Firelight is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It is a small, fire-immune monster that lives in the Nether-style biomes Crimson Forest and Nether Wastes, and it sets its targets alight when it strikes them. A player who fights Firelights in the Nether should expect burning and should bring fire-protected armour or a water source. A second, persistent form of the mob also appears in Firewell structures in the Overworld, where it does not despawn.
Spawning
Firelights spawn naturally only in Crimson Forest and Nether Wastes. Their biome modifier gives them a weight of 15 and a group size of 1 to 3 in each of these biomes. Natural spawning of the Firelight is controlled by the firelightSpawn game rule, which is enabled by default; when it is disabled, the placement check for natural spawns fails and no new Firelights spawn naturally. The game rule does not affect the persistent variant, which is placed by structures.
Firelights are placed with the ON_GROUND spawn placement type, so they only appear on solid ground that blocks motion. They are not tied to a time of day in their biome modifier.
The mob can also be obtained with the spawn eggs
Firelight Spawn Egg and
Firelight Spawn Egg.

Behavior
A Firelight is a melee monster with 15 health (7.5 hearts), 2 attack damage (1 heart), a movement speed of 0.3 and a follow range of 16 blocks. Its knockback resistance is 0.1, and it has no armour. Its hitbox is 0.8 × 0.8 blocks. It is also listed in the minecraft:arthropod entity type tag.
Its goals are, in priority order:
- Melee attack at a speed of 1.1, which requires line of sight and an attack in range.
- Target the nearest player that it can see (
NearestAttackableTargetGoal). - Retaliate against whatever last hurt it (
HurtByTargetGoal). - Wander on land, avoiding water, at a speed of 0.8.
- Look around randomly and float in water.
- Target the nearest Pumpkin Spirit.
When a Firelight hits a player or another hostile or mob entity that is not blocking, that target is set on fire for 2 seconds. The ignition does not happen when the target is blocking with a shield.
Firelights do not burn, and they take no damage from the in-fire damage type. They also ignore fall damage and dragon's breath damage. Other damage, including lava damage, hurts them normally.
The Firelight drops 5 experience points when it dies. Its death animation lasts 20 ticks, after which it is removed. If the block below its position can be occluded, the game places a fire block at its position at that moment, and it spawns lava particles.
The entity has a SHOOT data field, but no ranged attack uses it, so a Firelight does not shoot projectiles.
Drops
A Firelight always drops one roll of
Fire Light Dust, with a count of 0 to 2. This is the only loot entry for the mob. Fire Light Dust is used in the crafting of Scorched Wood, and it burns for 3500 units in a furnace as fuel.

| Item | Amount | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
Fire Light Dust | x0.0-2.0 |
Firelight (persistent)
No item drops.
Variants
The Firelight (persistent) variant has the same stats, attributes and behaviour as the normal Firelight. The differences are:
- It is set to persistent when it is created, so it does not despawn.
- It never despawns because of distance from a player.
- It has its own spawn egg,
Firelight Spawn Egg. - It has no natural biome spawn entries. It is placed by the Firewell structure, which is found on the Overworld surface in biomes that are biased toward strongholds.
The persistent variant also sets the player on fire when it hits them, and it has the same death behaviour, including the fire placement and experience drop.
| Mob | Health | Damage | Armor | Speed | Size | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firelight | 15.0 | 2.0 | 0.3 | 0.8×0.8 | Hostile | |
| Firelight (persistent) | 15.0 | 2.0 | 0.3 | 0.8×0.8 | Hostile |
Tips
- Stay out of the Nether's crimson forests and nether wastes at low health. Each Firelight hit sets you on fire for two seconds, and the damage from burning can add up when several Firelights are in a group.
- Firelights take no damage from in-fire damage, so fire-based attacks do little against them. Use melee, arrows or other non-fire damage instead.
- A shield prevents the ignition from a Firelight hit, because the mob does not set a blocking target on fire.
- Firelights target players, so they will come toward you from up to 16 blocks away. Fight them where the ground is clear, since their group size can reach three.
- Because the persistent variant does not despawn, a Firewell that you leave alone keeps its Firelights. Plan to clear them before you use the structure as a base.
