The Diamond Termite is a hostile mob added by Born in Chaos. It is a small, fire-immune insect that is never found in the wild. It appears only when a player mines an infected diamond ore block, and it is the sole source of the Diamond Termite Shard, the material used to craft diamonds.
Each Diamond Termite has 14 health (7 hearts), 8 armor, 2 attack damage and a movement speed of 0.3. It is classed as a monster and belongs to the minecraft:arthropod entity type tag, so enchantments and effects that target arthropods apply to it.
Spawning
Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).
The Diamond Termite has no natural spawn entries in any biome, and no structure places one. Every termite is created by a mining or explosion event at an infected diamond ore block (see Infected Diamond Ore). Each termite is spawned with the summoned spawn type.
Two ore types produce termites:
- Infected Diamond Ore (stone variant) and Infected Deepslate Diamond Ore (deepslate variant) each spawn one termite at the position of the broken block when a player breaks them.
- Any orthogonally adjacent block of the same ore type (north, south, east or west) is destroyed at the same time and spawns a second termite at its own position. Only the four side neighbours are checked, not diagonals. Ore blocks adjacent to the one broken are destroyed without dropping extra ore, so a vein of ore produces one termite per block.
- Explosions destroy the ore block and spawn the same termites, following the same neighbour rule.
Breaking an ore block with the correct tool (an iron pickaxe or better) yields the ore's normal drops, but the termite spawn happens whether or not the block was harvested. Mining the stone variant of the ore therefore releases termites even when the player uses a tool that does not harvest it.
Because termites come from ore, the number of termites in a world depends on how many infected diamond ores the player has opened. The stone variant generates from Y 0 to 16 and the deepslate variant from Y -128 to -8, so mining deep ore veins is the usual source of termites. Infected ore generation is controlled by the generationofInfectedDiamonds gamerule, which is on by default. Turning it off prevents new ore from generating but does not remove termites from ore already placed.
Each termite spawns with Jump Boost II (amplifier 1) for 100 ticks (5 seconds). This is applied on every spawn, including spawns from explosions.
Behavior
The Diamond Termite walks toward and attacks the nearest player it can see within its 14-block follow range. It also attacks any entity that damages it. Its melee attack has a reach based on its bounding box width and requires line of sight to the target. Its attack damage is 2, and its knockback resistance is 0.2. Its attack knockback is 0.1.
When it is not pursuing a target, it wanders on land, avoiding water, and looks around. It floats when it is in water.
Its defences are unusual. It takes no damage from fire, from falling, or from explosions (both player and entity explosions). It also ignores explosion knockback. Its armor value of 8 reduces the damage it takes from other sources. It is not immune to melee or projectile attacks, so it can be killed with ordinary weapons.
When it dies, it stays on the ground for 20 ticks before it is removed, and it gives 8 experience points.
Drops
A Diamond Termite always drops one Diamond Termite Shard. Looting increases the count by 1 to 2 per level, up to a maximum of 8 shards per kill.
The shard is the only thing the termite drops, and it is the only way to get them. The table below lists the drop.

Tips
Each adjacent ore block that is destroyed releases its own termite at its own position, so a vein opened in a narrow tunnel can put several termites within reach at once. Fighting them in a wider space gives more room to retreat.
Explosions are not a safe way to clear infected ore. A creeper or TNT blast destroys the ore and releases termites without any player action, and the termites cannot be hurt by the blast itself.
Termites ignore fire, so fire-based attacks and fire traps do nothing to them. Use melee weapons, arrows or thrown items instead. Their 8 armor value makes low-damage attacks less effective, so prefer weapons with high damage per hit.
