The Citadel is a walled fortress structure added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. It generates in the Nether, in the nether biomes listed under Generation, and holds a library of books and spell scrolls, a locked vault and the cursed armor stands and Citadel Keepers that guard it. Players come to it for the magic loot and for the spellbook materials that the vault and bookshelves provide.

Generation

The Citadel is a jigsaw structure that generates in the Nether. Its placement uses the random_spread method with a spacing of 192 chunks and a separation of 153 chunks. These are the in-game values after the pack's Sparse Structures scaling. The mod's own default spacing is about 100 chunks, so the Citadel is considerably rarer in Fear Nightfall. A 26 km² sample of the Nether found none, so expect to travel a long way to find one.

The structure starts at a fixed height of Y 40. Its pieces are fitted to the terrain with the beard_box terrain adaptation, and the jigsaw can extend up to 116 blocks from its starting point. It is allowed in these biomes: Crimson Forest, Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Warped Forest, Black Ice Glaciers, Crystalline Chasm, Erupting Inferno, Undergrowth, Visceral Heap, Withered Abyss, Mycotoxic Undergrowth, Blackstone Basin, Glistering Meadow and Infernal Holt.

From outside, the Citadel is a walled compound with a tall entrance tower and a rampart around its outer edge. The rampart is decorated with braziers, armor piles, barrels and small chests.

Layout

The Citadel is built from a set of connected template pieces:

  • Entrance tower: a separate tower piece that forms the gateway into the compound.
  • Main hall: the central body of the fortress. Its bookshelves are randomized by a processor list, so the shelves hold different mixes of books and scrolls.
  • Rampart: the outer walls, built from straight, corner and all-sides pieces, with decorations such as armor piles, barrels, braziers, trophies and chests.
  • Armor stand hall: cursed armor stands placed in four poses (default, heroic, kneeling and stoic). Each pose has three weapon variants: a flamberge, a heavy weapon and a light weapon.
  • Vault: a room with a Cinderous Vault block, which is opened with a Decrepit Key. Its loot is listed below.

Inhabitants

The Citadel places two kinds of mob:

  • Citadel Keeper (Ancient Knight): a hostile spellcasting warrior with 60 health, 10 attack damage and 0.8 knockback resistance. It is immune to fire and has a follow range of 25 blocks. Its melee uses five attacks: a double slash, an upward slash, two horizontal slashes, a stab and a lunge. It targets players and most other mobs, except the types in the infernal allies tag. A Keeper carries a Keeper Flamberge. A restored Keeper carries a Legionnaire Flamberge and uses a different texture. A Keeper summoned by the Fire Boss while that boss is in soul mode is restored.
  • Cursed Armor Stand (Cursed Armor Stand): a stand with 60 health and 3 attack damage. A stand starts frozen in its pose. Interacting with a frozen stand plays a jiggle and an armor sound. The third interaction makes the stand attack the player. See Cursed Armor Stand for its full behaviour.

Loot

The Citadel's loot comes from its bookshelves, its chests, its Keepers and its vault. Bookshelves give mostly paper and books, with a 23% chance of an Ancient Knowledge Fragment per shelf and a 1% chance of a Ruined Book. The generic magic treasure chests always contain Arcane Essence and always contain a scroll. The Keeper drops Cinder Essence when it is killed by a player, and it has a chance of Netherite Scrap that rises with the Looting enchantment. The vault table adds Arcane Essence (5 to 16 per roll), Ancient Knowledge Fragments and a Pyrium Ingot.

Furled map

The Citadel can be located with a Citadel furled map. It is crafted in a 3 by 3 grid with paper at the corners and the centre, Ancient Knowledge Fragments at the top and bottom middle, and Cinder Essence at the left and right middle. The map is listed under Furled Maps.

Tips

Craft a Citadel map before you go, so you can find the structure without searching the Nether blindly. The Keepers cast spells as well as using melee, so bring a ranged option and keep your distance. Approach the armor stands one at a time. A stand becomes hostile only after the third interaction, so you can open a stand and step back to deal with it alone. The Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks weapons page lists the mod's weapons, including the flamberges.
