The Priest is a neutral Holy-school support caster added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It has 60 health (30 hearts) and a melee attack of 3 damage. Priests heal and buff allies with Holy Spells and attack enemies with spells. They are found in villages rather than in the open world, and they sell Evoker Fort battle plans and a Villager Spell Book, which makes them a useful source for players who want those items. A priest does not attack a player on sight; it fights only after the player has angered it.

Spawning

Priests have no natural biome spawn entries. They are placed by the priest house village piece, which the mod adds to the vanilla plains and taiga village house pools at a default weight of 4 (the priestHouseWeight config option; 0 disables it). The pack's village pools also carry priest houses for the Repurposed Structures village types. Other village mods that add houses to the same pools compete with priest houses for slots, so in a heavily modded village set a priest house may be uncommon.

A priest that is placed by a structure looks for a meeting point (a village meeting point block) within 100 blocks and, if it finds one, uses it as its home position. Priests always spawn wearing a priest helmet and priest chestplate.

The mod also adds a Priest Spawn Egg. A priest created from an egg does not search for a meeting point, so it has no home position.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

Priests are neutral mobs. Their base stats are:

  • Health: 60
  • Attack damage: 3
  • Movement speed: 0.23
  • Follow range: 24 blocks
  • Experience dropped: 15

Anger. A player that damages a priest raises the priest's anger toward that player by the damage amount, rounded up. Anger is capped at 10 for each player. A player becomes a hostile target once its anger reaches 2. A hostile priest keeps that target for a random 20 to 39 seconds before the anger can end. Hitting a priest that is not yet hostile still raises its anger, so the first hit does not always start a fight.

Trading. Right-clicking a priest opens its trade screen if the priest is not aggressive and has offers. If the priest is aggressive or has no offers, the interaction makes it play an unhappy sound. The trades are listed in the table below.

Combat. A hostile priest casts spells in combat. Its main attacks are Wisp and Guiding Bolt, it also uses Gust, and it casts Heal on itself. It drinks potions when it needs them. Its spell quality is set to a middle range (0.3 to 0.5), so its casts are not at full strength.

Support. A priest heals and buffs allies. It casts Blessing of Life, Healing Circle and Fortify. It supports village allies and players whose health is below 80 percent of their maximum, and it does not support any creature it is angry at.

Village defence. Priests join village defence. A priest will take a player as its target when that player is a threat to the nearby villagers.

Nearby enemies. Every 60 ticks, a priest looks for hostile mobs within its follow range (24 blocks). Any such mob that has no target is given the priest as its target. Creepers, summoned magic creatures and tamed animals are excluded. A priest therefore draws a nearby group of hostile mobs toward itself, so a fight near a priest can grow larger than expected.

Night and daytime. A priest with a home position walks back to it at night. During the day it roams and patrols near its village.

Trading

The priest offers four trades, shown in the table below. Two of them are potion trades that buy or sell healing potions for emeralds. The Evoker Fort battle plans are a furled map that marks the Evoker Fort. The priest also sells a Villager Spell Book in exchange for a Translated Archevoker Logbook. The priest restocks its offers on a daily cycle.

Drops

Priests drop Arcane Essence, a Holy-school scroll, and items from the mod's ink loot table. The table below lists the exact amounts.

  • Arcane Essence is dropped in amounts from 0 to 8, and each level of Looting adds up to one more.
  • The scroll is randomized to a Holy-school spell with a quality between 0.25 and 0.85.
  • The ink loot table is rolled one to three times.

The priest's helmet and chestplate are set to a 0 percent drop chance, so the armor the priest wears does not drop when it is killed.

Tips

  • A priest that has been angered draws nearby hostile mobs toward itself. Fight it in an open area where you can see what is close to it.
  • Check whether a priest is aggressive before you open its trade screen. An aggressive priest will not trade.
  • The priest's Evoker Fort battle plans are a trade offer, so they can be bought from the priest rather than searched for.
