanilla flower tags and generate as vegetation.
In Fear Nightfall
- Naughtiness is disabled. The
naughtinessMechanicsgamerule is switched off and reapplied on every datapack load. No naughtiness score builds up and the Krampus punishment does not trigger. - Nether and End spawns removed. Before the pack's changes, the mod's mobs made up 98% of End spawns. Its spawn entries are now limited to the Overworld, plus Willow Swamp, Sleepy Hollows and two undergrowth biomes it had missed. Overworld spawns are unchanged.
- Monster cap share reduced. Spawn weights were halved, so the mod now fills about 26% of the monster cap, down from 36%.
- Structures placed closer. Born in Chaos structures are placed about 30% closer together. Where they share a structure set with other structures they receive 6 times the weight. Horror structures cluster in temperate-to-cool humid forests, taigas and swamps, where about 25% of structures are horror-themed. Deserts, jungles and peaks remain mostly normal.
- Loot. The pack's loot additions do not apply to Born in Chaos structures. Their chests keep only their own loot.
- Seasonal events. The
seasonalEventsgamerule is on, so the date-based events run. The three forced-event gamerules remain off.
