The Cryomancer is a neutral spellcasting merchant added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It is an ice-school caster that stands 1.8 blocks tall and has 60 health. It sells ice-school Scrolls, ink and a few other items, and it turns hostile when a player attacks it. It is also a monster-category caster, so once it is angry it casts ice spells at range and summons polar bears to fight for it.

Cryomancers are placed by players, using the Cryomancer Spawn Egg or the /summon command.

Spawning

A Cryomancer has no natural spawn entries in any biome, and no structure in the pack places one. The mod's source contains no code that spawns it either. In practice a Cryomancer appears only when a player creates one, with the Cryomancer Spawn Egg (which is in the mod's creative tab) or the /summon command.

Does not spawn naturally in any biome (see Obtaining/Spawning text).

Behavior

A Cryomancer is a NeutralWizard, so it does not attack players by default. It is a merchant that opens its trade screen when a player right-clicks it, as long as it is not angry and has stock. When it spawns, it wears a Cryomancer Helmet and a Cryomancer Chestplate. Those two pieces are set not to drop when it dies.

Anger and hostility

Anger is tracked per player. Each hit a player lands adds anger equal to the damage rounded up, capped at 10. Once a player's anger reaches 2, the Cryomancer targets that player and stays hostile for the persistent anger timer, which lasts 20 to 39 seconds. A single hit of more than 1 damage is enough, and two hits of 1 damage also reach the threshold. Anger drops by 1 for every 20 seconds without a new hit. Players in creative mode never anger it. A Cryomancer cannot be frozen.

While it is angry, it does not offer trades.

Combat

  • Movement: The Cryomancer moves at speed 0.25 and follows targets from up to 24 blocks away. Its melee attack deals 3 damage with no knockback.
  • Attack spells: Its attack pool holds Icicle three times and Cone of Cold once. Icicle is therefore the spell players will meet most often.
  • Defence: It uses Counterspell from its defence pool.
  • Movement spell: It uses Frost Step to reposition itself.
  • Ice Block: It uses Ice Block in a spell barrage, which repeats the cast on a timer of 100 to 250 ticks.
  • Polar bears: It summons a Polar Bear as a single-use spell. The summon is cast once per fight and can be cast again after a delay of 80 to 400 ticks.
  • Potions: It can drink potions.
  • Patrol: When it is not fighting, it patrols near its position.

Spell damage numbers are not listed here, because each spell defines its own and they were not verified for this page.

Drops

A Cryomancer drops the following items on death:

  • 0 to 8 Arcane Essence, with 0 to 1 extra per level of Looting.
  • 1 scroll whose spell is always from the ice school, with a quality between 0.25 and 0.85.
  • 1 to 3 rolls on the mod's good-ink loot table, which can drop ink.

Its equipment does not drop, so the Cryomancer Helmet and Cryomancer Chestplate must be crafted if the player wants them. The helmet is a shapeless recipe from a wizard base helmet, an Ice Rune and Arcane Essence. The other armor pieces have crafting and smithing recipes.

Trades

The Cryomancer has a fixed set of offers and does not add random filler trades. Its offers include random ice-school scrolls, three kinds of ink that each appear with a 25% chance, a furled map to either the Impaled Icebreaker or the Ice Spider Den, a music disc for Fire Ale and an Ice Rune for Icy Fang. Each offer can be used once before the Cryomancer restocks.

Tips

  • Do not hit a Cryomancer unless you are ready to fight it. A single hit can make it hostile, and a hostile Cryomancer will not sell anything until its anger wears off.
  • Plan the armor. The helmet and chestplate do not drop, so crafting them is the only reliable way to get them.
  • The map offer leads to an Impaled Icebreaker or an Ice Spider Den. Both are cold-biome structures and the map is the cheapest way to find one.
  • Ice-school scrolls from trades are the easiest way to add ice spells to a spellbook.
