Apothecarist is a spellcasting mob added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It has 60 maximum health (30 ♥) and is a monster that throws splash potions at players, casts a small set of nature and poison spells, and also works as a merchant that sells potions, elixirs and scrolls and buys back ink. It is neutral until a player attacks it, and it drops Arcane Essence and a Nature scroll when it dies.

Spawning

The Apothecarist has no natural spawn entries. It is not added to any biome spawn list, so it does not appear in the horror biomes or anywhere else as an ordinary monster, and the pack's horror biome spawn weighting does not affect it. The mod's data adds no other spawn method. The Apothecarist Spawn Egg stacks to 64 and is listed in the creative tab.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The Apothecarist has 60 maximum health, 3 attack damage, no armor, a movement speed of 0.25 and a 24-block follow range. It wears a Plagued Coat on its chest, which never drops.

It is a neutral mob. A player who damages it gains anger equal to the damage dealt, rounded up. Anger is capped at 10 and falls by 1 every 20 seconds. The Apothecarist becomes hostile to a player once that player's anger reaches 2. It is also hostile to piglins: every 3 seconds, piglins within its follow range are set to attack it. It refuses to trade while it is aggressive.

Once hostile, it follows an attack goal at 1.25 speed. It waits 30 to 70 ticks between actions, and each action is one of two kinds:

  • Potion throw. When the target is within 10 blocks, there is a 50 percent chance per action that the Apothecarist throws a splash potion instead of casting. If the target is in line of sight, the throw is a harmful potion. Of these harmful throws, 45 percent are one of five status effects: Weakness, Blindness, Levitation, Slowness or Mining Fatigue, skipping any the target already has. The other 55 percent are Harm, or Heal if the target inverts healing and harm. Each potion lasts 200 ticks, and its amplifier is 0 to 2, with a higher chance of the top level against targets with more than 30 maximum health. When the target is out of line of sight, the Apothecarist throws a Strong Healing potion on itself instead.
  • Spell cast. Otherwise it casts a spell from one of its pools. The attack pool is Fang Strike (listed twice, so it is picked more often), Acid Spit, Poison Spray, Poison Arrow and Stomp. The defense pool is Root, and the support pool is Oakskin and Stomp. Spell quality is set between 25 and 60 percent.

It is immune to the five status effects above, so its own throws cannot affect it. It also takes no damage from its own Harm potions.

It also has a single-use Firefly Swarm cast at spell levels 4 to 6.

It gives 25 experience when it dies.

The loot table is as follows:

  • Arcane Essence, 0 to 8, with up to one extra per level of Looting.
  • One Scroll with a Nature spell, with a quality between 25 and 85 percent.
  • One to three rolls on the good ink loot table.

Trading

Right-clicking the Apothecarist opens a trading screen, provided it is not aggressive and has offers. Its first stock is three or four trades chosen at random from a pool of cheap goods for emeralds, including Magma Cream, Honey Bottle, Glowstone Dust, Redstone, Glow Ink Sac, Honeycomb, Fermented Spider Eye, Rabbit Foot and fungi, and some trades that buy food for emeralds. Other trades are then added at random:

  • A 25 percent chance each for ink buy-back trades at the uncommon, rare and epic ink rarities.
  • A 50 percent chance for an elixir buy trade.
  • One to three potion or elixir sell trades.
  • A Nature scroll trade with quality from 0 to 40 percent, with a 65 percent chance of a second one at 50 to 90 percent.
  • Netherward Tincture for 16 emeralds, with 8 uses per restock.
  • A Nature Rune for four of a random greater elixir (Evasion, Oakskin, Invisibility or Healing), with 1 use per restock.

Offers restock after at least 12,000 game ticks have passed since the last restock. Trades are also subject to a day-time check. For the mod's wider potion and elixir system, see Alchemist Cauldron and Elixirs.

Tips

Its potion throws are aimed at targets within 10 blocks, so breaking line of sight limits its harmful throws. Levitation and Slowness can separate a player from the rest of a group, and Root can hold a player in place. Trading is blocked while the Apothecarist is aggressive, so a player who attacks it should expect to wait for its anger to fall before opening the trade screen.
