The Highlands is a temperate land biome added by Terralith. It is one of the five "highlands" biomes that Terralith adds, alongside Alpine Highlands, Arid Highlands, Forested Highlands and Temperate Highlands. In Fear Nightfall it is a land biome with ordinary farm animals and a large hostile population drawn from the pack's horror mods, so a player meets both peaceful animals and some of the pack's more dangerous mobs here.
The biome has a temperature of 0.4 and a downfall of 0.4, and it rains here. Its water is blue-green and its fog and sky are pale blue.
Description
The surface is grassy, with stone pillars, gravel patches and scattered trees. Terralith's features for the biome are:
- Trees: mostly pine trees, with spruce trees chosen for about one in five tree placements.
- Stone pillars: columns of stone up to 9 blocks tall, placed on the surface.
- Gravel: disk-shaped gravel patches replace dirt and grass near the surface.
- Plants: short grass, ferns, large ferns, white tulips, alliums, peonies, lilacs, glow lichen, vines, sugar cane, pumpkins, and brown and red mushrooms.
- Water: springs and lakes. Lava lakes also generate underground and on the surface.
The biome plays the cave mood sound about every five minutes of game time when the player is nearby.
Generation
Highlands is one of the temperate land biomes in Terralith's climate range. Fear Nightfall's custom biome table gives each climate cell a share of all biomes whose original mod allows them there, and Highlands covers about 1.38% of the surface land in the pack. Terralith as a whole covers about 31% of the land.
Highlands is not one of the biomes that the pack weights at 6× for horror. It gets the normal weight from the table, so it is less common than the dark forests, swamps and horror caves that the pack emphasises.
Features
The biome adds the following generated features on top of vanilla ore and cave generation:
- Ores: the full set of vanilla ores (coal, iron, copper, gold, redstone, lapis lazuli and diamond, including buried and large diamond veins), along with ore patches of andesite, diorite, granite and tuff. The biome also places sulfur ore from Butchery, Black Argillite and Infected Diamond Ore from Born in Chaos, and Mithril Ore from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks.
- Monster rooms: both the standard and deep monster rooms (dungeons) generate here.
- Amethyst geodes: vanilla geodes are placed underground.
- Freezing top layer: the top layer freezes in cold conditions, so snow can form on exposed surfaces.
Mobs and structures
The biome's monster table has about 50 entries. Its most heavily weighted hostile mobs are vanilla spiders, skeletons, creepers and slimes, followed by zombies and endermen. The rest come mainly from Born in Chaos, the Graveyard mod, Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, Golem Overhaul and Mutant Monsters. Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, so the biome is most dangerous at night. The mob and structure tables are shown below.

- Krampus and Spirit of Chaos from Born in Chaos.
- Dread Hound and Nightmare, which have low weights.
- Mutant Zombie.
Passive animals include sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, ferrets and donkeys. Bats and glow squid also spawn here. In water, Corpse Fish and other fish mobs spawn in addition to the usual fish.
Structures that can generate in Highlands include the Catacombs from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, the Clown Caravan and Dark Tower from Born in Chaos, the Illager Hideout and Manor, and Terralith's fortified villages. The full structure list is in the table above.
Tips
- Carry light and a sword at night. Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, and the biome's monster table is dominated by horror mobs.
- Monster rooms can contain spawners and loot, so check them when digging underground.
- Sugar cane and pumpkins grow here, so a farm near water is a practical base.
