Ancient Sand and Sandstone is a family of sand, sandstone and building blocks added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. Ancient Sand is a falling block, and Ancient Sandstone is made from it. The family includes the base Ancient Sandstone with its cut, chiseled, smooth, layered and brittle forms, plus stairs, slabs and walls. A second set of sandstone blocks follows the vanilla Sandstone and Red Sandstone types: Layered Sandstone, Brittle Sandstone, Layered Red Sandstone and Brittle Red Sandstone.
Ancient Sand and Ancient Sandstone are the main materials of the Lost Caves biome, and the Sand Snapper buries its loot in Ancient Sand. Most blocks in the family have a hardness of 0.8, the same as vanilla sandstone. The brittle variants and Ancient Sand have a hardness of 0.5.
Obtaining
Ancient Sand and Ancient Sandstone generate naturally in Lost Caves, an underground biome in the hot climate zone. The Lost Caves floor is replaced with Ancient Sand near the surface and Ancient Sandstone beneath it. Layered Ancient Sandstone is placed on cave walls and ceilings, Brittle Ancient Sandstone forms in patches on the ceiling, and Layered Sandstone pillars stand in the biome.
Ancient Sand is mined with a shovel. The Ancient Sandstone blocks and the other sandstone variants are mined with a pickaxe.
The Sand Snapper, a mob of the same biome, buries an item that it carries under itself when it stands on Ancient Sand. The block becomes Suspicious Ancient Sand, and the item is stored inside it. The item comes from the Sand Snapper's archaeology table, which holds an hourglass or clock pottery sherd, an Ancient Armor Trim smithing template, a brick, an emerald and a stick, each with equal weight.

Stonecutter · StonecuttingAncient Sandstone is crafted from four Ancient Sand in a 2×2 grid. Brittle Ancient Sandstone is crafted from one Ancient Sandstone and one Ancient Sand. Brittle Sandstone and Brittle Red Sandstone are crafted from one block of the matching sandstone and one matching sand. Most of the Ancient Sandstone shapes can also be cut from a single block in the Stonecutter.
Smelting
Smelting Ancient Sand gives glass in 200 ticks (10 seconds) and 0.1 experience. Smelting Ancient Sandstone gives Smooth Ancient Sandstone with the same time and experience.
Usage
Brushing Suspicious Ancient Sand
Suspicious Ancient Sand is brushed with the vanilla Brush. It takes ten successful brushes to finish. A brush counts only if at least 10 ticks have passed since the previous counted brush. If no brush hits the block for 40 ticks, the progress resets. Each counted brush damages the brush by 1 durability. When the tenth brush completes, the stored item drops in the direction the block was hit, and the block becomes plain Ancient Sand.

Ancient Sand is also the ingredient for TNT, which is crafted with gunpowder. Ancient Sandstone is an ingredient of the Ancient Armor Trim smithing template, which is crafted from a diamond, an Ancient Sandstone and the template item. The template applies the ancient armor trim pattern to armor.
Mechanics
- Ancient Sand falls like vanilla sand when it has no support below it. It is in the vanilla sand tag, so it counts as sand for any recipe or mechanic that reads that tag.
- Endermen can pick up Ancient Sand.
- Glow lichen placed by the Lost Caves biome grows on Ancient Sand, Layered Ancient Sandstone and Ancient Sandstone.
- The Ancient Sandstone stairs, slabs and walls are in the vanilla stairs, slabs and walls tags. Any vanilla recipe that uses those tags accepts these blocks.
- The sandstone blocks are in the common sandstone tags, so mods that read those tags count them as sandstone.
