Scrolls are single-use magic items added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Each scroll holds one spell at a set level and rarity, and casting it uses up one scroll. Scrolls can be cast directly, transferred into a spell book, or merged to raise a spell's level. They are common loot in the pack's magic structures.

Obtaining

Scrolls come from four sources: chest loot, mob drops, the wandering trader and crafting at the Scroll Forge.

Loot and drops

Scrolls appear in chests in several structures. Most of these are magic structures from this mod, such as Evoker Fort, Catacombs and Citadel, and they are rolled in every chest of the listed tables. Structures from other mods also contain scrolls. These include the desert temple from Better Desert Temples, the witch villa from Nova Structures and the worship chests of Better Fortresses. The per-chest chance and average count for each loot table are listed in the table below.

Scrolls are also dropped by the spellcasting mobs Pyromancer, Cryomancer, Archevoker, Priest and Apothecarist. A Necromancer drops them with a 25% chance, and only when it is killed by a player.

Fear Nightfall adds Iron's Spells loot to the chests that the pack maps to vanilla chest types. This means that scrolls turn up in more chests across the modded structures than the base mod alone would place them.

Trading

Scrolls are sold by the Wandering Trader. The common trade pool offers three random scroll trades, and the rare pool adds two scroll pouch trades. The trades are enabled by the additionalWanderingTraderTrades config option, which is on by default.

Crafting

The Scroll Forge crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. Each recipe produces a scroll for one spell, and the Scroll Forge's spell selection screen lets the player choose which spell the result holds. The crafting recipe for each scroll is shown in the table below.

No crafting recipe.

Usage

Right-clicking a scroll casts the spell it holds at the level printed on it. Casting from a scroll follows the rules for Spellcasting, including the spell's cast time and cooldown. The item tooltip shows the spell's details under the heading "When in Spell Book:".

Consumption

Each completed cast uses up one scroll, unless the player is in creative mode. Instant and long-cast spells consume the scroll when the cast completes. Continuous spells consume the scroll when the cast ends or is cancelled. Tossing a continuous-cast scroll while it is casting also removes one scroll from the stack.

Transferring into a spell book

A scroll can be placed in the Inscription Table to add its spell to a spell book. A scroll that is too rare for the target book is refused, and the game shows "This scroll is too rare for this spell book."

Merging with ink

A scroll can be raised to the next level of its spell by placing it in the Arcane Anvil together with ink. The ink must match the rarity of the spell's next level, and the result is a single scroll one level higher. Merging is controlled by the scrollMerging config option, which is on by default. Ink rarities are listed in Scroll Forge and Inks.

Recycling in the Alchemist Cauldron

A scroll placed in the Alchemist Cauldron with 250 mB of water is recycled into the ink that matches its spell's rarity. The recycle chance is set by the scrollRecycleChance option, which defaults to 0.5. A successful recycle uses up the water and adds 250 mB of ink to the cauldron. A failed recycle still destroys the scroll and leaves the water in the cauldron.

Tips

Carry spare scrolls of a spell into a fight, because each scroll allows only one cast. Scrolls that are too rare for a spell book can still be cast directly, so keep them for combat rather than transferring them.
