The Observation Tower is a surface structure added by Born in Chaos. It is a narrow tower of stone, black argillite brick and spruce wood that generates in the Overworld, in forest and plains biomes. Its interior holds spawners for Restless Spirits and a spider, a few persistent Decaying Zombies and a Door Knight, and five chests. Players visit it for the chest loot, and it is one of the pack's horror structures, so it is more dangerous at night.

In-game, the Born in Chaos item that places the tower is called "Spawn Structures: Lookout Tower". The structure itself is the Observation Tower.

Generation

The tower is a single jigsaw structure in the Overworld. It has two placement sets, one for each biome group:

  • Forest variant: placed in biomes tagged as forest, 41 biomes in total, including Forest, Dark Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Forest, Bamboo Forest and Flower Forest. Its placement spacing is about 45 chunks, and a sample of 26 km² found 6 of them.
  • Plains variant: placed in a fixed list of 20 open biomes, including Plains, Prairie, Steppe, Grassland, Shrubland, Poppy Fields and Flower Fields. Its spacing is about 141 chunks, and the same sample found 1.

The tower is placed on the surface, and its base adapts to the terrain with the thin beard adaptation, so it sits on the ground. It is part of the pack's horror group. Under the Fear Nightfall changes, horror structures are placed about 30% closer together than the mod default, and where a horror structure shares a structure set with other structures it gets 6 times the weight. Forests, taigas and swamps are where horror structures concentrate in this pack, so the forest variant is the more common of the two.

Layout

The tower is built from the template born_in_chaos_v1:lookout_tower, which is 13 blocks wide, 13 blocks deep and 48 blocks tall. Its exterior is mostly stone brick, andesite and black argillite brick, with spruce and dark oak planks, slabs and stairs, trapdoors, fences, chains and lanterns. Barrels and cobwebs are placed inside, and the template includes a bell.

The template contains three spawners. Two are set to Restless Spirit and one is set to a spider. The template also places fixed mobs: two Decaying Zombies and one Door Knight, all of them the persistent "not despawn" variants, so they stay in the tower and do not despawn over time.

The 52 barrels hold farm produce, not loot. They contain wheat seeds, pumpkin seeds, melon seeds, potatoes, apples and carrots. These are flavour items and are not part of the chest tables.

Inhabitants

  • Restless Spirit: produced by the two Restless Spirit spawners. Restless Spirits are flying melee monsters with a melee hit of 2 damage. Spirits that can see the sky are removed during the day.
  • Spider: produced by the third spawner.
  • Decaying Zombie: two persistent copies are placed in the tower.
  • Door Knight: one persistent copy is placed in the tower.

Loot

The tower has five chests. Four use the basic chest table and one uses the level 1 chest table. The level 1 chest is the better of the two. Its most useful drops are iron ingots, gold ingots, gunpowder, books and emeralds. The basic chest gives mostly food, iron and coal. Both tables are listed below.

Tips

Clear the spawners before opening the chests. The Restless Spirits attack from the air, which makes them hard to fight in the narrow shaft, so bring a ranged weapon or fight them where there is room to move. Fight the Decaying Zombies and the Door Knight at the base of the tower, where there is space to retreat.

Visit in daylight if you can. Restless Spirits that can see the sky are removed during the day, so the tower is much safer to loot then. The Dark Tower is another Born in Chaos horror structure that generates in forest and plains biomes.

Obtaining

  • Natural generation: the tower generates in the Overworld in forest and plains biomes. The forest variant is more common than the plains variant.
  • Placing it yourself: the item "Spawn Structures: Lookout Tower" places a copy of the tower. It is listed in the mod's creative tab next to the spawn eggs. The pack has no crafting recipe for it and no loot table that gives it.
  • Chests: the chests inside the tower are the only loot source. Its mobs do not carry tower loot.

Usage

The Lookout Tower item places the tower template at the block you click. The template's origin is the clicked block, so the tower builds upward from that spot. The item does not stack, is fire resistant, and has a 25-tick (1.25 second) cooldown after each use. Entities in the template are placed along with the structure. Placing the tower yourself gives you the same spawners, mobs and chests as a naturally generated one.
