The Catacombs Zombie is a hostile mob added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It appears only inside the Catacombs structure, where it is one of the monsters that guard the underground halls. It is a modified vanilla zombie: it keeps the zombie's stats and behaviour, but it has a wider hitbox, a chance of one permanent status effect, and armour that it wears from creation. It is worth attention because its extra width and its buffs make it stronger than the zombies a player meets on the surface.

Spawning

The Catacombs Zombie has no entries in any biome spawn list, so it does not appear naturally in the open world. It spawns through the Catacombs structure. The structure's monster spawn override lists three entries: the Catacombs Zombie with weight 10, a skeleton with weight 5, and a Necromancer with weight 2. Each entry spawns as a group of exactly one. The override applies inside the bounding box of each piece of the structure, so every corridor, room and stairway of a catacomb can hold its own zombies. The mob can also be created with the /summon command.

The Catacombs structure is placed underground, with its starting height between Y -40 and Y 20. It generates in the hills, taiga and jungle biome groups. Fear Nightfall places horror structures, including the catacombs, about 30% closer together than the stock pack does, and gives them 6 times the weight when they share a structure set with other structures. Catacombs, and the zombies inside them, are therefore more common in Fear Nightfall worlds than in the unmodified mod.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

The Catacombs Zombie extends the vanilla zombie class, so it uses the zombie's movement, targeting and melee attacks. It has no spells or special attacks of its own. Its attributes match the vanilla zombie:

  • Health: 20 (10 hearts)
  • Attack damage: 3
  • Armour: 2
  • Movement speed: 0.23
  • Follow range: 35 blocks

Its hitbox is 1.5 blocks wide and 0.95 blocks tall, while a vanilla zombie is 0.6 blocks wide and 1.95 blocks tall. Because it is wider than one block, it cannot pass through a one-block-wide opening. It burns in direct sunlight, as vanilla zombies do, and it can break wooden doors on Hard difficulty and call reinforcements, which are also inherited from the zombie class.

Random status effects

When a Catacombs Zombie is created, it has a 20% chance of receiving one permanent status effect, chosen with equal weight from four options. The effects last indefinitely.

Effect Level
Invisibility I
Speed II
Resistance II
Strength I

The remaining 80% of Catacombs Zombies have no status effect.

Armour

Each Catacombs Zombie rolls its armour when it is created. Each of the four armour slots (boots, leggings, chestplate and helmet) has a 40% chance of holding a piece, and the other 60% are empty. Each mob also rolls one tier value that sets the material for its whole set:

A small random offset is applied to each slot, so the pieces of one set can differ in tier. In addition, 1% of Catacombs Zombies wear a cyan banner on the head in place of a helmet.

Drops

The mod gives the Catacombs Zombie no loot table of its own. It drops what a vanilla zombie drops, such as rotten flesh, and it grants 5 experience when killed. The armour it wears never drops, because the drop chance for every armour slot is set to 0. The helmet banner, if present, also does not drop. The generated table below lists the drops.

No item drops.

Tips

  • Fight the Catacombs Zombie in a corridor or a room with a one-block-wide doorway. A zombie that is 1.5 blocks wide cannot pass through the gap, so it has to be fought in the open or at a wider entrance.
  • Check the mob before engaging. A Speed II zombie closes distance faster, and a Strength I zombie hits harder. A Resistance II zombie takes less damage from every source, so use a stronger weapon or ranged attacks against it.
  • Armour reduces the damage the zombie takes. Iron pieces protect more than chainmail, and chainmail protects more than leather, so a zombie in iron armour takes the least damage from each hit.
  • Because the armour never drops, do not plan on collecting it from these mobs. Use the armour and other gear found in the structure's chests instead.
  • Catacombs Zombies spawn inside every piece of the structure, not only at the entrance, so expect them in side rooms and along stairways as well as in the main corridors.
