Hooks are the fishing rod attachments that control how a cast behaves and which catches a rod can reach. Two mods in the pack add them. Aquaculture 2 adds nine hook types, all of which fit the hook slot of an Aquaculture fishing rod and change casting distance, luck, bite timing, durability wear and the number of catches. Tide adds six hook types, which unlock or alter fishing in lava and the void and change which fish can be caught in a given water temperature or time of day. Most Aquaculture hook types are upgrades crafted from the basic Iron Hook.
Neither mod places hooks in loot tables, mob drops or villager trades, so crafting is the only source.
Obtaining
Every hook is crafted at a crafting table. The recipes are listed below. Aquaculture hooks form an upgrade chain: every Aquaculture hook except the Iron Hook itself uses an Iron Hook as an ingredient, either directly or through another hook. Tide hooks are crafted from iron ingots, nuggets and a few specialised items.

Usage
The two families work differently and are described separately below.
Aquaculture hooks
Aquaculture rods (see Fishing Rods) have four slots, and slot 0 holds the hook. Casting spawns an Aquaculture bobber, not the vanilla one. A Tackle Box can also store hooks. Each hook changes one or more of the following:
- Luck. The Gold Hook gives +1 luck and the Nether Star Hook gives +1 luck. Luck from the Luck of the Sea enchantment and from the hook is added together.
- Casting distance. The Light Hook casts further. It multiplies the launch velocity by 1.5 on the X and Z axes and leaves the vertical component unchanged. The Heavy Hook casts shorter. It multiplies the launch velocity by 0.6 on the X and Z axes and by 0.15 on the vertical axis.
- Bite window. The Redstone Hook gives the player 35–70 ticks to reel in a fish after the bite. Without a catch window, the bite window is 20–40 ticks, while the vanilla lure and hook timers are kept.
- Alerts. The Note Hook plays an alert sound when a fish approaches.
- Extra catches. The Double Hook gives a 10% chance to roll the loot table a second time and spawn a second catch for the same cast.
- Durability. Each retrieve costs rod durability: 3 when pulling an item entity, 5 when pulling a mob, 1 on a catch, and 2 if the bobber lands on the ground. The Iron Hook uses durability on 80% of retrieves, so it skips the cost on 20%. The Diamond Hook and the Nether Star Hook use durability on 50% of retrieves.
The Nether Star Hook works in water. It works in lava only when the optional aq2lava mod is loaded. Aquaculture's own lava and Nether fishing loot tables are empty, so lava fishing does nothing without that mod. aq2lava is not part of Fear Nightfall, so in this pack the Nether Star Hook is a water-only hook and Aquaculture rods catch nothing in lava.
The Gold Hook is in the vanilla piglin_loved item tag, along with the gold Aquaculture fishing rod and the gold fillet knife.
Several hook types, including the Obsidian, Glowstone, Quartz and Soul Sand hooks, have textures and names in the mod but no registration and no recipe. They cannot be obtained.
Tide hooks
Tide replaces the vanilla fishing rod by default. Tide hooks are installed in a rod's accessory slots at the Angling Table, which combines a hook, a line, a bobber and bait into the rod. See Tide Fishing for the rod system as a whole.
Each hook's effect depends on the environment where the rod is cast:
- Fishing Hook. The base hook. It fishes in open or enclosed water with no special effect of its own.
- Fiery Hook. Raises the water temperature around the bobber.
- Permafrost Hook. Lowers the water temperature around the bobber.
- Twilight Hook. Inverts the time-of-day preferences of fish, so fish that prefer day are caught at night and the reverse.
- Lavaproof Hook. Required for fishing in lava. The rod must also be lavaproof.
- Hook of the Depths. Required for fishing in the void. Void fishing happens above the configured void surface. The defaults are the bottom of the world minus 6 in the Overworld and the Nether, and the bottom plus 50 in The End.
The three temperature and time hooks change which fish are eligible. Each fish has its own temperature and time preferences, so the same hook may bring up different fish in different biomes. The exact effect on each fish is set by the mod's fish data and is not restated here.
Bite timing is shared by all Tide rods. The base bite time is a random 200–600 ticks, multiplied by a factor for the fishing medium: 1.0 in water, 1.6 in lava and 1.8 in the void. The Lure enchantment and bait then shorten the wait, with a floor of 10 ticks. Lava and void fishing therefore take longer on average, even with the correct hook.
