The Frost Lily, Creeping Ice, Enchanted Ice and Icicle are four ice-themed blocks added by YUNG's Cave Biomes. They belong to the mod's cold underground biome, Frosted Caves, and they also appear through potions and crossbows. Creeping Ice makes the ground slippery, and Icicles fall from cave ceilings when their support is removed, so both can catch an unwary player. Enchanted Ice is the hardest of the four and always glows. The Frost Lily is the only one used as a brewing ingredient.

None of the four blocks can be crafted, traded or found in chest loot. They are obtained only from world generation, from the effects of Frost potions and arrows, or by breaking them.

Obtaining

Frost Lily generates only in Frosted Caves. The placed feature makes 20 attempts per chunk at any height from the bottom of the world to Y 256. Each attempt scans downward through air or water for up to 12 blocks and stops on an ice block or a snow block, then places the lily just above it. A lily can therefore sit on the water surface of a cave pool or on air above an ice floor. Breaking a Frost Lily drops the block itself, and it survives explosions. It has a hardness of 0, so it breaks instantly with any tool.

Enchanted Ice comes only from large icicles in Frosted Caves. Their columns are built from packed ice. Each column has a chance to contain Enchanted Ice:

Feature Chance that a column contains Enchanted Ice
Large icicle 40%
Large tilted icicle 40%
Small icicle 10%

A column that is less than 6 blocks tall at its centre never contains Enchanted Ice. When it does, one Enchanted Ice block sits on the centre line of the column, at about 45% of its height from the base. Blocks above roughly a third of the column's height are ice rather than packed ice.

Creeping Ice is generated as a surface layer in Frosted Caves by two ice sheet replace features, each placed 250 times with a search range of 8 blocks. It is also created in the open by Frost splash potions and Frost-tipped arrows (see the Usage section). It has no loot table, so breaking it drops nothing.

Icicle generates in Frosted Caves in three forms: large icicles (21 to 48 placements), tilted large icicles (the same count) and icicle clusters (144 to 216 placements). Icicles drop themselves when broken.

Usage

Frost Lily

The Frost Lily is a small plant that can be waterlogged when it sits in water. It emits light level 10. Its main use is brewing. An Awkward Potion brewed with a Frost Lily gives the Frost potion. Frost plus Fermented Spider Eye gives Fire Resistance, and Frost plus Glowstone Dust gives Strong Frost.

The Frost effect is harmful and instant. It raises the target's freeze counter by a minimum of 200 ticks times its level (the Frost potion is level 1, Strong Frost is level 2). The total is capped at 600 ticks times the level. Spectators and players on peaceful difficulty are not affected. The Ice Cube mob uses the same counter, adding 200 freeze ticks on every melee hit.

Creeping Ice

Creeping Ice is a thin, non-solid layer. It has no collision, so it does not block movement, but any entity standing on it moves with ice friction (0.98) in any dimension. It has a hardness of 0.3 and emits light level 4 only while it is next to an ore block in the creeping_ice_glows_on tag, which includes the ore tags of common mod loaders.

Creeping Ice spreads through random ticks. Each random tick checks block light with a 25% chance and attempts to spread with a 5% chance, growing onto neighbouring supporting faces. Its growth is slow, so a frozen floor or ceiling takes a long time to fill in.

Frost items place Creeping Ice directly:

  • A Frost splash potion places it in a sphere of radius 3 on impact. A Strong Frost splash potion places it in a sphere of radius 4.
  • A tipped arrow with the Frost effect places it at the block or entity it hits.
  • Creeping Ice only replaces air, water and blocks that are replaceable. The splash potion effect is skipped in ultrawarm dimensions such as the Nether.

Enchanted Ice

Enchanted Ice has a hardness of 3 and requires at least a stone pickaxe. It emits light level 11 and plays an ambient glow sound. Faces between Enchanted Ice and vanilla ice blocks are hidden, so a wall of the two renders as one solid surface. Silk Touch drops the block itself. Without Silk Touch the block drops nothing and gives 15 to 54 experience points. Breaking Enchanted Ice grants the "Breaking the Ice" advancement.

Icicle

Icicles are pointed blocks in four thicknesses: tip, middle, frustum and base. They use the same thickness states as pointed dripstone. An icicle that loses its support falls as a falling icicle entity. The falling icicle deals damage with its own damage type, which bypasses shields and damages helmets. Shields offer no protection against a collapsing icicle, and the helmet takes durability damage.

Projectiles destroy icicles at a speed of 0.4. This is lower than the speed of 0.6 needed for pointed dripstone. A crossbow can load icicles as ammunition. This applies to every crossbow in the game, not only those found in structures. An icicle fired from a crossbow deals a base damage of 1.5.

The tip of an icicle can drip water or lava. Dripping icicles fill a cauldron placed under them. The top of an icicle column has about a 1.1% chance per random tick to spawn a drip.

Items

  • Frost Lily (stacks to 16): a waterlogging plant that grows on ice and snow. It is the only brewing ingredient in this group.
  • Creeping Ice (stacks to 64): a slippery surface layer that spreads slowly and is created by Frost potions and arrows.
  • Enchanted Ice (stacks to 64): the hardest of the four blocks and the glowing core of some large icicles.
  • Icicle (stacks to 64): a falling hazard that bypasses shields, and a crossbow ammunition type.

Tips

  • Use Silk Touch on Enchanted Ice if you want the block itself rather than experience points.
  • Creeping Ice makes it hard to stop on a slope. Place a block of stone or another non-ice block before you cross a frozen floor.
  • Stay clear of icicles when you mine under a ceiling in Frosted Caves. A falling icicle ignores your shield, so do not rely on blocking it.
