Potions and Brewing

From the Fear Nightfall wiki · Fear Nightfall

Potions and Brewing covers every modded potion in Fear Nightfall and the brewing recipes that make them. Most of the pack's potions are made in a brewing stand from a vanilla Awkward Potion base and one ingredient, as in vanilla. Several mods add their own potions on top of that base. Some, such as the elixirs of Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, are made in a separate cauldron, and the Hexerei and Iron's cauldrons hold potion fluid rather than bottled potions. The mods that add potions are Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks, Born in Chaos, Critters and Companions, Mutant Monsters, YUNG's Cave Biomes, Butchery, Jaden's Nether Expansion and Hexerei. Potions matter in the pack because the horror structures and mobs apply harmful effects that a prepared player can counter, and because many of the pack's structures place potions in their brewing stands and chests.

Brewing basics

The usual route to a modded potion is a vanilla Awkward Potion, made by brewing a Water Bottle with a nether wart. Adding one ingredient to the Awkward Potion gives the finished potion, and adding a second ingredient, such as glowstone dust or redstone, changes its level or duration in the same way as vanilla. Several recipes use a bottle of a different base, as noted in the sections below.

The Alchemist Cauldron and the Mixing Cauldron work differently. The Alchemist Cauldron holds a potion fluid and brews when it holds any fluid, so a potion is put into it as a fluid and bottled again later (see Alchemist Cauldron and Elixirs). The Mixing Cauldron is Hexerei's general crafting station, and it can hold potion fluid for recipes such as the candle dipper (see Mixing Cauldron and Candles and Candle Dipper).

When the allowCauldronBrewing config is on, which is the default, the Alchemist Cauldron also accepts vanilla brewing ingredients. The Alchemist Cauldron page has the details.

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks

Iron's adds the Instant Mana potions, which restore mana when drunk. Each level is made from the one before it:

  • Instant Mana I: Awkward Potion with an Arcane Essence.
  • Instant Mana II: Instant Mana I with glowstone dust.
  • Instant Mana III: Instant Mana II with an amethyst shard.
  • Instant Mana IV: Instant Mana III with an amethyst cluster.

The Instant Mana effect restores 25 mana per level plus 5% of maximum mana per level when it is applied. It is an instant effect and has no duration (see Iron's Spellbooks Effects).

Iron's elixirs and tinctures, including Oakskin, Invisibility, Evasion and the Greater Potion of Healing, are made in the Alchemist Cauldron rather than in a brewing stand. Their recipes are listed on Alchemist Cauldron and Elixirs.

Born in Chaos

Born in Chaos adds the largest set of brewed potions in the pack. Most of its potions are made from an Awkward Potion and one ingredient, and its five elixirs need a Chaos Component together with a second ingredient.

Potion Made from
Magical Depletion Awkward Potion and a Nightmare Claw
Intoxication Awkward Potion and an Intoxicating Decoction
Stimulating Awkward Potion and a Stimulating Decoction
Living Cocoon Awkward Potion and a Spider Mandible
Long Water Breathing Awkward Potion and a Sea Terror Eye
Elixir of Vampirism Chaos Component and a Lifestealer Bone
Elixir of Wither Resistance Chaos Component and a Nightmare Claw
Elixir of Insect Protection Chaos Component and a Bloody Gadfly Eye
Elixir of Ice Barrier Chaos Component and a Permafrost Shard
Elixir of Rampage Chaos Component and a Fang of the Hound Leader

The Chaos Component is made by brewing a Seed of Chaos in a water bottle. A Spiritual Dust in a water bottle makes a Bottle of Magical Energy, which removes Magic Depletion when it is drunk. The decoctions, elixirs and bombs are covered on Elixirs, Decoctions and Bombs, and the effects they apply are covered on Born in Chaos Effects.

Critters and Companions

Critters and Companions adds three Resistance potions to vanilla brewing, using the Snail Slime Bottle from the Snail:

  • Resistance, made from an Awkward Potion and a Snail Slime Bottle, lasts 3 minutes.
  • Strong Resistance, made from Resistance and glowstone dust, is level II and lasts 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • Long Resistance, made from Resistance and redstone, lasts 8 minutes.

Mutant Monsters

Mutant Monsters adds Chemical X, a harmful instant effect that turns the creature it hits into a mutant (see Chemical X). It is brewed from a Thick Potion with an Endersoul Hand, a Creeper Shard or a Mutant Skeleton Skull. Chemical X can be drunk, splashed, made lingering or used as a tipped arrow. Mutants made this way are persistent, so they stay in the world.

YUNG's Cave Biomes

YUNG's Cave Biomes adds Frost and Strong Frost potions, which freeze the entities they hit and place Creeping Ice on impact (see Frost Lily, Ice Sheet and Rare Ice). The Frost Lily is the ingredient that starts them:

  • Frost: Awkward Potion with a Frost Lily.
  • Strong Frost: Frost with glowstone dust.
  • Fire Resistance and Frost can be converted into each other with a Fermented Spider Eye.

Butchery

Butchery adds six brewing recipes. Most use the Awkward Potion as a base:

  • Awkward Potion with a Bat Wing or Bee Wings makes Slow Falling.
  • Awkward Potion with a Pufferfish Spike makes Poison.
  • A Glass Bottle with a Poison Sac makes a Strong Poison bottle.
  • Water with Sulfur makes a bottle of Sulfuric Acid.

The Magic Wishbone is also brewed, from a Wishbone and a nether star, and breaking it inside a base is risky.

Jaden's Nether Expansion

Jaden's Nether Expansion adds Antidotes, which are drinkable potions and thrown Grenade Antidotes. Each antidote gives an immunity effect that cancels the matching harmful effect when it is applied. The antidotes are brewed in a brewing stand from a Water Bottle with a warped wart, which makes an Awkward Antidote, and then from the Awkward Antidote with one more ingredient. Adding gunpowder turns an antidote into a Grenade Antidote. The brewing recipes need the Elysium API mod to be present. The full list of antidotes, their durations and the immunity rules are on Antidotes.

Other mods

  • Aquaculture adds two brewing recipes: a Jellyfish makes a Poison start mix, and a Leech makes a Healing start mix (see Exotic Fish).
  • Hexerei uses potions as fluid in its cauldrons. A potion placed in the Mixing Cauldron adds 250 mB of that potion's fluid, and some recipes use it, such as the Entangled Coffer and the Replacer Satchel.

Potions in the world

Potions turn up in the pack's structures as brewing stand contents and chest loot. The brewing stand contents are the most reliable source.

Potions and mobs

Several mobs drink or throw potions, and some are weak to specific ones.

  • The Apothecarist throws splash potions at targets within 10 blocks, and it sells potions and elixirs.
  • The Dead King is damaged by healing potions and healed by harm effects, so healing potions should not be used in that fight.
  • The Zombie Clown's hits apply Intoxication, which reduces movement and attack speed. A shield blocks the effect.
  • The Mother Spider's melee attacks apply Living Cocoon and poison to a target that is not blocking.

Pack notes

  • Born in Chaos spawns only in the Overworld in Fear Nightfall, so its potions and the effects they produce are met in the Overworld. Its mobs and items are not found in the Nether or the End.
  • The pack adds loot from Iron's Spells, Butchery and Nether Expansion to the mapped chests of the structure mods, which includes the potions and elixirs listed above (see Changes to Vanilla).
  • Potions are a common way to deal with the pack's horror mobs. Water potions also exorcise Apparitions, and a thrown water potion removes one layer of Ash.

Using potions

Bamboo Spikes can be tipped with a lingering potion. The potion's effect is applied to any creature that touches the spike, and it stays on the spike until its charges run out or it is washed with soap.

Candles and Candle Dipper also take potion fluid. Dipping a candle in potion fluid makes an infused candle that carries the potion's effect, which is one of the main uses of potion fluid outside the brewing stand.
