The Aquaculture mod (Aquaculture 2, version 2.7.21) is a fishing and aquatic-content add-on for Fear Nightfall. It adds 29 fish species, a fishing system of its own with rods, hooks, bait and bobbers, a Tackle Box, a Worm Farm, fillet knives, loot boxes, fish mounts, three turtles and a Neptunium metal tier with tools and armour that have bonuses underwater. A player cares about it as a second fishing system beside Tide, as the source of the Neptunium gear, and as a source of fish fillets, sushi and turtle ingredients.
Overview
Aquaculture is a medium-sized content mod rather than a total overhaul. It adds no worldgen features, structures, ores, trees, dimensions, enchantments, mob effects, damage types or villager trades. Its additions are fish, fishing equipment, a few containers, food, and one tool and armour set. Its fish spawn in natural water in many biomes, and its fishing loot is injected into the global fishing table, so every vanilla fishing rod in the pack can catch them. There are no hostile mobs and no bosses in the mod.
In Fear Nightfall the mod runs alongside Tide, which has its own fishing rods, hooks and the Angling Table. Aquaculture's rods do not use the Angling Table; they hold their four pieces of tackle in fixed slots. The general fishing rules of the pack are described on Fishing and Tide Fishing. The companion mod Aquaculture Delight is a separate mod with its own dishes.

Mechanics
Casting and bites
A rod has four slots: the hook, the bait, the fishing line and the bobber. Casting spawns an Aquaculture bobber, which is a separate entity from the vanilla fishing hook. Luck comes from the Luck enchantment plus the hook's luck, which is +1 for the Gold and Nether Star hooks. Lure speed is the Lure enchantment times 20, plus 1 per bait, plus 100 for the Neptunium rod. It is capped at 500. Vanilla lure and hook timers are kept.
A Redstone hook gives a catch window of 35 to 70 ticks. Other hooks use a nibble window of 20 to 40 ticks.
Hooks
- Light: launch velocity is multiplied by (1.5, 1, 1.5), so the cast travels further.
- Heavy: launch velocity is multiplied by (0.6, 0.15, 0.6), so the cast is shorter.
- Note: plays an alert sound as a fish approaches.
- Double: a catch has a 10% chance to roll the loot table again and yield a second item.
- Nether Star: works in water, and in lava only if the separate aq2lava mod is loaded.
Loot and durability
A normal catch rolls the vanilla fishing loot table, which includes the Aquaculture entries described under Changes to vanilla below. Lava catches roll tables that are empty, so fishing in lava yields nothing. Fishing in an unloaded chunk also yields nothing.
Each retrieve costs rod durability: 3 for pulling an item entity, 5 for pulling a mob, 1 for a successful catch and 2 if the bobber lands on the ground. The Iron Hook skips the cost on 20% of retrieves. The Diamond and Nether Star hooks skip it on 50%.
Each successful catch consumes one bait. The bait's durability is used first. Creative players are not charged bait.
Fish spawns
Aquaculture fish spawn in surface water. Each species has its own list of biomes, a spawn weight from 1 to 26 and a group size of 1 to 8. Brown and Red Shrooma have the highest weight of 26 in mushroom biomes. Tuna have weight 1 in ocean and beach biomes. The freshwater species are added to almost every biome that is not in the Nether, the End or a void biome, except for the biomes they exclude. The Nether, the End and void biomes are never used.
Turtles spawn on land. The Box Turtle spawns in swamp biomes with weight 11 and group size 1 to 2. The Arrau Turtle spawns in jungle biomes with weight 10 and group size 1 to 2. The Starshell Turtle spawns in biomes with the c:is_twilight tag, with weight 6 and group size 1 to 2.
Fish weight
Fish weight is a tooltip and a fishing-competition feature. It is off by default. When it is on, each species with a set range receives a random weight in pounds. Ranges run from 0.01 to 1,508 lb. Tuna range from 30 to 1,508 lb, Atlantic Halibut from 50 to 710 lb, and Atlantic Cod from 10 to 211 lb. A fish is labelled juvenile at up to 10% of its maximum, small at 10 to 20%, large at 80 to 90%, and massive at 90% or more.
Fillets and food
A fish crafted with a fillet knife yields fillets. Yield depends on the species: Atlantic Halibut 14, Pacific Halibut 12, Capitaine 10, Arapaima 10, Tuna 10, Atlantic Cod 6 and Catfish 6. Minnow, Brown and Red Shrooma, Jellyfish and Goldfish yield none. Neptunium knives add 25% more fillets and do not lose durability. Raw fillets restore 1 hunger, cooked fillets 3 and sushi 4. Algae restores 1 hunger and is eaten quickly.
Tackle Box
The Tackle Box has 17 slots. Slot 0 accepts only Aquaculture rods. The other slots accept hooks, bait, fishing line, bobbers and other Tackle Boxes. Shift-right-clicking picks the box up with its contents. The box sends a redstone comparator signal based on what it holds.
Worm Farm
The Worm Farm is a composter with eight fill levels. Right-clicking it with a compostable item adds a level. A full farm yields a Worm when a hopper extracts from it. Right-clicking it with an empty hand drops one Worm and removes one level.
Neptunium gear
Neptunium armour has armour toughness 2 and no knockback resistance. The tools have a durability of 1,796, a mining speed of 8.5 and an attack bonus of 3.5. Armour defence is 3 for the helmet, 8 for the chestplate, 6 for the leggings and 3 for the boots. The effects depend on whether the wearer's eyes are underwater:
- Helmet: night vision.
- Chestplate: water breathing.
- Leggings: cancel gravity underwater, unless the wearer is crouching, jumping, swimming or spectating.
- Boots: +150% swim speed, on land or in water.
- Pickaxe and shovel: block-breaking speed multiplied by 25 underwater.
- Sword and axe: damage multiplied by 1.5 underwater.
- Hoe: tills into Aquaculture farmland, which is moist farmland.
- Bow: fires Water Arrows and Spectral Water Arrows.
- Rod: +100 lure speed.
Fish mounts
A fish mount is a wall-mounted entity that holds one fish from the fish mount tag. Hitting a mount removes the fish and plays a sound. The mount drops itself when it is broken or takes non-explosion damage.
Loot boxes
Right-clicking a loot box gives one item from its loot table. The Box has 50 weighted entries, mostly vanilla junk. The Lockbox has 12 entries of iron, gold, redstone and books. The Treasure Chest has 4 entries of iron, gold, diamond and emerald. Neptune's Bounty is a chest-type container with 15 entries that include Neptunium items and a junk subtable.
Message In A Bottle
A bottle shows a random message from the mod's translation keys. A known bug means the bottle can show the raw key aquaculture.message0 instead of text. With the default setting of 29 messages, this happens for about 1 in 30 bottles.
Changes to vanilla
- Fishing loot: the mod adds fish with weight 85, junk with weight 10 and, if enabled, Neptune's Bounty loot with weight 1 by default, to the vanilla fishing table. The Neptune's Bounty entry only applies when the hook is in open water. Vanilla rods catch Aquaculture fish and junk, not only Aquaculture rods.
- Pets: cats and ocelots accept Aquaculture fish as food.
- Schooling: Aquaculture fish school only with fish of their own species.
- Smelting and crafting: Fish Bones produce 3 Bone Meal, Red and Brown Shrooma produce 5 Red or Brown Mushroom, Driftwood produces 4 Oak Planks, Tin Can produces 7 Iron Nuggets, Gold Fish produces a Gold Nugget, and Jellyfish smelt into a Slime Ball.
- Compost: Cod is in the compostable data map with chance 0.5, and Salmon, Tropical Fish and Pufferfish with chance 0.05.
- Farmland: villagers treat Aquaculture farmland as farmland.
- Brewing: Jellyfish is a Poison start mix and Leech is a Healing start mix.
- Fuel: the Wooden Fillet Knife burns for 150 ticks and Driftwood for 600 ticks.
- Turtles do not drown in water.
- Bow: the Neptunium Bow fires Aquaculture water arrows in place of vanilla arrows.
- Hoe: only the Neptunium hoe makes Aquaculture farmland. Vanilla hoes are unchanged.
In Fear Nightfall
The pack's change notes list no Aquaculture-specific changes. The server's configuration of the mod uses the defaults:
- fish weight is off;
- Message In A Bottle has 29 messages;
- fillet recipes are shown in JEI;
- Neptunium items, Neptunium armour and Neptune's Bounty loot are enabled;
- the Neptunium loot weight is 1.
No Aquaculture mob is hostile, so the mod adds no threats to the pack's night-time horror content. The one horror-relevant effect is the Neptunium helmet's night vision, which works underwater. The pack does not include Twilight Forest, so the Starshell Turtle is not expected to spawn naturally in Fear Nightfall.
Freshwater fish spawn in most biomes, including the pack's modded biomes, because their spawn lists exclude biomes rather than naming them.
