The Ice Cube is a hostile mob added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. It lives only in the underground Frosted Caves biome, where it hunts players by leaping and then striking in melee. Each successful hit also freezes the target. It has no ranged attack, and it drops no items.

Spawning

Ice Cubes spawn naturally only in Frosted Caves, as part of that biome's monster spawn list. They have a spawn weight of 100 and spawn in groups of 2 to 4. Other monsters in the same biome share the monster cap: spiders, zombies, strays, skeletons, creepers, endermen, a witch and a zombie villager. A crowded cave can therefore reach the cap before every Ice Cube has spawned.

Ice Cubes do not spawn in other biomes, and they are not placed in structures. A Spawn Egg for the Ice Cube is listed in the "YUNG's Cave Biomes" creative tab.

Behavior

The Ice Cube is a monster with 32 maximum health (16 hearts), 2 armour, 3 attack damage and a movement speed of 0.2. Its follow range is 35 blocks. Its body measures 1.6 blocks wide and 1.5 blocks tall.

Its movement is built around jumping rather than walking:

  • Targeting. It targets the nearest player within its follow range. It also turns hostile toward any player that hurts it.
  • Leaping. When it is on the ground and within about 4 blocks of its target, it can leap toward the target. The leap sets a forward and upward velocity and keeps the Ice Cube in a leaping state for up to 15 ticks. A leap cannot start while it is airborne.
  • Melee and touch. Once it is close, the Ice Cube attacks with a melee strike for 3 damage. Touching a player deals the same damage, so standing next to one is dangerous.
  • Freeze on hit. Every successful hit adds 200 freeze ticks to the target. Repeated hits freeze a player quickly, and freezing slows movement and causes damage over time.
  • Fall immunity. The Ice Cube takes no fall damage, so it can drop from ledges without harm.
  • Freeze immunity. The Ice Cube cannot be frozen. It is listed in the vanilla freeze-immune entity tag.
  • Avoidance. It runs from magma cubes and blazes when they come within 6 blocks.
  • Ice trail. As it moves, it places ice sheets in the empty blocks around its feet, so the cave floor becomes slippery where it has passed.

The Ice Cube has no ranged attack, so distance is the main defence. Its leaps cover a short arc, which makes them easier to dodge when there is room to sidestep. In a narrow tunnel, however, a group can corner a player quickly, and each hit adds to the freeze timer.

Drops

The Ice Cube has no loot table of its own, so it drops no items when it dies. It gives 12 experience points on death.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Fight Ice Cubes in open space when possible, so their leaps can be sidestepped.
  • Keep moving between hits. Standing still next to an Ice Cube means repeated touch attacks and a growing freeze timer.
  • Do not expect the freeze to finish a fight. It is a debuff that slows you, not a separate source of damage.
  • Plan a retreat before moving across a floor that an Ice Cube has trailed with ice sheets.
  • Dropping onto an Ice Cube from above does not hurt it, because it takes no fall damage. Melee or ranged attacks are the only way to damage it.
