Frosted Caves is an underground overworld biome added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. Its cave walls, floors and ceilings are covered in ice, icicles hang from the ceilings, and the biome has a hostile mob list that includes the mod's Ice Cube. It is the cold counterpart of Lost Caves, also added by the mod. Players meet it while mining into the cold part of the underground.

The biome is a cold underground biome. Its precipitation is snow, and it takes up a substantial part of the cave layer in cold areas, while the surface almost never shows it.

Description

Frosted Caves is an ice-covered cave. Ice patches and ice sheets appear on the floor and ceiling, large and small icicles hang from the ceiling, and frost lilies grow in the biome. The biome sets its own colours: the water is blue-teal (#3f76e4), the fog is pale blue (#c0d8ff) and the sky colour is #7fa1ff, although the sky is not visible from underground.

The ice is not a single layer. Frozen surfaces spread: the Creeping Ice sheets slowly grow onto neighbouring supporting faces, so an ice patch left alone over time covers more of the cave.

Generation

Frosted Caves generates underground in cold regions of the overworld. The mod's placement takes this cold underground band from vanilla Dripstone Caves and gives it to Frosted Caves. It needs a very cold climate and a depth below the surface, so it is not a surface biome. The surface share is 0.02% of land. Underground, at y = -30, it makes up about 12.76% of the cave layer in its climate zone.

Fear Nightfall does not put Frosted Caves in its list of biomes weighted 6 times. That weighting applies to Frostfire Caves, a separate cave biome.

Features

  • Icicles. Icicles are dripstone-style blocks in small, large, large tilted and cluster forms. An icicle that loses its support falls as a falling icicle. The falling icicle uses its own damage type, which bypasses shields and damages helmets. An icicle tip can drip water or lava into a cauldron placed below it. Each block has a 1.1% chance per random tick to start drips.
  • Ice patches and ice sheets. Ice patches and ice ceilings are placed through the cave. Entities standing on Creeping Ice move with ice friction. Creeping Ice has no collision, and it glows when it touches ore blocks. See Frost Lily, Ice Sheet and Rare Ice for the block details.
  • Enchanted Ice. Enchanted Ice is a glowing ice block that requires a stone tool. It drops the block only with Silk Touch. Without Silk Touch, breaking it drops 15 to 54 experience. The Frost Lily, Ice Sheet and Rare Ice page lists the full stats.
  • Frost lilies. Frost lilies break instantly and emit light level 10.
  • Ores and other features. Frosted Caves uses the vanilla underground ore set and has no biome-specific ores. Born in Chaos and Butchery add their own ore features here, including infected diamond ore, black argillite and sulfur ore. Supplementaries adds cave urns and wild flax.
  • Lava. The mod replaces lava aquifers with water inside this biome. Underground lava pools that would form in the biome become water, and the lava level stays the same.
  • Frost potions and tipped arrows. Frost and Strong Frost splash potions, and Frost tipped arrows, place Creeping Ice on impact. Frost places ice in a radius of 3 blocks. Strong Frost places it in a radius of 4 blocks. Splash potions do nothing in ultrawarm dimensions.
  • Frost potions. The Frost effect is harmful and instant. It sets the target's freeze counter to at least 200 times its level, adds 100 times its level to the current counter, and caps the counter at 600 times its level. Spectators and players on peaceful difficulty are not affected. Frost is brewed from Awkward potion and Frost Lily. Strong Frost is brewed from Frost and Glowstone Dust. Fire Resistance and Fermented Spider Eye brew Frost, and Frost and Fermented Spider Eye brew Fire Resistance.
  • Crossbows. Icicles can be loaded as ammunition in any crossbow. An icicle has a base damage of 1.5.

Mobs and structures

Hostile mobs in Frosted Caves include the Ice Cube, the vanilla spider, zombie, skeleton, stray and creeper, and many horror mobs from other mods such as Revenant, Necromancer and Dread Hound. The spawn table below lists every entry and its weight.

The Ice Cube is a hostile mob added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. It has 32 maximum health and 3 attack damage. It leaps at targets and attacks in melee. A melee hit adds 200 freeze ticks to the target. It is immune to fall damage and to freezing. It avoids magma cubes and blazes.

Structures in this biome include the monster room, the deep monster room, the Ice Spider Den from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, and the mineshaft. The structure table below lists every structure the biome can generate.

Tips

  • Carry a stone pickaxe or better before mining. Enchanted Ice needs a stone tool to break.
  • Stand clear of the ceiling when an icicle is unsupported. A falling icicle hits through shields, so raising a shield does not protect you.
  • Creeping Ice is slippery and spreads. Move carefully over ice sheets.
  • Ice Cube hits freeze you, so keep your distance from it when it is leaping.
  • Frost splash potions and Frost arrows leave ice that spreads outward from the impact point. Stay out of the radius if you want to keep your route clear.
