The Mutant Enderman is a boss-scale hostile mob added by Mutant Monsters. It is a much larger and tougher version of the vanilla enderman, with 200 health, a 4.2-block-tall body and a set of attacks that go well beyond melee. It teleports often, screams to hurt and slow nearby mobs, makes copies of itself, and steals and throws blocks. The pack's data classes it as a boss, so it is worth preparing for before engaging it.

Its death releases Endersoul Fragments, and it drops ender pearls and ender eyes. It can be obtained through its spawn egg, and the Chemical X potion can convert a vanilla enderman into a Mutant Enderman.

Spawning

A Mutant Enderman spawns naturally as a hostile monster. Mutant Monsters adds it to the monster spawn lists of 285 biomes, with a spawn group size of 1 (one mutant per spawn). The mod copies the vanilla enderman's spawn cost, and the mutant counts toward the monster cap like any other monster. Its weight in each biome is set by the mutantEndermanSpawnWeight config value, which defaults to 0.05 of the vanilla weight, with a minimum of 1 in the spawn table. The vanilla enderman's spawn weights are kept unchanged, so the mutant is added on top of them rather than replacing them.

Mutant Enderman spawns also pass an extra placement check that succeeds one time in three, on top of the usual monster spawn rules. The table below lists the biomes and weights.

A Mutant Enderman can also be created with the Mutant Enderman Spawn Egg (Mutant Enderman Spawn Egg), which stacks to 64. The mod adds no structures that contain the mutant.

Behavior

The mutant is a melee-focused mob with a set of timed special attacks. Its movement speed is 0.3, its follow range is 96 blocks, and it has full knockback resistance, so hits do not push it back.

Teleporting. The mutant teleports at random. Without a target, it has a 1 in 1600 chance per tick to teleport. With a target, the chance rises to 1 in 800 per tick. It also has a 1 in 10 chance per tick to teleport while it is in water, falling more than 3 blocks, more than 32 blocks from its target, or not pathfinding to its target. Teleports are blocked while another animation (such as a scream or a clone) is playing.

Reacting to damage. The mutant's defenses depend on the source of the damage:

  • Projectile damage (arrows, tridents and similar) is ignored entirely.
  • Melee hits from an entity have a 1 in 6 chance to make the mutant teleport away without taking damage. If it does not teleport, the hit lands, and it then has a 1 in 5 chance to teleport after taking damage (1 in 3 for drowning or suffocation in a wall).
  • Explosion damage, fall damage and damage with no source entity have a 1 in 3 chance to teleport the mutant. If it does not teleport, the damage is blocked.
  • Damage taken during its stare animation ends the stare.

In practice, projectiles and explosions are unreliable against the mutant, and melee combat is the main way to damage it.

Stare. When it has a target, the mutant can enter a stare animation, which plays a sound and holds it in place until the animation ends or it takes damage.

Melee and teleport-smash. The mutant's melee attack deals its attack damage of 7. When it attacks with both hands free, it can instead perform a teleport-smash, which deals 7 damage plus 1 or 3 extra, depending on the target's height relative to the mutant.

Scream. When it has a target within 20 blocks, the mutant has a 1 in 1200 chance per tick to scream (1 in 400 while it is in water or in rain). The scream lasts 165 ticks. At its midpoint it stops rain in the level and hits entities within a 20-block area with 4 points of piercing damage. Mobs struck by the scream are given Slowness IV for 120 ticks, and each may also receive Poison, Weakness, Hunger or Confusion for shorter periods.

Block theft and throwing. The mutant can pick up solid full blocks, which excludes block entities and the blocks in the mutant_enderman_holdable_immune tag. End stone is always allowed. It holds up to two blocks at a time, and its throw attack launches held blocks at its target. Block theft only removes blocks from the world when the mobGriefing game rule is on. With the rule off, the mutant still holds blocks, but the blocks stay in place.

Cloning. The clone attack is the mutant's signature move. It is used when the mutant is attacking a target that is not a wither, it is not holding any blocks, and it has not just been hurt. The mutant creates seven Endersoul Clones around the target, plus one at its own position. See the variants section below.

Death. The death animation lasts 80 ticks. From tick 60, the mutant releases Endersoul Fragments: each tick, there is a 2 in 3 chance that one fragment is spawned. The mutant drops its loot from tick 100 onward.

Drops

The mutant's base loot table is empty. Its drops come from a separate table that is rolled eight times during the death animation (once every 6 ticks, from tick 102 to tick 144). Each roll gives one item from the pool, with an equal chance of an ender pearl or an ender eye. A kill therefore usually yields several ender pearls and ender eyes, and the exact count varies. These rolls only happen when the doMobLoot game rule is on.

The Endersoul Fragments released during the mutant's death are a separate effect; they are listed under the variants and related items below.

Mutant Enderman

No item drops.

Variants

The mutant's clone attack produces Endersoul Clones, its death releases Endersoul Fragments, and its throw attack launches Throwable Blocks. These entities are described below.

  • Endersoul Clone: a hostile copy of the mutant that appears in a group of eight when the mutant uses its clone attack. A clone teleports after it hits a target, and it heals 2 health for each hit that lands. Clones take the mutant's maximum health.
  • Endersoul Fragment: a short-lived explosive that lasts 20 to 39 ticks. It explodes when it is hurt or when its timer runs out, and the explosion damages nearby entities. Fragments that are collected or tamed do not explode. The mod caps Endersoul Fragments at 128 per level. Fragments are the material used to repair the Endersoul Hand (see below).
  • Throwable Block: the projectile that the mutant throws when it uses its throw attack. It is a 1-by-1 block entity that flies toward its target.
MobHealthDamageArmorSpeedSizeType
Mutant Enderman200.07.00.31.2×4.2Boss
Endersoul Clone1.01.00.30.6×2.9Hostile
  • Endersoul Hand (Endersoul Hand): an epic-rarity teleport tool with 240 durability. Using it teleports the player up to 256 blocks. Each successful teleport costs 4 durability and starts a 200-tick cooldown. Tossing an ender eye, or a damaged Endersoul Hand, within 8 blocks of the player's own Endersoul Fragments consumes them and repairs the hand (60 durability per fragment, or a new hand is created).
  • Mutant Enderman Spawn Egg (Mutant Enderman Spawn Egg): spawns a Mutant Enderman.
  • Chemical X: a potion brewed from a Thick potion and an Endersoul Hand, a Hulk Hammer, a Creeper Shard or a Mutant Skeleton Skull. Drinking or throwing it spawns a Skull Spirit on eligible nearby mobs. The spirit then has a 3 in 4 chance to convert a vanilla enderman into a Mutant Enderman.
  • Ender pearls and ender eyes: the mutant's regular drops (see the Drops section above).

Tips

  • Use melee. Arrows and other projectiles do nothing to the mutant, and explosions and falls rarely hurt it. A sword or an axe is the practical weapon.
  • Stay on dry, flat ground. The mutant teleports whenever it is in water or falls more than 3 blocks, so fighting in water or at a cliff edge makes the fight unpredictable.
  • Expect the scream. The scream is more frequent in water and in rain, and it hurts anything near the mutant. Stay out of its 20-block range when it begins to scream.
  • Kill the clones quickly. Each clone teleports around its target and heals when it hits, so clearing them before pushing the mutant prevents them from prolonging the fight.
  • Protect your blocks. The mutant steals blocks from the area around it. Turn off mobGriefing if you want the mutant to leave the terrain alone.
  • Collect the fragments. Collected Endersoul Fragments do not explode, so gather them before they time out and detonate.
