The Lore Books and Manuscripts are a group of readable books and research items added by Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. The group includes the Ruined Book, the Eldritch Manuscript used to learn Eldritch Spells, the Ancient Knowledge Fragment that the manuscript is crafted from, the two versions of the Archevoker's Logbook, the Chronicle, the Chained and Unchained Books, and the Book Stack decoration block. Most of them open a book screen when used, and most can also be placed on a lectern and are accepted by a bookshelf.
Their text is the mod's main way of telling its story: a band of Archevokers establishing a camp, a cellar beneath a chapel that nobody remembers, and a battlefield where souls lost their free will. Several of the books are found in dark, dangerous places such as sculk-infested ancient cities and the Citadel.
Obtaining
Most of the group is found in structure chests or crafted. The Eldritch Manuscript is the only item here that is needed to learn spells, and the loot data built for this page lists no chest or mob source for it, so crafting is its only source.
Crafting
The Eldritch Manuscript is crafted from 8 Ancient Knowledge Fragments and an Echo Shard. The Chronicle needs a Book, a Gold Ingot and an Arcane Ingot. Three Books craft one Book Stack. The Ruined Book, Chained Book, Unchained Book and Archevoker's Logbook have no crafting recipe in the pack data. The Ruined Book is an ingredient in other recipes, described under Usage below.
Loot and drops
Ruined Books turn up in ancient city and mansion chests. The chance per chest is 8.3% in the ancient city table, 11.0% in the illager mansion ancient city raid table used by woodland mansions, and 5.7% in an additional ancient city table added by the mod. Citadel bookshelves carry a Ruined Book at 1.3% per chest.
Ancient Knowledge Fragments are the most common of the group. They appear in many village and structure library chests at roughly 80 to 85 percent per chest, averaging about two per chest. Witch houses, illager hideouts, witch villas, and village libraries all carry them.
Chained Books are found only in Citadel bookshelves, at 29.7% per chest with an average of 1.1 per chest. Archevoker's Logbooks, the Chronicle, the Unchained Book and the Book Stack are not in the chest data.
Fear Nightfall maps the chests of structure mods onto vanilla chests, and loot from Iron's Spells reaches those mapped chests. These books therefore also appear in the taverns, crypts and other structures that the pack adds from other mods, not only in the mod's own structures.

Trading
A wandering trader's rare trade pool includes an Ancient Knowledge Fragment for 64 emeralds, less 1 to 8 emeralds, plus 1 to 3 Echo Shards. The offer has 8 uses. The extra wandering trader trades are controlled by the additionalWanderingTraderTrades setting, which is on by default.

Usage
Eldritch Manuscript
The Eldritch Manuscript is an Epic, stackable item (64). Holding one in a hand and using it opens the Eldritch research screen for that hand. To learn a spell, press and hold the mouse button on an unlearned spell node until the hold completes, which takes about 16 ticks (under a second). Each spell learned consumes one manuscript, unless the player is in creative mode. Spells that are already learned cannot be learned again, and the screen will not start a learn unless a manuscript is in the active hand.
The screen's tooltip reads "Hold to Learn (1 Manuscript)" while a manuscript is held. Eldritch spells are covered on Eldritch Spells.
Ruined Book
The Ruined Book is an Epic, stackable item (64) that is found in sculk-infested ancient cities. Reading it shows ten pages. Without the Planar Sight effect, every page is written in obfuscated glyphs, so the text cannot be read. With Planar Sight active, the first page becomes legible and the rest read as the word "Darkness". The book is an ingredient in four recipes, which make the Vampiric Spell Book, the Ancient Codex, the Frostbranded Book and the Dragonskin Spell Book.
Archevoker's Logbook
The Archevoker's Logbook comes in two versions. The untranslated version is written in the illager font and its tooltip reads "untranslated" in red. The translated version uses the normal font and its tooltip is yellow. Both open as a written book with four entries, dated day 2, day 14, day 31 and day 73.
The journal describes an Archevoker camp built from logs and stone, supplied from Fort Greater, with a nearby village to be taken by siege. Later entries record the writer's sense that the magic has twisted their senses, that a cellar beneath a chapel has been forgotten by everyone else, and that the research may force them to abandon the site.
Chronicle
The Chronicle is an Epic, non-stackable book with three chapters: The Loyal Souls, The Faithful Souls and The Lost Souls. Each chapter lists names. The names come from a supporter list that the mod loads at runtime, so the content of the pages can change. The list is sorted by pledge tier, with the highest tiers placed first in each chapter, and the pages are rebuilt about once a day.
Chained Book and Unchained Book
The Chained Book is a plain, stackable book with no special behaviour. It is found in Citadel bookshelves and is accepted by lecterns and bookshelves.
The Unchained Book is a non-stackable, Cinderous-rarity book. Its two pages, written in the alternate font, describe a battlefield where every soul lost its free will to a demigod. It is accepted by lecterns and bookshelves.
Ancient Knowledge Fragment
The Ancient Knowledge Fragment is an Uncommon, stackable (64) material. It is the main ingredient of the Eldritch Manuscript, and the recipes that use it are listed in the table below.

Book Stack
The Book Stack is a decorative block with a hardness of 0.2 that can be broken with any tool. It sits in one of four facing directions (north, south, east or west) and needs a solid block directly below it to stay in place.
