Naughtiness and Krampus
Naughtiness is a hidden score that Born in Chaos keeps for each player. Killing villagers and animals raises it, while taming animals, using bone meal and eating certain food lowers it. At high values the score brings warning messages, short bouts of Darkness and a Krampus that spawns beside the player. The score is shown by the Evilometer item.
In Fear Nightfall the mechanic is switched off. The pack turns off the naughtinessMechanics gamerule every time the datapack loads, so the score never changes, no warnings or punishments occur, and Krampus does not spawn from it. The rest of this article describes how the mechanic works in the mod itself, which is the behaviour on an unmodified Born in Chaos install.
Status in Fear Nightfall
- The
naughtinessMechanicsgamerule is set tofalseby the server setup function and reapplied on every datapack load. - The score is not changed by any of the actions listed below, so it stays at its starting value.
- No warning messages, Darkness effects or punishment Krampus spawns occur.
- The Evilometer readout does not move from its starting value, and the Birch Branches bonus against naughty players has no effect.
- Krampus can still be met through its ordinary spawn rules, but the score does not summon it.
- Food items that refer to the score, such as Spiritual Gingerbread and Creepy Cookies With Milk (see Born in Chaos Food), can still be eaten, but eating them does not change the score.
How the score changes
The table lists the changes the mod applies while the gamerule is on. Every value is added to or subtracted from the score, which starts at 0 for each player.
| Action | Change |
|---|---|
| Killing an adult villager or wandering trader | +10 |
| Killing a baby villager or wandering trader | +15 |
| Killing a baby animal | +10 |
| Killing an Axolotl, tadpole, parrot, turtle or Panda | +4 |
| Killing any other animal | +1 |
| Eating Spiritual Gingerbread | +3 |
| Taming an animal | −5 |
| Using bone meal | −1 |
| Eating Creepy Cookies With Milk, only while the score is at least 3 | −3 |
Killing Krampus as a player sets the score to 15, regardless of its previous value.
Warnings and punishments
Each threshold below is checked when the score changes. Warnings fire once per player and are tracked in the player's persistent data, so a player who has already seen one does not see it again.
| Score | Effect |
|---|---|
| 35 to 50 | First warning message |
| 50 to 65 | Darkness for 1 second, and two Krampus Henchmen spawn on the player's east and west sides if those spaces are clear |
| 65 to 75 | Second warning message |
| 85 to 95 | Final warning message |
| 100 or more | Darkness for 2 seconds, and a Krampus spawns on the player's east side if the space there is clear |
The punishment has a counter. When a punishment fires, the counter is set to 5 and it drops by one each time the player triggers the mechanic again. A new punishment at the same tier can fire only after the counter reaches zero. Player deaths caused by a punishment use the punishment damage type.
Evilometer
The Evilometer is an item that shows the player's naughtiness score. Its value readout changes at 25, 45, 65 and 90. Holding it lets the player see which band they are in. The item is only useful with the mechanic on, and in Fear Nightfall it always shows the starting value.
Gamerule
naughtinessMechanics is on by default in Born in Chaos. It controls every change and every punishment described in this article. Turning it off stops the score from changing and disables the warnings, Darkness and Krampus spawns. The pack's setup function sets it to false, so server operators do not need to change anything for the mechanic to stay off.
Tips
- Killing villagers and animals has no score cost in Fear Nightfall, so the Evilometer can be ignored when planning hunts or village raids.
- A player who wants to meet Krampus should look for it through the Krampus page, since the score does not summon it in this pack.
